There's been a trending conversation lately and it's stirring up some serious thoughts: "Be nice to your children's teachers because they know your secrets!"

At first, it sounds like an exaggeration—until you think about it. Many parents are beginning to realize that their children, especially in their early "talkative" phase, often spill family gist without filters. Whether it's dad snoring like a generator, mummy shouting like a Nollywood actress, or the exact words you used during that last fight, children don’t hold back!

In fact, some Nigerian parents already jokingly call it "cho cho cho phase"—that time when your child talks non-stop and everything at home becomes public knowledge, courtesy of innocent storytelling in school.

Class teachers, being close to the kids, hear a lot. And sometimes, you as a parent might not even be aware of what your child has said until a teacher brings it up subtly—or you hear it from someone else.


So, let's talk:

Do your children's teachers actually know your secrets—because of your kids?

Who cares? If dem know na problem for them. Some times it's better to not no shit. How would you feel knowing from your student that his dad cut off fingers of some guy that he believes was a snitch just a day before.

There are some lines you don't cross in international schools...

There are discussions u dont have with pupils, there are questions or favours you don't ask from them or their parents

Yes, we do! These kids trust us and open up to us on literally everything. However, we do not withhold these information. We literally just listen out of respect and courtesy to our little minds, advise them because they open up to us so they can get closure and afterwards, we discard these information. If it is a sensitive one (such as parents kissing) we find a way to let the parents on that so they can thread with caution.

You make me laugh. Spent several years in the best American and British schools in Nigeria. They spill alot even at 6th form stage. Alot sef

This is very accurate. I remember when I was hustling as a school teacher, children in a primary class were one day gisting among themselves and mimicking the ringtones of their parents in the other room. I particularly remember a boy mimicking either the dad's or mum's tone that sounds like that of a goat. I was shocked!

Children know a lot and talk a lot about activities that goes on in the home.

My son's teacher got to know our names through my son. He was singing it like a song to them. One day I went to pick him from school, the class teacher jokingly was singing it like a song, " my father's name is Chijioke; my mother's name is Sandra" (not our real names). Even some his classmates were calling me by my name.

The two secrets that my children's teachers know about us are our real names and religion. Every other thing, they don't know.

I and my wife are very adept at keeping our kids away from our personal businesses...

Unless you're molesting your kid (or doing any other stuff you wouldn't do to fellow adults to them) you have nothing to fear from someone learning your 'secrets'

The teachers are parents themselves and the ones who aren't are learning how (not) to parent via third party i.e. through whatever your kids tell them per home life

I am yet to have kids

Probably in the next two years

Who cares... Na the teacher load be that..
