ALLOW WOMEN TO ALSO BECOME CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF. Add Police, Navy and Airforce. Nigeria is always discriminating along gender lines. |

GenghisCan:Infantrymen are foot-soldiers. They are the ones who carry Aks, daggers and hand grenades. They fight on land using rifles, daggers, hand-to-hand combat etc to destroy or decimate enemies on land. The soldiers you see collecting offerings on the road are mostly infantrymen. |

[quote author=JuanDeDios post=134995667]Interesting that Obasanjo had four Chiefs of Army Staff and none was Yoruba. It's unheard of these days for a president to have a CoAS from outside his "region". This country always progresses backward.[/quote He didn't win anything election in Yoruba land in 1999. I think he had much believe in his nothern Friends. |

Racoon:Gowon was never the first Chief of Army Staff of Nigeria, please correct it. It's Maj. Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi https://military-history.fandom.com/wiki/Chief_of_Army_Staff_(Nigeria) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnson_Aguiyi-Ironsi https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Nigerian-Chiefs-of-Army-Staff-Since-Independence_tbl3_338839917 Stop taking unverified Yoruba media publications designed to sideline and malign Igbos seriously please. They are misleading you, please correct that list, it's a historic lie ![]() General Aguiyi Ironsi was the first Nigerian to head Nigeria's military after the British colonial masters handed over power to Nigerians. Please check the reputable links. During Aguiyi Ironsi's reign, the position was: General Commanding Officer of The Entire Nigerian Army, who was the head of Nigeria Army as at that time. It was after him that Gowon then came on board.

Wispower:The same usual victim mentality over and over again. From the time you mentioned of Ejoor to Ogomudia, Yorubas were in charge of the country on 3 separate occasions....not in one of them did we get a COAS despite the fact that we have more states than the SE and did not have the setback of the civil war (which means realistically senior SE Army officers stood almost no chance from 1967- 90 as obviously only those recruited after the war (1970) would have stood a chance). We all know that if Tinubu had not won the election there is no way Lagbaja or this new guy would have even smelt the position. But did you hear us beating the drums of war when we only had 1 COAS after 40 years despite occupying 7 states? Should we ask for a review as to how Delta State alone had surpassed the whole of Yorubaland in that time? Are the Yoruba, Igbo and Delta the only ethnicities in Southern Nigeria? Like I said, no matter what the facts are, you must claim persecution...this is the same region that if I strolled alone inside uniform today, I would be beheaded before one could say Jack Robinson. |
| Re: Chronicles Of Chiefs Of Army Staff (COAS) Of Nigeria by AndroBlaze: 6:46pm On Apr 15, 2025 |
franchasng:Despite you silly ethnic baiting, I agree that historically Gen Aguiyi-Ironsi is by all intents, the first indigenous Chief of Army Staff in Nigeria. |
| Re: Chronicles Of Chiefs Of Army Staff (COAS) Of Nigeria by franchasng: 7:01pm On Apr 15, 2025 |
AndroBlaze:I made my post referencing Yoruba media because it was the cable and the likes that started this historic lie that Yakubu Gowon was the first Indigenous Head of Nigerian Army instead of Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi just to malign Igbos as usual. What is difficult in reporting the truth? Why twist history just to massage the ego of your people when you know it's not the truth? Gowon was just a mere Lt Colonel when Aguiyi Ironsi was decorated a Major General and head of Nigeria Army, so how was it possible for a Lt. Colonel to head the Army when there was a Major General? And if you check list of all the heads of Nigeria Army right from the colonial masters, it is only Yakubu Gowon that led Nigerian Army as a Colonel, and it was because by the time Ironsi became Military Head of State of Nigeria, Yakubu was the next senior officer or so from the North.

JuanDeDios:APC and The drug lord weaponized tribalism and glorified it to the.level we have it today. Nigeria was glorious under the pdp era when it comes to unity. Buhari built the foundations of tribalism and the drug lord is raising it higher on a daily basis. |

franchasng:Oga stop giving me history lesson that I already knew in order to justify your bias and need to play the victim card. If you did not notice I was the first one to question this thread that was started by a non-Yoruba, so please don't bring the whole tribe into this because una no know simple history. I had already accepted that Ironsi was the first defacto COAS, the same way I hope you will accept that there was a loyal Efik man who officially seniored him by at least 3 years and was strategically schemed out due to politicians in the NCNC (Wellington Bassey, NA1). Also even when Gowon was chief of Army Staff, it was mainly ceremonial and administrative as he still had many seniors he had to salute including Brigadier Bassey, "The Duke" as he was fondly called. |

| Re: Chronicles Of Chiefs Of Army Staff (COAS) Of Nigeria by franchasng: 8:35pm On Apr 15, 2025 |
AndroBlaze:My brother, Head of Army of any country is done by appointment by the head of state of the country; he choose who he feels more comfortable working with for his safety, security and smooth relationship. So there is nothing wrong with Nigeria's President and Prime Minister then appointing Maj. Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi as their preferred Head of Nigeria's Army, the position is not done by seniority, the President and Head of State pick who they prefer among qualified military officers. So there is nothing out of place in Maj. Gen. Ironsi being appointed or selected as Head of Nigeria's Army instead of his senior Gen. Wellington because the position is usually more of political appointment than military seniority Presidents all over the world do it. The only reason I countered the thread is to correct a historic lie that Yakubu Gowon was the first Indigenous Head of Nigeria's Army whereas it was Maj. Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi. If Yakubu was the officer Nnamdi Azikiwe and Belewa selected to serve as Nigeria's first Indigenous head of Army, I wouldn't have countered the thread because that will be the truth based on records and facts. But twisting a clear record and fact just to malign Igbos is what I couldn't stand or ignored. So yes you are correct that Bassey Wellington was the first Nigerian commissioned military officer, but he wasn't the first Indigenous Head of Nigeria's Army. |

franchasng:I can't argue with anything here. It has always been a political appointment, which is unfortunately one of the reasons why professionalism will suffer in a highly politicised country like Nigeria. |
