A little back story.

Due to some ugly circumstances, i dropped out of school in 2019 and I've been at home since then, periodically picking up one or two low paying jobs. 2 years ago, I decided to learning a tech skill. I taught myself C++ programming language and I'm currently teaching myself mathematics aggressively, studying for min of 8 hours daily.

For the past two years, I've mostly always been in my room, I can be in our house for more than two weeks, without stepping a foot out of our door due to how engrossed in studying I always am. My goal is to learn C++, DSA , And Math to an undergraduate level then use my skills to apply for scholarships to study abroad, and probably work in a hedge fund company as a quantitative trader in the future. For those who know what leetcode is, i can currently solve most leetcode (hard) problems in less than 40 minutes.

Now, I'll be 24 in August, and my dad is worried that I'm wasting my life away because I've refused to pickup any real job or learn a trade, his worried that I'm already getting old, always reminding me that people my age are already getting married. Now he wants me to leave his house to go look for my own place to stay, and has offered me 7 million naira to go start life else where.

Now I plan to move out of Lagos to PH or Akwa Ibom, then use part of the money to start up a computer business center, where I'll be doing typing, printing, lamination, jamb registration, GCE/WAEC registrations, etc. One of the reasons I chose this is because I've worked in a place like this before and I have experience in how to run such a place. Another reason is that, this business would give me time to also study and sharpen my Math/Programming skills. I plan to rent a shop that is big enough so that I can also be sleeping/living there.

Now I seriously need advicing because this is such a turning point in my life and the next few years is going to make or break me because there is no room for any disastrous bad decision cry
stay in Lagos, instead start a tech based startup, register your company and provide tangible value.

I swear I didn't know you already had the idea. Now that you know about YouTube you can even make more than 200 a month. Some people in your niche are making thousands you are talking about this little money.

Like I said better focus on this one and forget this rubbish business center you want to do. I can send you a YouTube link on how to get started on any kind of niche. It's a 24Hrs course and it's amazing. If you are interested I will drop the link..best is to download the course and watch cos it's broken into segments. I work more than 10hrs on faceless everyday and I love what I do too..

Edited: The mathematics niche isn't a good niche at all on YouTube as people aren't really interested in it. You can also check it out yourself. But you can still make researches and do other things like true crime, detective stories etc or other things you love.

Even Mr Beast is a mathematician but had to use compromise and make money otherways. After you make so much from your Faceless then you can now follow your maths dreams.
Can you share the link, please? I think it is time to monetize my skills.

In everything you do, please make that man happy ooo

Some of us never had this opportunity to see who go give us this sort of encouragement but please start out life in a not too bespoke environment, study your area well and make use of your resources

You will be fine

First thing I think you should do is have a heart to heart with your Dad.
1. Try to explain what your plan is to him. Give him all the details.
2. Let him know what you are currently doing to bring your plans to fruition.
3. Then ask him for the help you need to achieve your plan.

What you can add to your plan.
1. Look for software development degrees in Europe.
2. Take a look at "42".
3. Consider doing that business from your present location.

I swear. it brought so many memories to me. Not that anyone gave me a kobo but I felt weak reading this story because this is about a man who is about leave home to start life and there will be so many expectations from his dad. Suddenly seven years flies so fast and God knows where the journey will lead. I look back to the first time I rented my own apartment to this day and I thank God I can stand in front of my dad and he welcomes me as a son he is happy with.

This is the story of millions of male children, the journey out of the house.

With AI rapid development... You Need to max up your strength and look critically what will be useful fkr future .. Eg machine learning... Don't worry yourself about school everything csn be learnt from the 4 corners of the room . also In the abroad you mentioned they don't check your degree they are looking for what you can do so don't forget to keep the records of all what you are doing on places like github and also get a website ... I mean Your business idea is good but I recommend don't quit reading early ... I envy you .. The abroad is always there but if you don't have anything to offer even with your degree you will suffer.. Massively grow that skill and look for internships from nigeri sharpen it... Package yourself with short courses on Alison or coursera and preset some cases of what you have done 1 year internship and 1 year full time job.. Apply for works abroad .. bring evidences on your cv more than Just shitty write up and you will win...

My background I worked in 2 of the top telecoms companies in Naija before and am 50 yrs old.

I guess you are a guy so age should not be a barrier for you.

Bro 7 million is really not anything, since you are good in maths and why not go back to school.

Study computer science, strive to graduate with first class. Start reading for GRE in your final year and start applying to schools abroad for your masters.

Or

Just go and study nursing, do the required foreign exams and apply for jobs abroad. Once you get out do your masters in nursing and you are set for life.

All these take time, serious sacrifice, dedication and planning.

I cant understand your indecision, someone that can study alone should be able to do well in any formal Education. You are still young so enroll back to University course and as you are studying, sharpen your IT skills by the side. (Tell your dad you dont want the money instead he sponsor you in your University)

If you dont want to continue your education then you can rent a self con around ibeju lekki axis (350k per annum) and equip it with solar system. Then stay at home and continue with your IT studies, include web development and digital marketing in the skills to learn. You can get educative writting jobs (maths assignments, C++ assignments, etc) on freelancing sites like fiverr, peopleperhour, reddit and upwork.

By the way you can get a remote long term contract IT work online without degree, all you have to do is to study on how to pass the interview and tests.

But I will advice you to complete your formal education now, Education 1st, Skills 2nd, Making money 3rd. Stay away from any thing marriage till you are able to make decisions without coming online.

Let me give you an advice as someone who coundnt finish his education and has been struggling with life ,first 7m is no money ,in 5 months you will be looking for what you used that money for and you can’t tell, secondly any business that depends on electricity in Nigeria is sitting on time bomb ,you will always be struggling to keep the business afloat ,running a business in Nigeria is a huge risk so what am I going to advise you to do ,don’t even think of landed properties like land ,it will cease your money ,don’t try investing in agriculture or bitcoin ,it will Bleep you up ,here is my advice ,
Get yourself a keke ,get your self an apartment not expensive one but make sure no matter how small the space is ,that it’s in an area where there is constant light and good road ,pay your house rent in advance of 2 to 3 years ,
The remaining money ,use it and buy foreign container,it’s selling for 2.2m for 20ft and 5m for 40ft ,buy it and use Haib and dumb it at your village or fathers house ,make sure it’s legit before buying ..now use the keke yourself ,learn how to drive keke or minibus ,you say you want to learn programming, once in a while ,carry your keke and run out and do small business ,use the money to buy food stuffs and keep and keep learning your programming til you are sure you have learnt well and able to hook yourself with jobs ,you see that container,it doesn’t wear or tear and the price increases by daily and it’s easy to sell unlike lands ,sell the container when ever you feel like to invest in your programming business that’s when you are seeing jobs

You have a very fantastic plan, solving hard leetcode problem is no small feat, I cannot even solve a medium difficulty leetcode problem, even though I have like 4 yrs work experience in US. Your plans are great, you can set this all up, and as well work remotely from Lagos. Your skills in C++ should be getting you gigs in Fiverr or upwork. If you have a bachelors then you can also apply for masters in US. Please continue the leetcode practice also it’s very valuable

There is nothing sad about his story. It is normal humble beginning. It will only be sad if he doesn't pull through with his learning. For now, the sky is your limit. Forget about dropping out of school. School is for learning and not necessarily success, for success takes alot of determination, risks, and perseverance.
Hedge fund and trading is good but think of more stable profession with your C++ programming skills i.e. software developer etc. while you can trade by the side. Don't make trading your full time job.
Focus! Focus!! Focus!!! You father will later be very proud of you.

Your dedication to self-teaching C++ (solving hard LeetCode problems in <40 minutes) and studying math 8 hours daily is impressive, and at 24, you’re far from wasting your life. Your goal to master C++, DSA, and math for scholarships abroad and a quant trading career is achievable. The ₦7 million from your dad is a golden opportunity, but your plan to start a computer business center in PH or Akwa Ibom, while practical, may not fully align with your tech ambitions. Here’s a quick take:

Business Center Plan:

- Pros: Uses your experience (typing, JAMB registrations); costs ~₦1.5–₦2.5M to start; earns ₦70K–₦140K monthly; leaves study time.

- Cons: Limited growth (~₦200K/month ceiling); competes with many centers; doesn’t build tech CV for scholarships/hedge funds.

- Tweaks: Pick a shop near schools; code an app for registrations to stand out; save 50% of profits.

Better Options (with ₦7M):

1. Freelance Coding (~₦1M setup): Earn ₦2M–₦9M/year on Upwork with C++ gigs (10 hours/week). Build DSA projects for scholarships. Save ₦5M in fixed deposit (~₦500K interest/year). Best fit: Direct tech experience, portfolio growth.

2. POS Fintech (~₦2M setup): Deploy 50 POS terminals, earn ₦6M–₦12M/year from transaction fees. Manage 2–3 hours/day, code a tracking tool. Ties to quant finance. High returns, scalable.

3. Online Tutoring (~₦1M setup): Teach math/C++ online, earn ₦2M–₦9M/year (10 hours/week). Reinforces skills, builds CV. Flexible, scholarship-friendly.

Advice:
- Move to Uyo (cheaper, quieter than PH); live on ₦50K–₦70K/month.
- Freelance first: It leverages your skills, funds studies, and impresses scholarship panels. Save ₦5M+ for visa/travel.
- Ease Dad’s Worries: Show him a 2–3-year plan (freelance + scholarship apps) and a small C++ project (e.g., trading bot).
- Avoid Burnout: Add 1–2 hours daily for exercise or meetups to stay sharp.

Don't, Don't I repeat cash out that money.

Your challenge is that you are in denial that you are chronically depressed.

Staying indoor for 2 weeks is serious red flag.

You need to seek, join a local community church, join a department, get around people.

Seek mentorship.

You need your parent to help you through the process.

You should have gotten your degree. This is something you will regret especially as the years go by. Also learning DSA and maths to a high level while being great wont really do much for you in Nigeria. Immigration laws are also getting much more strict especially as the years go by.

God bless your dad. I'll say don't make decisions in a hurry, ask him for a year to prepare yourself and sort things out, then collect the 7m at the end of the year.

During the grace period, build your connection on LinkedIn and YouTube, it's usually not as easy as it seems but the support you'll get being in the house will go a long way to cushion some of the hardship.

I'm sure if you're not distracted in this one year and you seriously focus on leveraging what you already know you'll definitely achieve success.

I'll discourage opening a business center as it will divide your attention, it will mean you focusing on 2 things at once and that with intense pressure to not squander you capital.

God be with you bro. 7m seems huge but it can vanish in a moment not because of you carelessness or negligence but because of Nigerias economic reality and the volatile nature of business.

Good luck bro

Another reason is that, this business would give me time to also study and sharpen my Math/Programming skills. I plan to rent a shop that is big enough so that I can also be sleeping/living there.

Now I seriously need advicing because this is such a turning point in my life and the next few years is going to make or break me because there is no room for any disastrous bad decision cry
Impressive accomplishment, reply with your leetcode profile.
However, my advice to you is to get a programming job right now, this will help you build real word skills and solving real world challenges which aligns with your future progression. You can join devcenter one of the top programming communities I know in Nigeria you can get a job through that platform.

7M naira may not be too much but its something tho. But right now I would focus on earning good income to boost that capital, sadly your only choice is to relocate and you need capital or you can build a solution in Nigeria and seek investments that is not easy too.

Now I seriously need advicing because this is such a turning point in my life and the next few years is going to make or break me because there is no room for any disastrous bad decision cry

Can one make it in the sports niche in youtube?
