you have to understand that most of the posters here are between 20 and 25 years old.............they are just kids! Most do not know what nigerian pop music history is! What you call afrobeats has its origin in Hi_life and Nigerian popular, funk and disco beats of the 1970s and 1980s............the fusion of reggea,fela's afrobeat genre and hip hop is a more recent thing!

Are our youth should try to research history and understand who and who that formed the basis or foundation of Afrobeats .....its not one person or ethnic group! All groups played a role in developing afrobeats! Afrobeats did not drop from the sky...its a culmination of years of good Nigerian musicians and their works!

Promotion is different from creation.

Akon and late sound sultan may God rest his soul. I remember back then as at year 2004 akon did a lot with African artists like two face faze sound sultan he did collaboration with africa artiste. He didn't create Afrobeat plus he will be so stupid to say that. Afrobeat has been created a longtime ago since the 60s and 70s just that no one new. When u mix oyinbo percussion and Africa drums and instruments u don create Afrobeat. Akon contributed to Rise of Afrobeat. As at then none of the Oyinbo artist gree make music. The likes of Jay Z, Jarule, 50 cents, John legend no free make music with us. Aside Wyclef jean and few of those Artist in Jamaica none was ready to flow with Afrobeat

psquare was already dominating Africa at the time. He may have helped give them international attention but it was still very limited.

He did, but he is exaggerating his impact. "Oliver Twist" by D Banj, "Ojuelegba" by Wizkid, and "If" and "Fall" by Davido really birthed the new wave that Afrobeats has in America. And this was between 2012-2017. Akon wasn't really a part of these songs.

2face was big before these guys with African Queen, but those songs I mentioned made afrobeat mainstream in America.

The Afrobeats popularity on the scale it is is today is a combination of the heavy unknown groundwork of Davido on the streets of USA, proliferation and popularity of streaming and social media platforms and the sheer volume and quality of the sounds themselves...and then signing on to the major US record labels that can push songs and sign you up for shows.

As at 2014, Wizkid and Davido no dey popular for USA. Shebi na song wey dem play for Radio Station or Clubs dem go hear in the first place.

I am not a Davido fan but that buy gifted so many DJ'S and OAP the latest Iphones of that any year to promote songs.


Even the Government directive to radio and tv stations to play local content more than foreign content laid a solid foundation that anything could be built upon.

As at 11 years ago, nobody sabi wizkid and davido beyond African populace for US.

Wizkid started getting buzz in America around when he released Ojuelegba in 2014. But you're right, Davido did a lot of ground work, and it was hus If and Fall songs that started thus new wave of afrobeats in America. I've ran a music blog for 17 years based on American music, so I know exactly when Americans (not nigerians in America) started consuming Nigerian music massively, and definitely started mainstream with Davido.

I was not deep in the scene either but my moving in music circles around 2007-2013 exposed me to a lot. The people who made the afrobeats scene you see today possible are some of the non Nigerian names most people don’t know. They opened Sony’s eyes to investing in Nigerian acts and also took Nigerian acts abroad to sit directly with these labels.

Did she? I think the reason Niniola was embraced in SA was because her music sounded a bit like SA House music...hell for a minute I thought it was a South African producer on the "Maradona" beat.It was not like your average fast paced West African sound we South Africans find hard to jam to.

There was never a time South Africans were the biggest consumers of Afrobeat.Our radio stations won't even play it.You all just making up everything as you go..that's lie number one.

Prior to 2018 Amapiano was not even a thing.It was mostly Deep and Commercial House that we were listening to in SA so how was Niniola infusing with a sound not even popular yet in SA?..another lie debunked.
