If you're someone like me that works from home, you will agree that cooking in your house is more expensive as you will eat more.

But if you are 9-5, eating out is cheaper.

I fit cook 5cups of rice now, before evening I don finish am, come dey fine food to chop again.
What's the essence of making money, when you economize when it comes to feeding. Or are you making money for someone else?

Cooking for your self is the best especially if you can cook soup 🍲
Re: Cooking Alone Vs Eating Out, Which Is More Expensive? by Columbine(m): 12:15pm On May 09, 2025
As a Bachelor living alone. Right from my school days I have always cooked my own food.

Eating outside is a little cheaper when you just eat to suppress hunger. As a voracious eater that I am, I can eat more than thrice a day as I cook my food, I know the ingredients I use, I know the quality of the food I eat. There's little room for food poisoning, associated with using expired products, unclean water.

If you want to eat healthy, cook your foods.

I prefer cooking at home, though there are times circumstances warrants one to eat out. In my area there's a lady that sells swallow for 700 for a plate and it's a good deal for me.

For instance, I have been craving for quality moimoi for months now but if I decide to prepare, I will spend close to 6k. I can't buy and eat cos the last time I did I almost purged my intestines.

But you are not assured if you are eating a healthier food outside

I totally agree with you. I live alone. Whenever I want to cook, I spend nothing less than 5k. But if I eat out, it's never more than 3k. I did the math and realized that I am better off eating out than cooking food for myself.

I disagree.. I spent 2900 here for this meal and it lasted me till the next day.

I cannot use 2900 to eat out thrice in this port Harcourt..

I live alone and eat out all the time. Haven’t cooked in over a year. I used to think it was cheaper, but when I checked how much I spend on food monthly, eating out turned out way more expensive. The only good thing is you get freshly cooked meals.
Go and get a small deep freezer. Your meal will always be fresh, and you won't be looking for bannies to be cooking for you from time to time.

From my experience, if you stay alone, eating out is cheaper. If you doubt it, calculate the actual cost of preparing a meal, check how many times you will eat that meal and then compare how much it will cost you to buy that number of plates of the same quality of meal outside.

Further more, consider the time and labor cost.
You go to the market to buy food stuff
Prepare to cook
Do the cooking.
Be cleaning while cooking.
Go out to a nearby shop to buy something you forgot to buy in the market.
Finish cooking.
Wash the dishes after eating.

All these after buying food stuff with your money o
Meanwhile if you go to a restaurant, all you do is eat and leave.

So gents, eating out is way cheaper.
If you will factor in health, safety and environment, then preparing one's meal would definitely be cheaper.

Do you eat once a day?
I bet that 5k you MAY eat at most 2 but that 3k should be for 1 meal, do you go for another 3k in the evening?

U have to caution yourself
Imagine if ur kids have to keep cooking cos u have a bag of rice and all other food stuff in the house
You need to discipline urselves
Its very important
I agree with you bro, I think I lack discipline even when it comes to spending money.

I'm working on that anyways.

As a bachelor, if there is a good storage facility and constant electricity, cooking in the house is the best, it saves a lot.
Am a Chef so I understand how this things work
You will be satisfied
Your health will never be at risk
You eat what your you desire
Your meal is coming from a good hygienic sorrounding.

If U come across where all this road-side restaurant make the food u eat, hmmmm, U go cry for your health, combination of different Maggi to make one food.

Be specific about "eating out", a road side bukka cannot be compared to a fine dinning restaurant that charges an average of 75k per mean and a bottle water for 5k, do the maths, that is two weeks worth foodstuff for a single dinner.

No matter how you paint it, cooking at home is not only cheaper, it is also more satisfying, hygienic and the best overall!

If I dey eat out I spend 5-6k daily, on average, breakfast -rice and beans with stew with meat 1500, lunch-indomie and egg 1800, dinner-swallow and soup 1800, .. Cooking at home is actually much cheaper assuming I cooked , I go spend on average 60k-80k monthly. Imagine 5k × 30 days =150k-80k=70k, I would have saved 70k if I cooked my own meal.. though it depends on work wey u dey, some hustle no give ever give you chance to dey cook for house, as for me now something I dey eat outside, but most times I dey cook my own meal..

So if you spend 5k to cook at home, you finish the food at a go? I am not understanding this..

Because I know whenever I eat out, I spend nothing less than 3500 to 4k eating Amala and ogunfe but whenever I have someone come cook for me, I spend at least 6-10k to get the dishes ready and it takes me nothing less than 3-5 days before I finish it.try to do the calculation again boss. Yes, u still have soup, but remember u will get what u will use to eat the soup like rice or swallow. U will also use gas to cook it.

So tell me how...

Totally disagreeing with you!
If you cook once in a day, it will serve you throughout the day and if you keep foods refrigerated or warm, it will cover some rations of the next day, selah

Eating out is only good in the days food items were cheap.

But since the days of Buhari and Tinubu, eating out became expensive and those who cook their food themselves survive economically.
