The message from the DSS chief saying citizens should protect themselves, an admission of their failure, is premise for unregulated inflow of arms and ammunitions into the country. Even in the US where there's database for these things, it's still a problem, not to mention a country where no such stop-gaps are in place. Calls of that nature are more likely to make a Sudan or Sierra Leone of Nigeria than it is to make it a United States where the citizens feel protected because they're armed.

We'd end up creating a system where strong men like Agwaza move unchecked.

If Nigeria is to allow citizens right to bear arms, it has to be done properly, and not via unguarded statements from the DSS chiefs and Batists looking to absolve their principal of his primary responsibility.
You are actually right on DSS being a failed organization/security agency.

If DSS was indeed a functional intelligence agency, they would've gathered intelligence on this repeated massacre reoccurring in the middle belt and put a stop to it. I mean how can we claim to have an intelligence agency in Nigeria when Fulani militia can just move from one community to another, massacre a large number of inhabitants and it happens again and again and again?

I get you, the daughter should've been enough reason for him to not turn the baby mama away ; you are right he was thinking only about his new woman at that point.

If I happened to be the baby mama's relative, I will also be pained she passed away in the tragic incident resulting from the complicated events that happened earlier in the day.

As regards Ur last paragraph, I feel the OGs in the past that have gotten into such instances may have acted worse but we don't know because none of their actions and inactions led to such tragic loss of life. Do you know that the baba mama could've died in her sleep while he accommodated her and the news we will see on the internet will be " Baba mama dies mysteriously while visting her baby daddy after a long time ". The baby daddy will be arrested and questioned for days by the Nigerian police especially if the family just like this insist they suspect foul play with or without evidence.

While death is inevitable and unpredictable, traveling inter-state by road in Nigeria twice in a day, where our highways are nothing but glorified dead traps increases the chances of harm occurring. She survived traveling to Lagos but somehow, the guy lost every sense of rational thinking and decided to ask her to return, knowing she submits to him. While death is unpredictable, you and I make conscious decision daily that we believe decreases the probability of death.

A few decades ago, after my dad lost a brother, he made a decision that we still respect till today. Neither him nor any of his children, especially his boys ever fly or travel together, irrespective of the circumstance. The boys get on different flights to the same destination, never in the same car if traveling long distances. You may argue it is extreme or makes no sense but he knows what he is doing and is guided by his life experience.

Just pray someday you'd leave the limited horizons of your childhood so your kids would experience life in a multi-religio-ethnic place and you'd come to that realization that demonizing hundreds of millions of people because of their religious leaning with no regard for the intricacies their ethnic and nuances of parental upbringing might play makes no sense. You realize it watching them bring home Muslim friends or achieving things together.

The victims of herdsmen attacks in Uromi are also Muslims since Uromi is multi-religious and has Muslims amongst its populace.

Plateau has Muslims too. Benue isn't exempted. The farms of Ondo these marauding herdsmen throng pillaging wantonly have Muslims as their owners too.

Some of you grew up never experiencing interactions with people of other religious affiliations so you feed off the mangled stereotypes told to you by your kith who are just as prejudiced.

What would you attribute what has come to resemble a well orchestrated attack on the people of Plateau and Benue to?

Is it ethnic, religious, political or multi-faceted?

I've seen videos of some of these attackers yelling religious chants, have also seen people say it's ethnic cleansing at play, and in some instances it's said that people are being killed because of the rare earth minerals on their lands.

The emboldened hit me cos I've driven interstate with my entire family in tow from the South-east to the South-west, and returned back to the East a few times in the past few years.

Big Big Risk but

Accident ❌
Kidnappers❌
Vehicular issues❌

I gats still run the route later this year for my younger brother's wedding in Lagos, and flight no be option.

Most likely na only me go travel so I go use commercial bus.

The roads have been kind and I'm thankful.

Sociopolitical/ethnic reasons is more like it. No other ethnic group which is predominantly Muslim goes marauding like these Herdsmen. Ghana is battling the Fulani herdsmen - farmer crises too and it's happening in Muslim regions of Ghana.

It's a sociopolitical failing.

I've seen videos of some of these attackers yelling religious chants, have also seen people say it's ethnic cleansing at play, and in some instances it's said that people are being killed because of the rare earth minerals on their lands.
I'd show you videos of ISIS decapitations and setting off bombs in the Middle East while yelling these religious incantations. The Middle East which is almost homogeneously Muslim dominated.

It's ethnic cleansing quite alright. And, based on what's happening in Congo with the cobalt mines and other rare minerals funded by foreign bodies, it sure is happening in Nigeria.

That village boy who believes he's found his niche on this thread spreading Zionist propaganda in hopes of being 'unique' to compensate for his intellectual deficiency doesn't even realize Israel's IDF has more Muslim soldiers than Christians and there are almost 9 times more Muslims in Israel than Christians.

Thankful for journey mercies.
Right from my childhood it is a tradition in our family that we don't travel all at once. Most of the travels my parents did, they did without we the children. Sometimes mummy might go with one of my two sisters , while dad travel solo leaving me and my other sister at home.

No matter how important the occasion is, we always have at least one member of the nuclear family not traveling. I never read meaning to it until I was much grown and thought maybe it was an intentional risk management technique on the part of my parents.

When I asked my parents if that was indeed their intentions, my mum said "Olorun maje a ku akurun" (Which roughly translates to "May we not die tragically with our entire lineage wiped off" )

The first time I heard of this, I was surprised because one girl whenever coming to school will never travel with her brother and I wondered why you take that decision, After I thought about it, it weirdly makes sense from a risk management and Disaster recovery POV

But if the family has one car and you have to say go from Lagos to Ilorin or driving from Maryland to Atlanta, will that mean some will drive and the others will split into 4 different commercial vehicles?

Its simply a battle for resources, especially grazing land that is not available where they are coming from

Most human beings will not die or starve to death in peace, they will rather die trying

A combination of desertification and terrorism has made many people leave their homeland. Imagine a herdsman originally from Yobe whose land is no longer producing grass for his animals plus Boko Haram/ISWAP will either kill him, terrorize him or kill his animals

What are the options left you? Probably migrate. You realize its some peoples land that you will be migrating to and they will likely put up resistance

Tat is why we will see more Northerners migrating from their homeland. If people in Delta are complaining about Herdsmen, how much more people in Plateau and Benue that are just around the corner

With more insecurity, many people will leave and move somewhere else and cause discomfort to the original owners of the place. In some cases it can escalate into physical violence

And in a situation where one of the family members that traveled solo meets misfortune, the phrasing would be it could have been all of them meeting that misfortune, even though they could have traveled together in one of the vehicles that didn't meet misfortune and arrived safely. grin

There's some logic to it sha, but I see it as one of those things that would get tossed out the window in a country where road travel is safe cause on a norms splitting trips like that comes with lots of inconvenience.

I've traveled with my family a few times interstate, but of late I don dey get even more opposed to the idea of even traveling alone interstate, though that would have been the convenient way to go about things.

For Ilorin and depending on the size of the family, you don't need 5 cars to transport 5 members of your family because that isn't realistic. If you can afford it, add commercial travel buses to the plan. Separate the genders and parents if the family has both.

Planning a trip in the US is easier in comparison. Use a 2nd car or rent one and break it into 2 or fly half of them if you can afford. I no dey take unnecessary risks because everyday na betting for life and I dey choose my odds carefully.

We no dey pray for evil and God has been gracious but choose your odds carefully to reduce the probabilities of negative outcomes or if they happen, the severity of the impact is not extreme.

It sounds morbid but it also helps to prevent entire annihilation of family lines.

Imagine if the Wigwes or the Siemens CEO who died in the helicopter crash had adopted that strategy maybe some of them will still be alive today.

The day the girl told me, and the reason. I initially thought some parents will actually want you to travel together so you keep an eye on the other, n my mind, I was like, so your dad thinks one of you might die at least the other will be alive. It was an uneasy thought but it was the brutal cold reality which can happen but people dont like to think about. Is that every trip can end in 2 ways dead or alive

The same thinking goes into business why companies dont put all their data in one location in case of disaster to one. Life itself is a risk you cant protect everything but you should try your best to minimize it

Even in the US accidents happen, drunk drivers yapa, plane crash happens. So I see no reasons why you shouldnt apply it anywhere regardless of location

Yes and it makes sense, there are other applications of this too in the "real world" imagine Egbon Gloriousgbola traveling with his wife , they have to go separately and will land separately, that gives the opportunity to camp one sidechic in the hotel give her one or two hot rounds before going to sync up with the 1st wife

And claim flight delays, travel delay, car troubles on the road

If you propose to your wife that from now on we will be traveling separately because of travel problems. how do you think she will respond?

My mum's friend died in an accident which involved herself, her husband and two of their children.

The bus they were travelling in from Ilesha to Lagos somersaulted, the woman was flung out of the window and she hit her head on the tarred road. Although she died in the accident, their family was "lucky" because her husband survived with a neck injury, one of the daughters had a dislocated arm and the second daughter had a minor bruise on her head.

The incident was one of the reasons I dread road traveling across this country o. It was also what made me see sense in my own parent's disposition to family travel

I see it as one of those things where you just have to be right once sha, though I think for the average first world person that didn't grow in a system where interstate travel was almost a coin-toss, this would hardly ever be something that would factor in their traveling plans, especially since there are strong arguments to be made for a family traveling as a group.
