On Tuesday morning, the Special Assistant on Media to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Dada Olusegun, shared two images on X to compare water transportation during Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Lagos Governor, Sanwo-Olu.

He captioned his post, “Water transportation in Anambra under Obi Vs Water Transportation in Lagos under Babajide Sanwo-Olu.”

At press time, the post has garnered over 54,000 views, has been liked by more than 800 X users, and retweeted more than 300 times.

In the first image, Obi is seen in a wooden canoe in front of a house that appeared submerged in a flood, with only its roof visible.

In the second image, Sanwo-Olu is seen holding the rail of a white boat.

Claim: The picture posted by Olusegun to represent water transportation during Obi’s tenure as governor of Anambra was taken when he was the governor of the state.

Verification: Using Dupli Checker, a reverse image tool for fact-checking, The Guardian checked the images that matched the one posted by Olusegun on Google.

Various similar searches showed up. Two were featured images of news stories published by Daily Post and Daily Trust, two Nigerian-based newspapers, in 2022.

The picture was taken when Obi visited people who lost their homes to a flood in Umueri, a community in Anambra, in October 2022.

Peter Obi was the governor of Anambra between 2006 and 2014.

Conclusion: The image posted by Tinubu’s media aide is misleading as it was taken eight years after Obi’s tenure.

He never said it was during Obi or whether it was 1999. Basically, what he is showing is that Obi was a mediocre governor who couldn’t set up a normal water transportation system in Anambra.

It’s not only water tho. Even the fire service in Anambra is nonsense. They don’t even have water to quench fire and Delta state usually bail them out almost everytime.

But nothing soil still. If it is still like that in 2012, it means it has been like that even when Obi was governor.

So you can still use it. People still abuse Tinubu of any wrong thing in Lagos even after he left the governorship position almost 18 years ago.

But the way it was presented by a presidential aide turns it into a deliberate piece of misinformation aimed at deceiving unsuspecting Nigerians. You can already see how platforms like Instablog and even some Nairalanders, like Helinues, have taken the bait. That’s why I said the fact-check report was spot on.

You are right.

Lot of misrepresentation and overrepresentation on Twitter or social media space from everyone. Even Obi himself is guilty of the same thing multiple times.

Infact, Sanwoolu only made that statement against Obi because of almost the same thing. How can Sanwoolu and other governors be running over to international investors, pitching good things about their states so investor can come, then Obi go to same place and start bandying wrong statistics to affect the outlook?
