Hello Guys,

I'm throwing this question to you because it's very important. Every time I ask, "how is Nairaland?" I'm told that it is fine. If I ask what are the challenges I'm told there are none.

So I need to talk to you guys directly about what you think is going on and what you want us to do. I have not had the confidence to make major changes on Nairaland. I have a little confidence now because of AI.

What are your complaints, your challenges, your issues. What are the things that can drive people away and need to be nipped?

Speak your mind, but don't be rude. Thanks.
Please kindly be very strict and drastic about the tribalists making this place horrible. This is the main reason some users want to deactivate.
You come online, read a topic and when you want to comment on it, tribalistic comments immediately makes you think otherwise

Secondly your time structures should reflect the actual period of day e.g. 07 is am and 7 or 19 is pm. Seeing 07 in the evening on the forum is not right. Please note this.

Example @ below,edited @5:36 pm
"15 April 2025 at 05:36 PM"

05:36 is actually a.m

Otherwise, kindly leave Nairaland the way it is,we do not need any adjustments. Thanks a lot.

Three simple suggestions:
-handle bolts and fake accounts just like ‘X’ did so we can know our true strength
-introduce the dislike button
-take off that Muslim confirmation stuff for Muslim section.

Please I don't know if anyone has mentioned it before me:
Top on my list is to make the list of those who who like another person's list to be visible to others with a click.
Let us begin to see the hypocrisy of some people here.
We are at a crossroads in Nigeria and we have to take steps to separate critical thinking versus band wagon thinking.
Also, some men and women who insults one another are secretly still fans of each other.
Let all this data be available by way of seeing and clicking the 'like' button.

And I am surprised to see that I can't find videos here except it is a link of YouTube. Please is there an unwritten rule not to post normal videos?

Thank you.

1.) Profit sharing like it's on X, Facebook, etc. You are on X, find way to incorporate that ads profit sharing into Nairaland and watch Nairalanders bring more adverts to the site so that they can make money too and also to encourage more quality content creators.

This is very important, the world is changing, everybody wants to earn some income from everything they do; even if they are doing the wrong thing they wanna earn from it grin

Affiliate program or ad profit sharing based on a thread's views and engagement or something like that.

You can make this feature available to old accounts only or accounts that have lasted 3 years above, this will also encourage people to stay longer on Nairaland and not try to deactivate and will also make members strive to become relevant with quality threads and contributions.

2.) Sack bias mods, don't be scared to fire them, nobody is irreplaceable on earth, when people stay too long in a job they become too bossy and arrogant, if some of your arrogant, bias, tribalist mods destroying your site are so good and sure of their capability, let them go and create their own forum and nurture it to success like Nl, fire them asap so the forum will breath some fresh air.

3.) The reason people are usually shy or ashamed to associate their real personality with Nl the way they do in other social sites is due to the toxicity on Nairaland.

Male monikers always attacking and bashing Nigerian women.

APC ruling party agents using Nland as their propaganda ground with the backing of some of your tribalist, bias mods (I don't know if you self follow for the agenda cool )

Anti Igbo mods and members turning Nland to an anti Igbo forum all because of politics, it wasn't like this until the emergence of APC.

They have turned people like us to tribalist too in an effort to fight back and defend our Igbo race, but it's absurd, try and control it. I know it isn't easy but try and make some sincere efforts.

3.) Add dislike button

4.) If possible make it possible for members to delete their accounts completely, other foreign forums allow that, emulate them Nairaland is not a kidnappers or terrorist den or evil forest or cult group where going back or saying I no do again is forbidden cheesy

5.) Put a report moderator button for members to report obnoxious, tribalist and overbearing mods to you the site owner.

Do these things and with time there will be positive response and influx of quality traffic.

Personally, I feel a portrait of His Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) should be included on the front page.

Justification for such is that, never a time in history has the country had a leader who supports and welcomes social media criticism. Also, being same time the best we had since independence, it will be a great honor to have his portrait on the front page.

1- Some of your mods are banning without telling you the rules broken or just because you spoke against their opinion
2- Some mods are good at pushing false news to front page just because they don't like certain politicians, even after pressing rules 8 the news will not be taking down
3- some monikers don't have anything to do here , rather than trolling and calling a nairalander with different names and your mods are not doing anything about it
Mention the mod if you get mind

Why would one have to take an oath before commenting on a Muslim thread ? That's very wrong because everyone can comment on Christian threads without being asked to take oath. Some of your mods needs serious caution especially Myndd 44. That dude is too tribalistic to be a mod a forum like nairaland

It's like he is a Nazi bot . How can you keep the same mod since 2006 ? And not pay them ? That's why justwise has turned into a sadist. 20 years of unpaid nairaland work has turned him to a sadist lol. Come on bro this shit you are doing here where you are eating all the money alone and have all these people working for free is wickedness. Took me 4 months of being a mod to realize what the heck am I doing here ? All these hassles for free ? Dealing with unruly demons 24 7 for free. You gotta pay your mods a token so they don't turn to sadists like justwise

2- block button so I can block virulent tribalists

3 - dislike button so idiots can have their idiotic opinions quantified by dislikes

Nairaland is no longer Entertaining again.

Nairaland is now BORING

Sometimes I don't even remember coming here anymore. I'm more on Twitter since these past few months.

Every front page threads is now 90% threads from Politics. Everyday Politics...Every night Politics. Why?

Even TV stations don't show NEWS all the time.

They create a balance to give everyone a variety because they understand that viewers like different things.

We have several topics on Nairaland.
We have
-Entertainment
-Career
-Family
-Health
-Travel
-Food
-Sports
-Job Vacancies
-Romance
-Sexuality
-NYSC
-Diaries
-Technology

But everyday, what we see on Front page is Wike this...Wike that....

I don't see why you created close to 40 other topics but only choose to bring threads 90% of Politics to Front page only.

It doesn't make sense.

If u have worked in a Television station before both home and abroad, you will understand what I'm saying.

Silverbird TV will never show Politics or News from morning till night because they know they will loose their viewership.

They give u a blend of everything even a taste of sexuality by bringing half naked girls to grace ur screens inform of Silverbird MBGN.

Ben Murray Bruce is a smart business man

Nairaland is now so boring.

Nairaland now is not different from NTA as we speak.

I only come here. Promote my market and run out fast to Twitter or Facebook.

Seun, you really need more admins to crack down on racist and ethnic abuse.

It's getting so bad and the whole place is getting pretty toxic.

It's very very difficult to get good conversations going with all the horrible abusive language being exchanged.

So many lives have been positively impacted by Nairaland but I'm afraid that the forum will not grow except something is done. Suspensions and outright bans for offenders and repeat offenders

For me, I would the we have educational topics pushed more to front page. Remember how one of your previous mods who always would push any topic that has snakes to front page

For educational topics, just go thru your archive, and search for topics on nature, geography, automobile, history, non controversial political topics and push to them to front page

Also a dislike button would be fantastic

Increase the amount of pictures that can be posted per page

I love puting up educational post but I have been discouraged from doing it lately

Twitter is a social app. Nairaland is a membership(forum). There is difference between the two!
Ziggy02:
Most of the time people tend to be afraid of change,, hence perhaps the reason nairaland still uses the same interface and layout

Don't be afraid of the unknown,, you should upgrade the user interface, let it be responsive and navigate able, you already have the community all you need do is make it look more lively and graphics friendly

It won't reduce your community if you decide to make it work like the likes of twitter. You are doing just fine but you are also loosing intelligent people who used to love this space

This space is littered with young minds who doesn't understand that level of intellectuals that used to school each other here,, upgrade and let it graphically interactive

The news don't get here onetime

The mods ain't active enough, they are a bit passive.

We need more emojis

Allow people that don't want to stay the privilege to deactivate their account

You tried NL app some yrs back , it didn't work out. You can re introduced it

Anti spam bot can be crazy at times....reduce its sensitivity

And finally, remove THE OATH ON THE ISLAM FOR MUSLIM section

No one is more Nigerian than the other
No one is more Nairalander than the other

So,

No section should have more privilege than the other

No religion should be given a preferential treatment

You have to introduce the proximity stuff

People should see who is closer to them: like when someone comments, people would see 4km away, 1 km away, very near ( 1-900m) and stuff like that.

Abusive language and cursing must be stop,an intelligent and mature person should be able to make his or her opinion known without cursing or using abusive language.

Immoral picture or video like pornography must continue be censored.

Restrictions of comments on religious issues should be removed, like asking whether I'm a Muslim before commenting. Remove THE OATH ON THE ISLAM FOR MUSLIM section

Hmmm nice one...Let's me also base my response on ai....

Nairaland.com is one of Nigeria’s oldest and most visited online forums, launched in 2005 by Seun Osewa. It serves as a hub for discussions on a wide range of topics including politics, technology, education, entertainment, and lifestyle. While it still maintains a loyal user base and huge traffic, the website has struggled to keep up with modern web and community standards. Below is a detailed analysis and suggestions for improvement:

---

Site Analysis

1. Design & User Interface (UI)

Outdated Design: The design is very basic, text-heavy, and lacks modern UI elements.

No Visual Appeal: There are very few images or graphics. It relies heavily on plain hyperlinks and basic formatting.

Not Mobile-Friendly: Though there's a mobile version, it's not fully responsive and doesn’t use progressive web design.

2. User Experience (UX)

Thread Navigation: Threads are difficult to navigate, especially when pages stretch to hundreds of comments.

Search Functionality: Limited and inaccurate. Users often rely on Google to find Nairaland threads.

No Personalization: There's no personalized feed, user recommendations, or tagging system.

3. Technology & Features

Old Stack: It likely runs on an outdated tech stack. There’s no evidence of modern frameworks or integrations.

No Notifications: Users don’t get real-time notifications for replies or mentions.

No Multimedia Integration: Embedding videos, GIFs, or even images is clunky or discouraged.

4. Community & Moderation

Overcentralized Moderation: Only a few moderators control a large number of topics, leading to slow responses to reports.

Toxicity & Spam: Trolls and off-topic posts often overwhelm meaningful discussions.

5. Monetization & Business Model

Google Ads Reliance: Heavy reliance on AdSense. No premium features or donation options.

No In-House Ad System: Missed opportunity for local businesses to advertise directly.

---

Recommendations to Uplift Nairaland

1. Redesign the Platform

Adopt a modern, responsive UI similar to Reddit or Quora.

Use modern design systems (Material Design, TailwindCSS).

Include dark mode, visual profiles, avatars, and emojis.

2. Enhance the User Experience

Implement thread collapsing/expanding, thread bookmarking, and filtered search options.

Add real-time notifications and better reply systems (like mentions, quotes, nested replies).

Introduce a mobile app with push notifications and a smooth interface.

3. Upgrade Technology

Migrate to a modern tech stack (e.g., React/Vue frontend, Node.js/Django backend).

Optimize for speed, SEO, and security.

Integrate APIs for multimedia (YouTube, Instagram) and cloud storage for images.

4. Strengthen the Community

Empower user-moderation tools (upvotes/downvotes, flagging, badges).

Create interest groups or “Sub-forums” like Reddit’s subreddits.

Host AMA (Ask Me Anything) sessions with Nigerian thought leaders to drive engagement.

5. Diversify Monetization

Offer premium accounts with ad-free experiences and additional features.

Launch Nairaland Marketplace with escrow integration for secure transactions.

Provide sponsored post options and an in-house local ad manager.

6. Incorporate Content Innovation

Launch Nairaland Digest (weekly newsletter of hot topics).

Add a blog section for thought pieces and editorials.

Include video podcast integration or a Nairaland TV section for community-driven content.

7. Promote Safety and Inclusiveness

Enforce anti-harassment and fake news policies.

Set up an AI-powered spam filter.

Create inclusive sub-forums for minorities and marginalized voices.

---

Conclusion

Nairaland has the traffic, audience trust, and brand recognition needed to be Nigeria’s own version of Reddit or Quora. However, it requires a bold relaunch, adopting modern practices in design, technology, and community building to remain relevant. The platform can evolve from being “just a forum” into a dynamic, user-driven digital ecosystem.

A visual mockup or roadmap plan for revamping the site attached.

---
1. Visual Mockup Explanation (Based on the attached image)

Here’s what’s been improved in the modern Nairaland homepage mockup:

Header Section

Clean Navigation Bar: Tabs like Trending, Recent, New, and Topics.

Sign Up/Login Buttons: Prominent in the top-right for easy access.

Content Layout

Trending Section (Left):

Highlights hot discussions.

Each post includes topic tags (e.g., Politics), time of post, author, and comment count.

Modern typography and spacing make it easier to scan.

Most interacted threads with clear numbers.

Clean alignment for better readability.

Footer Topic Grid

Clickable Topics: Users can explore by interest like Business, Education, Technology, Autos, Travel, etc.

Minimalist Layout: White and grey tones to reduce visual noise.

1. An interactive app is long overdue.

2. Bigotry is way overboard here. Unfortunately, it drives the most traffic as well. It's a tough call choosing between profit and mortality.

3. I know you sell adverts, but you need to sell membership as well. Nairaland needs more money for innovation. Leverage the crowd.

4. I have consistently busted people who operate multiple accounts here but they go unhindered. You need intentional moderators.

5. When last did you do/sponsor a free for all? I remember coming 4th in an essay debate years back but I'm not sure such things exist anymore. Let there be a Nairaland signature event every year.

6. One does not need to see/continuously see things that do not appeal to them. Algorithm is a big call so we can start with things like Block, Dislike, or Community Notes.
