Lagos To Unveil Special Vehicle Number Plates For PWDs by Dapagun(op): 4:29am On Apr 23, 2025
The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce vehicle number plates to identify persons with disabilities in the state.

Speaking at the 2025 ministerial press briefing to mark the second year of Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term as governor on Tuesday, the transportation commissioner, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the Lagos State Number Plate Production Authority will implement the scheme.

“The authority is also into the production of customised 716 fancy motor vehicle plates and 347 motorcycle fancy plates for vehicle owners on request,” he said.

The commissioner added that LSNPPA produced 224 out-of-series number plates on special requests and unique numbering needs.

“The authority issued 11,152 standard number plate replacements, 212 motorcycle plate replacements, and 63 standard fancy replacements to maintain accurate vehicle identification.

“They also produced 428 official number plates, 1,510 dealer plates and 4,000 articulated vehicle plates,” he said.

Osiyemi said that the authority, in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps, was developing initiatives that would lead to the production of number plates that would align with the ’Go Green’ initiatives.

Regarding the fading of number plates, he said the state used high-quality materials in their production.

“We should also understand that fading of the number plate is a function of the kind of material we use to wash our cars, which are very corrosive.

“We should also know that as man has a life span, so also are plate numbers; and they should be changed when the need arises,” he said.

I was trying to see where the commissioner would mention the benefits of having those number plates, but it wasn't mentioned anywhere. Talking about benefits is a basic marketing strategy. This is common sense. I don't know where they get these people to work in public service.

How is it better than any state in water supply, when people are drinking borehole water diluted with faeces?

Do you think that T-Pain and his successors have looted all the money that should employ workers to make water flow into Lagos homes, offices, factories, schools etc?

Lawmaker scores Lagos Water Corporation low

A Lagos State lawmaker, Mr Saka Fafunmi, on Thursday expressed dissatisfaction at the performance of the state Water Corporation.

Fafunmi, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), said in Ikeja that the corporation had not been able to justify statutory allocations to it.

The lawmaker, who represents Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency 1 at the assembly, spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said that the corporation had the capacity to generate much fund internally through water rates but had relied solely on government funding because of poor performance.

'' Anyone that is using water will be willing to pay for it; the corporation has not been giving us water.

"Is there any new community that Water Corporation has given water? People depend on boreholes; even government estates have industrial boreholes.

"Why do we keep pumping money into an agency that does not give us the desired results?'' he asked.

He noted that the Adiyan Waterworks was located at Ifako-Ijaiye, where many of the residents had resorted to digging boreholes as a means of getting water.

''A lot of people are falling sick because they don't drink clean water.

''In the same compound, where you have sewage, is where you have a borehole.

''There is no way you can manage the sewage that it will not leak and pollute the water; everyone drinking such is drinking contaminated water,'' he said.

The lawmaker urged the corporation to increase water reticulation and supply to residents.

This is a good initiative. I once saw a dead person driving and wondered how they would be able to hear the horn of a vehicle behind them. At least a special number plate will make the drive behind know that they need to overtake with caution.

Splashme:
The first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, on Tuesday, said that the cancellation of the Lagos metroline project in 1985 was a major mistake and disservice to many Nigerians.

Jakande spoke in Lagos during the launch of a book which chronicled his life in politics and journalism.

The book, entitled, ‘Jakande: Leadership in Action’ is written by Dr. Bola Olaosebikan, who told the audience at the event that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was not responsible for the cancellation of the project.

Jakande said, “Reflecting on the metroline project, I think it is a major disservice to many Nigerians. Imagine how many people would have benefitted. It would have made life easier and changed the face of transport in Lagos. Whoever cancelled it or gave the advice towards its cancellation didn’t do right.”

The former governor asked Nigerians not to vote for unserious leaders in the coming polls, saying the elections presented Nigerians with a good opportunity that should not be squandered.

Expressing the hope that Nigeria would soon overcome its developmental challenges, Jakande said hope would be actualised faster if credible people emerged as leaders in the next dispensation.

He said, “This book comes at a very auspicious time in Nigeria’s history as we need leaders who can act. We need leaders who would not compromise the standards of good governance. God has blessed this nation the most in Africa, although we have not reached where we should be; with the right leaders, Nigeria would overcome its challenges.”

IT'S A FACT THAT 90% OF GOVERNORS IN NIGERIA SINCE 1999 WITH REVENUES AT THEIR DISPOSAL CANNOT BOAST OF A QUARTER OF THESE ACHIEVEMENTS EVEN WITHIN THEIR EIGHT YEARS IN OFFICE.

I thought of stigmatisation too that's I asked for the benefits. At least if the pros outweigh the cons, they will be encouraged to go for it. I was hoping to see that they would be free to use the BRT lanes, won't pay tolls at the tollgates, etc. That's a basic marketing strategy.

I thought of this as well!

Again can such plate numbers vehicles travel to abuja without security harassment?

How many agencies would now be issuing number plate when Road Safty is already known for producing substandard plate numbers that get faded within few years. cheesy

This was how another medium reported it.

In Lagos, a special number plate for persons with disabilities (PWDs) offers recognition and potentially benefits like free medical care and access to accessible public transportation. The Lagos State Number Plate Production Authority (LSNPPA) is implementing a scheme to identify PWDs with specially designed number plates. This could lead to improved accessibility for PWDs, as the government is also working to ensure public buildings and structures are accessible.

Benefits of a special number plate for PWDs in Lagos:

Recognition and Identification:
The number plate serves as a visual identifier for PWDs, potentially facilitating access to services and support designed for them.

Access to Services:
The special number plate might be linked to accessing government-provided services, such as free healthcare in public institutions, as stipulated in the Lagos State Special Peoples' Law.

Improved Accessibility:
The government's commitment to making public buildings and transport accessible could be further supported by the use of these number plates, potentially leading to a more inclusive environment.

Enhanced Public Awareness:
The special number plate can raise public awareness about PWDs and their needs, fostering a more understanding and supportive community.

Potential for Special Discounts or Privileges:
While not explicitly mentioned, the special number plate could potentially be used to access discounts or privileges in various sectors, further enhancing the lives of PWDs.
Financial Assistance and Support:
The Lagos State Government has also provided financial assistance to homes that care for persons with disabilities.

The Lagos State Number Plate Production Authority (LSNPPA) is actively involved in producing these special number plates.
