Tremendous work, OP! I've learned quite a lot from this invaluable thread. Here are my questions: 1. What do you feed your newly hatched local chicks? (I have 10 eggs in incubation.) 2. What can I feed my local chicken for faster growth? 3. How do you handle your local roosters when they become mature: do you sell them off, or do you leave them to inbreed with their siblings? (I currently have three young roosters and a young hen, all siblings from the same mother.) Keep up the good work! |

Reverseng:Just imagine 3000 layers crying out for afternoon food but then you are broke! Or imagine one nasty turkey laughing in one room when you are selling out your broilers and then just say *"these customers don't even know the quantity of drugs oga dey give these broilers!"* |

Rwshd:1. I feed the new chicks commercial chicks starter crumble. One kilo is like 1,200 naira. They eat it for a couple of weeks, even as they also move around with their mom and eat insects. 2. I feed my local chickens commercial grower and finisher feed meant for my agric chickens. Not so much of it, but I feed them that every day, with the normal oka baba (guinea corn) I feed them. It helps them grow fast, and keeps their feathers fresh. My chickens always look like ajebutter compared to the other local chickens I see outside. lol. 3. I discussed this with my mom. We gave away one 3 months old rooster a few weeks ago, and we're going to give out two more soon. We give to the kids that help my mom when i'm not around. We also plan on selling some roosters soon (when they start approaching maturity). It's best to sell off roosters, and if possible, get a new one after a while, to reduce the case of inbreeding. |

kay29000:Thank you very much for your enlightening replies, OP!🐓👍🏼❤️ No vex abeg, is it cheaper to get ready-made feed or to improvise? If I have to improvise, what combination of nutrient sources would you advise? (I would appreciate responses from other members, too! ) |

Rwshd:My honest opinion, I've never been a fan of making my own feed. I always felt it would make more sense if I had hundreds of chickens, not when I have just a few tens of chickens, cos if you don't get them enough nutrients with the feed you want to mix yourself, then it would just be a waste of time. Anyway, that's just me, and I might be wrong. |

Kudos to the Op of this thread. I always come here to unwind every now n den as I'm a fan of agriculture... I rare layers myself... Commercially... Not too big but I'm making my money.. For guys wit little funds... Instead of doing CBEX n d likes, farming just cuts it... Just do Ur feasibility study. I promise you, U can't regret it. Well, aside my layers, one of my neighbours hens laid n hatched its eggs in my compound a while ago. Long story short, they r now fully grown chickens and 2 of the 5 chicks decided to stay back wit me... All I did was get two make noilers. I saw a friend trying to cross breed and the result was wonderful. Guys, agriculture is d deal after tech |

There is an orange colored stuff that is rubbed on baby chicks to protect them from hawks.does it really work? |
| Re: My One Year Journey Raising Local Chickens by Ameboperoo(m): 2:49pm On Apr 22, 2025 |
50JBL:I don't know if it really works. Just ask from the people selling these local agbo ingredients. It's camwood but may have different name in your area. It is called osun in Yoruba. You can also use die or food colouring. It's just a format to confuse the hawks but it has cast. Some hawks will still pick them up and eat them with the colouring ![]() |
