Early to Early-mid career VoIP Professional by airsaylongcome(op): 11:03am On May 01, 2025
Is there anyone in the early part of a VoIP career here? Someone working with Asterisk/Freeswitch/FreePBX/FusionPBX, Kamailio/openSIPS/Flexisip? Any mobile dev that has worked with Linphone app and/or it's SDK?

I'm looking to grow my network and meet others who are into the field but starting out. It's brutally lonely having to do this here in Naija and I'm looking to meet with, and network with others in this field.

Looking forward to some positive responses from you guys. Make we join body and bounce ideas of each other. Thanks

Developing for android will require NDK which compile some native C++ in android studio . Take a look at this sample in Kotlin

It's sad! Money will chase talent. Any day. I'm honestly looking to working with others so we all can build talent on this niche field. People with actuall zeal or desire. The VoIP space while niche, presents loads of opportunities especially with AI coming. I don tire to dey do solo so looking for others to "rub-my-back-I-rub-your-back". The space is interesting and hope I can meet some folks honestly interested in and possibly already working in the space

The only motivation to create my own VoIP is to create my own services using Webtrc /SIP/RTP for web and C++, koltin for Android and swift for ios the service will be free 2 mins daily with many pricing plan or i use twilio or sinch. Competition is tough in this these space . who is going to pay for server cost and marketing.

VoIP is shifting to AI like call routing , Virtual Assistants, fraud detection, transcription and automation

Do you have any ideas how to pique people's interest in this? Many people just seem to be focused on Web Dev, UI/UX and Programming. Niche fields like this seem to have absolutely no following here. The opportunities available in it are really interesting. Not immediate gains, but it pays of like crazy. In the US, around 31% of the business telephony market is VoIP. We haven't even considered residential users o. That's US alone, we haven't looked at Canada, UK and EU.

For the African Diaspora, there's an even bigger market as many of them tend to call home using VoIP. Many people in big cities assume that all international calls will happen over WhatsApp, but that's not true. Loads and loads of calls to Nigeria from the US happen over VoIP. Let's not even talk about the Remittance/Fintech market that can be tied into it. I just tire. Businesses like Rebtel and Boss Revolution are cleaning out in that space.

VoIP calling enables affordable international calls for personal use, allowing users to connect with others in different countries. This technology provides flexibility and cost savings, making it ideal for staying in touch with friends and family abroad. Global communication is simplified.

Companies use cloud-based VoIP software for virtual numbers, routing or forwarding calls to available numbers for employees, enhancing flexibility and security while maintaining compliance. This solution streamlines communication and protects sensitive information.

The plan can be as low as N2000 to N10k per month depending on the plan and usage. The companies must provide KYC for security purposes. When calling the number there will will be an automated audio call stream about the business and services your company offers before redirection to the available company agents.

Look for your code buddies you know and make agreement them build it . Or you outsource it to Pakistan, Bangladesh or india they seem to be cheaper for hire . Developing apps in nigeria is costly not like before use can use less to develop an app .

Glad to work with you to bring you up to speed. It's a bit confusing and overwhelming at first. But Network engineering means you have the fundamental knowledge. Most of it is layer 1-3 and Layer 7 in OSI. You just need to put your back in it a bit, overcome the initial resistance.

It's mostly networking. It's niche I know but part of the aim is to get readers interested. An L1 VoIP tech with zero experience will be earning around $17.50/hr for a US business. That's for someone with 0 years of experience and just basic idea about it o. A good self starter would be doing around $30/hr within 3 years with self development. And that's not hard stuff doing crazy UI/UX or CSS stuff o. I literally got my first role after watching a 30-part YouTube tutorial. From zero knowledge o. Someone with some networking background and a bit of drive could be starting at around $20/hr. It's just a bit frustrating having almost no one interested in it. I was on a call with an African-American in the space and the first thing he said was "THANK GOD you are black!" Said he's tired of attending VoIP conferences across the world and being almost the only black person in the room. He's almost always only the black speaker at these conferences.

That's for just tech. Devs could be building VoIP apps for mobile/desktop. Linphone already has any interested dev half the way. Add WebRTC using SIP.js or JSSIP and people here could be playing in that space

Is asm a reference to Assembly language? RISC or CISC?

more nigerian are in IT just for money, that's why there's influx of nigerians in tech sectors like front end , web dev , product design
you hardly see any Nigerian or probably just one or two in fields like embedded systems, parallel computing, game dev , operating systems ( nigerians are scarce here)

assembly. there are lots for different machines. used to pay very well in the 90s.
for me it's motorola assembly. kinda simple because of easy mnemonics and lots of resources

They might be using it in closed doors for subsea or land oil detection from satellites to sonar/radar . It could even be used for autonomous control of Oil platform (rigs)to avoid disaster maybe in the future .
Microsoft HoloLen 2 which has AI for engineers can make junior engineers more productive until they become more experienced . AI can detect leakages in pipelines and refinery before it causes harm by utilizing IOT and AI . It take hours for writing reports about engineering tasks with AI 5 mins .

Yes, I have the fundamental knowledge; I previously worked for an ISP and am now with a telecom firm that focuses on satellite technology. I have wanted to get into the voIP space, but I do not know where to start or where to find good material online.

So the gentle route would be to start by learning FreePBX. Crosstalk Solutions on YT has a 30-part tutorial that I got started with. Ultimately you will need to get your hands dirty by learning Asterisk (the underlying tech used in FreePBX) or Freeswitch (an alternate open source VoIP platform like Asterisk). These two dominate the space. But start easy, play around with FreePBX. Get comfortable with it. Then I can point you to more places to look

Clarify when you say VoIP Indeed USA.

It's a small niche field so I don't expect a ton of opportunities like in programming. But saying you saw only 22 job opening is kinda exaggerated.

Let's nor even talk about the several VoIP forums and communities where many people go to hunt for recruits
