Blocking them hides their posts from us, making it hard to know their stance and making it impossible to correct them.
I would prefer a 'dislike' button to their posts over blocking, so we can see their views and respond accordingly.
Does a dislike button stops someone from harassing you?

Okay. But does it really matter?

Gbadugbakun:
It's a useless feature because users don't communicate like Facebook or Twitter where they post directly on your thread.

Nairaland is a forum were people post randomly. Blocking someone is useless because you'll still come across their posts on random threads.
He clearly said if you block someone you won't see the person you blocked and the person will not see you for a week

Dear Nairalanders,

We have just activated a feature that allows you to block people who harass you for a period of time (currently a week).

When you block someone, you will be automatically blocked back by that person, so you won't be able to see each others' posts.

When the fixed period is over, you will both be released automatically, giving you another chance to treat each other better.

The admin, super-moderators, and moderators cannot block people or be blocked.

To block someone, visit the person's profile and click on the [ Block ] button shown below:

Enjoy your new power. But remember that you're also blocking yourself. wink
Some people deserve life time blocking

If it's a feature you expect me to use, then I have a right to make an input. Create a dislike tab instead

Only those who are desperate to spew hate on a faceless platform will dislike this feature. If people don’t like it when you speak, it’s could be because the only thing that comes out of you is unreasonable behavior and unnecessary hate. Ponder on that.
Factos!

So the trick is to be blocking every other week. Got it!

I will dedicate Sundays at 8 p.m. to doing this.

This is the best thing on this site ever, thank you!

Seun might actually be Helinues.

Because that view... except if that's a SuperMods view.

But someone like Seun probably has 3 or more troll accounts that he uses to catch fun and drive traffic.

Maybe Seun is Righteousness2 though that one' isn't the brightest bulb
I always suspect Helinues to be a burner account of either seun or some super mods

@Seun

As a user and member of NL for 20 years now since 2005, I can CLEARLY affirm here and now that the "block feature" which is effective for only 1 week that you've just introduced is a giant leap for this NL discussion forum and it shows you are truly listening to genuine real world suggestions and taking ACTION. More actions are expected. Read this insightful post to the end to gain more insights.

I will ALSO CLEARLY advice that you keep the usual NL Super-Moderators (such as Myndd44 & Dominique) to manually ban for at least 5 years any well-known and fake NL moniker that still uses defamatory ethnic slur words which have to be urgently censored here on NL such as: ["Yari.banza" "Yari.bastard, Yeri.banza, etc, which are coined ethnic slur words meaning "Yoruba bas.tard" with "banza" meaning "bastard or illegitimate" in Hausa language BUT these slur words were actually coined and used relentlessly to insult Yoruba folks by ONLY ipob sympathizers on NL, FB, YouTube and other online platforms for years now], deliberately derailing threads and toxic disinformation MOSTLY by the male and female ipob members and thousands of recruited paid ipob online troll farms (using thousands of free laptops, free mobile phones, and free Internet data given to them) who are based in Nigeria, South Africa, Europe, North America, and Asia as EXPOSED by the undercover "BBC Global Disinformation Team" investigative video of May 12, 2022 which is still online and attached right BELOW which accurately EXPOSED ipob for being responsible for ALL the relentless spread of massive online disinformation, cyberbullying, toxic hate speech on Facebook, X, YouTube, WhatsApp, [and here on Nairaland] with the intention to trigger ethnic unrests and destabilize Nigeria through a Civil War.

Ipob: Nigerian (Secessionist) 'media warriors' call for killings on social media over Biafra
=>https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-61354014
The BBC's investigation revealed many other influential Ipob supporters also operating outside the country, openly promoting disinformation.

BBC News Africa • May 12 2022

Further more, I will send some of the moniker identities of these identified "ipob paid online troll farms" using NL for years now as a propaganda medium to spread massive disinformation to your main email OR any confidential email that you want me to use soon with massive EVIDENCE.

Last but NOT least, the relentless defamatory insults and disinformation on NL being pushed by these same paid online troll farms [even up till this morning despite prior corrections, calling the now President Bola Tinubu "a drug baron, Thief.nubu, Iragbiji druggie, drug and cocaine sniffer, Pablo Escobar, etc"] MUST be stopped now on NL. It's NOT true that the U.S-educated Bola Tinubu has ever been convicted in the United States of being a drug baron.

As far back as 1993, the U.S. Federal authorities cleared now President Bola Tinubu of any wrongdoings and even in 2003, the United States Embassy in Lagos State through the then Legal Attache of the United States Embassy, Michael H. Bonner CLEARLY stated in an official document ATTACHED right BELOW that the then Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State wasn't wanted for any drug crimes in the United States and has NEVER been convicted of ANY crimes in the United States of America based off of the information contained in the "FBI National Crime Information Center" or NCIC database, which is the CENTRAL database containing the names of all convicted people in the entire history of the United States.

More sweeping changes are needed here on NL to remove all observed inneficiences.

Keep up the good work Seun.

Cheers.

To be fair though, Reddit has the block feature. But yes, most commentators will abuse it to the extent discourse don't flow very well and Nairaland risks turning into an echo chamber. The one week period is great else, it would have been way worse. Your other option of ranking posts is way better. The more likes and less likes, the higher the comment gets in a thread.
This would have worked, but unfortunately A.P.C bots have found a way to generate phantom likes.

Why for a week? Can we set block time ourselves, or unblock when we want?

budaatum:
Where is this block button?

Oh golly, I found the block button! It completely blocks so you see no posts by blocked person unless quoted by others.

Unfortunately, I tested it on AmazonTopaz, as I planned to ask if she's informed I blocked her. And now she's blocked so I can't read any posts by AmazonTopaz unless quoted by others. And its currently permanent as there is no option yet to unblock AmazonTopaz.

Seun! Temporary blocks please so I can unblock AmazonTopaz!
