True that. Should have been more clearer. I did refer to it as Nigerian Bata tho

Shoes that lasted forever, and for that reason I hated it. If your parents weren't too financially buoyant, once they get these for you, say good bye to new sandals for the rest of your life. Lol.

Rocked these nice strong shoes back then in primary school from Kingsway stores @ Lagos Island. Nostalgic times! Don't know if BATA still exists
There is a Bata store in Lagos but see what hoodlums did to it

Of course its not a yoruba word, just a product that became part of our bodies at the time.
So what's the Yoruba word for shoe?

aaah, DUGBE SHOWROOM for IB. i later moved to AEROSOFT SANDAL and NIKE ACG before bn down with Secondary very EARLY 2000s

i guess its the same i am TALKING about... its bn long i came around, i dont know what name the AREA became or what the company building is like now... there used to be a shop we usually buy NEW DESIGNERS then too, it is owned by saeed omo alhaja, who also owns 411CLUB at bodija, if u are a Secondary school student in early 2000 to 2003 and u no buy there, ur NIKE, TIMBERLAND, ACGs are FAKE.... its just beside the "BATA Company Building" forgotten
I left secondary school around year 2000, though I didn't know Saheed Omo Alhaja but I know there are lot of designer sellers from Queens Cinema all the way to Ekotedo and Dugbe Alawo. They area still there till today as we speak. I think the Bata shop you were talking about is the one around that Lebanon Street at Dugbe Alawo. You are right.

Do you know Bata shoes known as cortina have been our one of the favorite school shoes in the 70s and 80s and early 90s
An inaccurate way to report History.
"Favourite" is not the word to use.

Give people with better minds the work to do it.

Re: Remember The Cortina Shoes Of The Bata Era? by Agwaso: 5:50pm On May 02, 2025
Always good to reflect on these stories from the past.
Just to clarify that Bata was sold to FAMAD in the 90s and FAMAD is actually still operational, though their production activities have significantly reduced over the years. That said, their showroom is still open, and you can still walk in to get your Cortina or other products. In fact, I bought some for my daughters about a year ago.
While it may not be at the scale we remember from the 90s, they’ve managed to stay afloat — which is worth commending especially since FAMAD is fully owned by Nigerians.
