It wasn't increased, what you only did was to convert it from dollars to naira. Due to naira devaluation, it would increase in naira terms but the loans were obtained in dollars and will be repaid in dollars not naira. This naira conversation is the propaganda wailers are pushing but unfortunately, it only makes them slow upstairs.
Is that because ebilokan has failed to crash the dollar rate to N300/$1 promised for the short term, two years after hitting the ground running aimlessly?

This is in addition to the increase in foreign loans since ebilokan got his turn to continue APC shege.

Nigeria’s total public debt rose to N142.3 trillion as of September 30, 2024, representing an increase of 5.97% (N8.02 trillion) compared to N134.3 trillion in June 2024.

This is according to the latest data released by the Debt Management Office (DMO) on Tuesday.

Nairametrics observed that this increase reflects the combined effects of rising domestic borrowing and the impact of exchange rate depreciation on external debt when converted to naira terms.

External debt surge driven by currency depreciation
Data from the DMO showed that Nigeria’s external debt in dollar terms grew marginally by 0.29%, from $42.90 billion in June to $43.03 billion in September.

World Bank offers Nigeria forex rate advice, as Tinubu eyes N200/Dollar rate

April 23, 2023

The President-elect said he would work with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to *bring down the exchange rate to N200 in his first term.*

“My administration will collaborate with the Central Bank to harmonize the fiscal and monetary policy to achieve immediate stabilization of the value of the naira against the US dollars and other currencies and in the short term, strengthen the naira by boosting the supply of foreign currency and moderating demand.

“The short-term goal is to achieve a naira/dollar rate of 300 naira/US$ and gradually achieve a less than 200 naira rate over the next four years, Tinubu stated.

I like this comment.

It's normal to hate your leaders but it's kolomental to hate your country to the extent of wishing it evils, evils and evils all the time.

To the extent that you don't like to hear any good news about it haba!

To the extent of wishing it collapse all bcoz your party or preferred candidate is not in power.

I won't even stop my enemy from becoming Nigerian president. I will wholeheartedly support his government as long as he's doing well.

How much is cleared vs how much is being borrowed? Can we make a comparison? The ones being cleared are obligatory. FG doesn't have a choice. Nigeria doesn't default. Tinubu borrowed money to clear debt and also borrowed more to embezzle

interesting take. we need to know if the government borrowed or took more loans

it will be utterly ridiculous if they took another loan to pay off this loan because we will only be digging ourselves deeper into the economic pit of despair

If OBJ had $12billion, why was he begging for debt forgiveness?. Why couldn't he pay it and then pay the rest later without begging?. And the $40 billion reserves he left, how much did GEJ left behind?, they stole it and shared it before they left power.
Exactly.

What is the point in mentioning Obasanjo’s achievements when Jonathan and Diezani entered and scattered everything with their looting?

Current SDR Obligations by Nigeria to IMF.

Despite settling the principal, Nigeria continues to have financial obligations to the IMF:
• Outstanding Purchases and Loans: Approximately SDR 1.53 billion, representing 62.5% of Nigeria’s IMF quota.
• Projected Payments:
• 2024: Principal of SDR 613.63 million and charges/interest ranging from SDR 32.34 million to SDR 78.69 million.
• 2025: Principal of SDR 613.63 million and interest charges of SDR 36.95 million.
• Annual SDR Charges: Approximately $30 million, continuing post-repayment.

Say the whole truth, dont minimize it.
If I ask you to explain what SDR means you will bite your tongue. Rest and stop misleading yourself. The misguided report you are desperately clutching onto rightly points out that there are interest payments aside from the principal. These payments were scheduled to be paid until 2029. Nigeria has simply paid earlier. The writer of that report is looking at a loan schedule and assuming that since the interest is scheduled to be paid until 2029, then it cannot have been paid in 2025.

That shows you the level of thinking intelligent people have to contend with in this Nigeria. Such a burden!

The journey towards clearing this debt began in earnest in 2023, when the nation’s IMF debt stood at $1.61 billion. Through disciplined fiscal reforms, the debt steadily declined, reaching $472 million by January 2025, before being fully repaid by May of the same year.

First of all, the Senate had approved the securitization of the loans, while the FG implemented it subsequently. When a loan is securitized, it is converted into securities that investors can buy into, like a securitized bonds FG issued. Like in a typical investment environment where companies and Governments all over the world usually do..
