Photos of the newly elected Pope Leo XIV during a past visit to Nigeria have resurfaced on social media, sparking interest and pride among many Nigerian Catholics. The images show the pontiff—formerly known as Cardinal Robert Prevost—posing with Augustinian brothers during what is believed to be a visit to the country during his tenure as Prior General of the Order of Saint Augustine (2001–2013).

While the exact date of the visit remains unconfirmed, the backdrop and context suggest the photo was taken at one of the Augustinian establishments in Nigeria. The Order of Saint Augustine has maintained a strong presence in the country since the mid-20th century, notably through institutions such as St. Augustine’s Major Seminary in Jos.

Pope Leo XIV’s deep roots in the Augustinian Order and his global outreach during his time as Prior General are now gaining renewed attention following his election. Many Nigerian faithful have expressed joy over his past connection to the country, seeing it as a hopeful sign for the Church in Africa.

The resurfaced photos are being widely shared online, with several commenters noting the symbolic significance of a pope who has previously walked Nigerian soil.
Was he among those Tinubu recruited during Presidential Election Campgaign?

I consider Pope John Paul II the most popular Pope. Probably because he was the Pope I knew while growing up. We were told he would be the last religious Pope and any Pope after him will be anti-christ. My family's house still have a framed picture of him hanging in the living room.

No one remembers the late pope anymore. Memories of him have already faded in no time.

One thing I've learned in life is that no one is irreplaceable. Tears only last for a while because Change is the only constant thing in life. As long as you're breathing, endeavor to make a lasting impact as you voyage through time.
No matter how it goes down, life goes on.
