Chad receives Chinese-made air defense systems
By Dylan Malyasov- Apr 24, 2025

Chad has reportedly taken delivery of two Chinese-made FK-2000 air defense systems, supplied by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as part of ongoing military support initiatives.

According to local sources, the systems were purchased by the UAE from China and transferred to Chad to enhance the country’s air defense capabilities.

The FK-2000, manufactured by China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC), is a short-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system designed to engage a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The system is frequently compared to Russia’s Pantsir-S1, combining a mobile missile platform with dual automatic cannons to provide layered air defense.

The FK-2000 is mounted on a heavy wheeled chassis and integrates 12 surface-to-air missiles along with two 30mm cannons. Its radar system offers all-weather, day-and-night target detection, with engagement ranges from 1.2 to 25 kilometers and altitude coverage up to 12 kilometers.

The launcher is equipped with a radar station and an unmanned turret featuring search radars. An optional electro-optical infrared targeting system can also be mounted for backup fire control operations.

Sources within Chad’s Ministry of Defense confirmed the delivery of advanced air defense systems from the UAE but declined to specify the exact type or number of units received.

The UAE has a history of acquiring weapon systems from various suppliers and transferring them to regional partners.

For example, the UAE previously supplied Russian-made Pantsir-S1 air defense systems mounted on MAN trucks to Libyan factions during that country’s ongoing conflict.

DSS Foils Arms Procurement Plot, Recovers Weapons in Delta, Arrests British Army Officer and Associates

According to multiple reports , the Department of State Services (DSS) on Friday has foiled an arms procurement plot in Delta State, recovering 50 AK-47 rifles, six pump-action shotguns, and over 3,000 rounds of ammunition. The agency arrested several suspects, including an Itsekiri serving as a Major in the British Army, who allegedly procured the weapons at the behest of an individual named Collins.

The suspects were apprehended in a covert operation near Asaba, Delta State, and the British Army officer was intercepted at the Lagos airport as he attempted to flee to the United Kingdom. The DSS suspects the arms were intended to instigate unrest in Warri, possibly in connection with the delineation of wards and polling units in the Warri Federal Constituency. A traditional ruler is also under investigation in connection with the matter. The DSS has pledged a thorough and transparent investigation, vowing to hold accountable those found plotting tribal conflicts

“COAS CHARGES OFFICERS TO EXPLORE INGENIOUS, WORKABLE IDEAS FOR TACKLING EMERGING SECURITY THREATS…Initiates 211 Demonstration Battalion Barracks construction in Bauchi”

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede has charged officers of the Nigerian Army (NA) to demonstrate purposeful leadership, resilience and unwavering commitment to mission objectives. The COAS gave the charge to participants of the Combat Arms Training (CAT) Week 2025, Co-Hosted by the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps and the Armoured Corps in Bauchi, on Monday 28 April 2025. He said such approaches are veritable ways to attain successes in ongoing operations.

The COAS noted that the Training Week with the theme *“Strengthening Combat Arms Cooperation in a Joint Environment: A Pre-requisite for Success in Counter Terrorism and Counter Insurgency Operations"* is timely considering the complexiand fluid battlespace in which the NA currently operate. General Oluyede added that the success of NA operations is dependent upon the ability of the Combat Arms to harness their strengths in cohesion. The COAS further charged participants to go beyond doctrinal exercises and proffer ways to enhance the operational effectiveness of troops across theatres of operation. He urged the Combat Arms and all other Arms and services of the NA to continue to explore ingenious and workable ideas to mitigating emerging threats while making maximum use of the available resources at their disposal.

Lieutenant General Oluyede expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his strategic guidance, continuous support and encouragement to the NA through his timely and valuable interventions. He also appreciated the Governor and people of Bauchi State for their continued support to the Armoured Corps and by extension the Nigerian Army.

In his keynote address, the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, His Excellency Senator Bala Mohammed ably represented by his Deputy His Excellency, Rt Hon Mohammed Auwal Jatau expressed appreciation to the COAS and the entire NA for their continuous support to the State. He noted that such invaluable sacrifices are key to keeping the nation safe and united. According to the Governor, Bauchi State is one of the most peaceful states in the country, attributing it to the efforts of the Nigerian Army and other security agencies in the state. He assured continued collaboration with the Nigerian Army and all security agencies to keep Bauchi State safe.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Commander Armoured Corps, Major General Obinna Ajunwa, disclosed that the CAT Week was a platform to evaluate and appraise ongoing operations so as to proffer workable solutions to existential challenges. He said it will further afford participants the opportunity to review policies and Standing Operating Procedures for improved operational efficiency.

The rapidly deteriorating security landscape, especially in sub-Saharan Africa has prompted China to step up its game, its influence in Nigeria is now commendable.

Court Martial Sentences Soldier to Death by Hanging, Another to 10 Years Imprisonment

A General Court Martial (GCM) sitting at the Headquarters, 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Enugu, has sentenced a soldier, Private Adamu Mohammed, to death by hanging and another, Private Abubakar Yusuf, to 10 years imprisonment for murder and robbery respectively.

The GCM, which was inaugurated on Feb. 18, 2025, by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Maj.-Gen. Oluyemi Olatoye, tried personnel for various offences that could not be disposed of summarily.

Brig.-Gen. Sadisu Buhari, President of the GCM, while delivering judgment, said Mohammed was found guilty of the murder of his girlfriend, Miss Hauwa Ali, an offence punishable under Section 106 (a) of the Armed Forces Act, Cap A20 LFN 2004.

Buhari said the unanimous decision was reached after a thorough review of the facts, the soldier’s service record, and a plea for leniency by the accused and his counsel.

"In the interest of societal decorum and justice for the deceased, the law had to be applied to its fullest," he said.

Accordingly, Mohammed, with service number 21NA/80/6365, was sentenced to death by hanging.

In a related judgment, the GCM sentenced Private Yusuf to 10 years imprisonment for robbery committed at a mall in Enugu.

The court found Yusuf, with service number 23NA/85/12116, guilty of robbery under Section 107(1)(b) of the Armed Forces Act.

While noting that the plea for mitigation was considered, Buhari said the inability of the GCM to reach the unanimous decision required for the maximum penalty led the panel to sentence Yusuf to 10 years imprisonment under Section 140(3) of the Act.

The president of the GCM noted that the findings and sentences for both soldiers are subject to confirmation by the appropriate confirming authority.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army, through the Acting Deputy Director, 82 Division Army Public Relations, Lt.-Col. Jonah Unuakhulu, reassured the public of its commitment to upholding ethical standards and professional conduct.

He emphasised that the wrongful actions of a few do not reflect the values of the Army, and that decisive measures are always taken to ensure accountability and maintain discipline within its ranks.

This is a serious damage to the reputation of the Nigerian Army. In 2025 we still have military bases being over ran and equipments destroyed or carted away by non state actors with, lesser strength and lesser firepower.
Is it reasonable to say the Nigerian government should take the Egyptian approach towards terrorism whereby the military is prioritized over all other national sectors in terms of finances and the military is invested in heavily regardless of how it affects the other sectors so as to quell this issue of terrorism once and for all.

It's undeniable that funding is important but is it truly all?

Our security planners have not understood the complexity of the security apparatus and are unaware of the consequent commitment to see it through.

When the effort in the NE was winding down there was warning that the evil smoke was blowing westward in the north. As usual, sloth! politick! and here we are with another front on the NW. Conversations on X reveals that the most effective tools in the NE were moved to the NW. Instead of capacity building to reproduce, they just moved things.

I noticed something about Nigerians nowadays, they have been programmed not to see beyond corruption.
Any small things they will start shouting corruption.
This is what leads to the corruption stigma on the country till date nd alot of Nigerian still continues to enforce this dent on the nation.
I think this is a lazy way of thinking, instead of tacking the ineffectiveness of a system, what might have happened, diagnosing the root cause of a problem to proffer a long lasting solution.

But that's the truth, we have corrupt leaders, politicians and even our top military brass are not left behind. The defence sector has received a huge boost in terms of budget allocation over the years, so I wouldn't put the large blame on them. Although we haven't gotten there but he might get there if we continue allocating more into defence and also make sure that this funds are judiciously spent.

Now to the issue of recent failures/set-backs in military operations both in the N.E & N.W is to be large blame on top military leaders and am thinking they're way too comfortable sitting on past military successes. For me have factors some reasons behind recent military failure in Nigeria & Sahara at large.

Extremist Group Resilience/Evolving

Groups like Boko Haram and ISGS have demonstrated the ability to adapt/evolve rapidly and maintain a presence despite military campaigns, causing ongoing instability and casualties. We've seeing BHT using qaudcaptors to shell F.O.B and for surveillance purposes.
The Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) has also used drones for ISR to aid in their attacks. In July 2022, in the town of Gubio, Nigeria, ISWAP used a surveillance drone to survey the location of a Nigerian military convoy before ambushing them. A month later, Islamic State Greater Sahara (ISGS) also carried out a drone-assisted attack on security forces in Mali

Military Corruption and Inefficiency

Reports of corruption within the Nigerian military is not new and its ongoing massively, including allegations of misappropriated funds and a lack of accountability, undermine the effectiveness of counter-terrorism operations.

Coordination Challenges

Efforts to coordinate regional counter-terrorism efforts, including the involvement of international forces, have been hampered by conflicting priorities and a lack of clear communication. The recent conflict shift from the N.E. to N.W. might have a significant impact to this ongoing war in terms of troops re-location wich is not enough due to low turn up in recruitment, same goes to war machines & equipment etc.

Recent Surge in soldiers Morale due wages & Standard of living

I left this at the bottom place because some folks here might not take this factor seriously or important. Recently Sahara Reporters once posted massive resignation in the NA non-commission ranks due to bad wages and standard of living and even basic fighting equipments, This not a news anymore has people from the South-East/South region are not going the N.A anymore and the C.D.S. have been lamenting that the soldiers are under paid.
No fewer than 196 Nigerian soldiers have tendered their resignation letters to Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, citing corruption, low morale, and deteriorating security conditions; "https://businessday.ng/news/article/196-nigerian-soldiers-resign-over-low-morale-official-says-service-voluntary/ "

There more factors like "the NA doctrine" which ought to be restructured to suit current challenges, DISCIPLINE, Air combat support & air interdiction and TRAINING to suit current challenges.
