ASUU Elects Prof. Chris Piwuna As New President by ogododo(op): 7:52am On May 12, 2025
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has elected a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital, Prof. Chris Piwuna, as its next president.

Piwuna, who is also the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, takes over from Victor Osodeke, a Professor of Soil Science from the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

The decision was taken at the 23rd National Delegates Congress of the Union, which took place in Benin on Sunday.

The election was contested between Piwuna and Prof. Adamu Babayo from the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, according to verified sources familiar with the development.

Piwuna’s assumption of office comes amidst widespread speculations of industrial action following issues surrounding the sharing formula of the Earned Academic Allowances recently released by the Federal Government of Nigeria, brain drain, among others.

So ASUU can do without going on strike for the past 2yrs and not even threaten govt on going on strike.. this is the greatest achievement of Tinubu .. those years your course learnt must be 4+X or 5+X for a 4 year course and 5 year course respectively, what an interesting time ..

So the other guy that led ASUU into 8 months of terrible no work; no pay experience has finally quit the stage?

I thank God for General Buhari.

He is the only who was tough enough to call ASUU's bluff.

That's why till this day, ASUU has not said nothing about going to strike!

I hope he is better than that Osodeke who talks like a lab technician not a professor.

ASUU elections seem to be devoid of drama/rigging/civil war. That's very much unlike the elections of Nigeria, Nigeria Bar Association and National Union of Road Transport Workers.

IF anyone is to take the credit for this, it has to be Ngige.

Government as employer said we want to use this platform to be paying majority of our staff including ASUU, ASUU as employee say no we will determine what you should use to pay us, if you do not agree we will go on strike.

While on strike, you have to still pay us. Ngige called their bluff and insisted that they are free to go on strike but for any month you do not work, no payment for that month.
