I totally agree with the assumption.

However, some people might find it difficult to believe but the reality is that if you're in corporate world and know one or two things happening behind the scene in Nigeria, you will definitely agree no less.

I don’t agree with this generalization. Yes, there are issues, but painting the entire nation as corrupt is unfair. There are still many honest and hardworking Nigerians out there.
80% isn't entire. It might even be worse than that. In just 2 weeks I've dealt with about 7 dishonest persons(artisans and neighbors).

And I'm not the type who has daily interactions with people. Imagine if that were the case.

My principle now is to assume that whoever I'm to financial dealing with in Nigeria is dishonest until proven otherwise.

Then let's go to jail . We must clean this country.

Thank you. I believe those generalisation are a reflection of the person's circle of companions. Which isn't a reflection of the country, but such person's value system.
If you say it's subject to the person's circle. What do you have to say about Nigeria's civil service?

Because these are people we deal with almost everyday.

If you think people who live in Lekki are much different in value systems when compared to those in Ajegunle, just do an experiment. Drive your Lexus to a mall at any of these places and place your iPhone 16 on the car. Leave it for 20 mins and come back to check if you'd still find it.

You are good person sir to consider helping him back in returns. But sir you see most Nigerian once the see you as been honest and gentle under them they capitalize on that and take advantage of you. No matter how honest you are to some people, they pay you back with nothing. That is why many has derail from been honest
I understand but it's still not an excuse.
God works in mysterious ways.
Your help may not come from the person you think you're are being honest with but someone whom your story is being explained to or someone watching from afar.
Most times not even from siblings. Honesty is one thing that always pays 💯.
It creates unbroken bond & avenue for referrals.
It pays even when the honest person is no more, because the virtues and rights get transfered to his or her kids or relatives by correspondence.

The entire civil service in the country is less than 3% of the country's population. Yet, it is not everyone in the civil service that is evil.

Birds of a feather flock together. A thief in Abuja might know a thief in Lagos. They are in the same circle even if they operate in different bases. And in all of the nonsense they do, they do not bring it close to disciplined persons.

The truth is a lot of Nigerians are into shady deals to survive the harsh economy caused by the government. If the system is revamped watch and see how many crimes will stop, for instance if policemen are paid well enough they will stop receiving bribes, same with all parastatals. The more fairer the system is, the fairer the citizens. This is just the reality
This is more like it. If the government wants to stop cybercrime, there has to be some form of industrialization with enough jobs and commensurate renumeration according to level of expertise.

The government afterwards can set up an independent enforcement system to go after people committing financial crimes.

The excuse people give for committing financial crimes in Nigeria is that there are no jobs.

One would be wrong if they said all the people in the civil service are corrupt. They'd be right if they said majority of the people in the civil service are corrupt.

You don't have to deal with everyone one in the civil service to come to that conclusion. That's what people refer to as sampling in statistics.

So a Ugandan naturilizes and decides to get the Nigerian passport. He goes on the immigration website, fills all the necessary form and is awaiting capturing.

He waits for 6 months, no invitation. He goes to the immigration office and asked y he hasn't been called for capturing after filling thr online form. The response was that it takes time.

Someone kind enough informed the Ugandan that he'd have to do all the process and payment at the immigration office, else he'd be wasting his time.

He goes to the immigration office again. He met with the first immigration officer who told him that the passport would cost him 100 thousand naira, while the website stated 45,000 naira. The man is upset, and he says it's extortion.

He leaves the first officer and goes to the second, same response. This happened until the 10th instance where an officer was willing to help the Ugandan get the passport at the official rate.

What do you think the Ugandan will deduce from this experience?

The truth is that our value system in this country is poor, whether you live in Lekki or Makoko, it just manifest in different forms.

Another prIme example is the airport experience. I don't need to paint that to you.

No doubt that a significant population of Nigerians are corrupt, but who did this analysis to come up with 80%.

The secondary school I attended, we wrote WAEC with our heads, I never for once paid for sorting while in the Uni. So they should speak for themselves. We still have a significant population of honest Nigerians. This writer should better start asking questions.

Are there no corrupt people in the west? Did that stop the government from doing their duties?. Today everyone wants to japa to countries where the system works. The government should wake up and this writer should stop giving excuses for the wickedness and incompetence of our ruling class

Yes the people are corrupt, should that be room for excuses as to why the ruling class should be corrupt too.

They said to whom much is given much is expected. Let the sanitation begin from the top then it will be easier to fight it at the bottom.

I rest my case.

Truth, but still, government need to be blamed because they control everything that can make the system change while they prevent the offenders from being purnish of those offences they committed.

The job of a leader is to create an environment that is void of all those your accusation, imagine if our leader are truthful in fighting corruption and they start from them (politician), giving life imprisonment or by hanging for embezzlement, I can assure you that the masses will adjust,..but our leader see theirself as saint and go after the Petty thief when the big thief are celebrated..so pathetic

The headline didn't say majority are corrupt, it said 80% of Nigerians would go to jail. People have this perchant for throwing numbers about and that's where I draw the line. I'm a Math person, so I think you can understand.

To be realistic, how many of the daily Nigerian offences guarantees jail time, going by the constitution? That's a great place to start.

..abi.. when the government put Nigerians in poverty, hunger hardship, inflation, high costs of living, high rate of unemployment... and make the economy and country to be bad due to their bad governance and corruption.. what do they expect ?... it will then lead many Nigerians to be desperate for money inorder to survive the hard economy and country., to survive the abject poverty, hunger, hardship, inflation, high costs of living.. survival of the fittest ..so when the head is rotten the body is also rotten..but when the head is well the body is well..it all starts from the head.. simple

Blame past military rulers and all politicians before military rule and after military rule, including this current ones.

Those idiots changed the mindset of the people with corruption and evil policies that made everyone eyes to be opened and over ambitious which can never be eradicated till the end of the world.

It's just a pity that Nigerians will never change and the country will never get better.
