Nigeria cannot be treated in isolation, if the issues raised are Germaine and impactful on the country's constitution as regards data and privacy 🔏...,then Meta is on a long thing because other countries will follow |

No wahala. You may exit Nigeria if the profits from Nigeria is not worth it. If the government did not value your Free Basics initiative, a service offering free access to basic internet services to people, of which Nairaland is also accessible with it, they should feel free to take any decision that benefits Meta business. |

The Nigerians data WhatsApp and Facebook collects, does it stay in Nigeria or it is sent to the parent company? Why would Facebook send users data out of the country? |

BItt:They have their servers outside Nigeria. Will they come and be having servers in a country where they're not sure of the safety of its assets or electricity? They can't even be burning fuel etc because they are also a part of this carbon neutral bulshit. |

This government is systematically heading the way of North Korea. Disengaging social media is their plan all along. It will soon happen. Those allegations are mere excuses. Open your eyes my people. |

It is clear that WhatsApp isn’t fighting to prove they’re right; they’re challenging Nigeria’s right to hold them accountable. We're NOT the first to indict them for breaching data protection laws. In 2021, the EU slapped WhatsApp with a €225 million fine for violating GDPR transparency rules. Just days ago, Apple and Meta faced another heavy fine for illegal data processing in Europe. If European regulators are serious about data privacy, why shouldn’t Nigeria be? 51 million WhatsApp users in Nigeria, we should hold Meta to the same standards. It's not only about the money, it's about respect. We must no longer be known as the "anything goes" country. Nigeria’s data protection laws exist for a reason—if Meta breaks them, they should pay the price. Period. Let's start thinking of creating local alternatives. Are we not all here on a Nigerian platform, arguing and insulting ourselves every day? What is WhatsApp, what are servers, what is Data Center that we cannot maintain? |

Why is the present Government vehemently pushing anti-citizen initiatives? If WhatsApp decides to halt its activities in Nigeria due to these hefty fines, many businesses will bear the brunt! Over 90% of my clientele are sourced from WhatsApp. ![]() |
