How I wish some of the Elites and state actors really want the manufacturing industries to work effectively in this Nation.

Why are our raw mineral resources being exported outside our offshore? After been refined to finish goods. It is imported to the Nation for consumptions. Some are substandard which have negative effects on the citizens.

What are the acclaimed research institution and others in the country doing with their yearly budgets

Most Nigerians are mumu
This msg right here is better than Maggie as it's pure msg no added sugar or soya
Go and look at Maggie
U will see salt sugar ,what is sugar doing inside Maggi
Also Maggi has msg inside it
We are all eating msg one way or the other
It was created by Japanese scientists
It's an umami flavor
Meaning it's derived from nature.
It's the Americans in the early 90s that gave msg a bad reputation because it was competing with them in their restaurants
Instead of throwing stupid insults on Nigerians, you should have focused on the chemical agent, MSG, and tell people if it's safe for consumption or not, and in what recommended quantity.

This is what this thread seeks to reveal. Is MSG safe as a food ingredient? If so, what is the recommended quantity?
The focus is on the primary constituent, MSG, not on the brand name like maggi.

My system does not care. As long as it's not poison, not too hot (either from pepper or heat), and it tastes good, my palate will accept and send inside my system....

At least, whether na white maggi or brown maggi, they all have the same destination.... The bowels wink

Absolutely, the seasoning cubes they call 'Maggi' and their type are 90% salt.

Those cubes are far more harmful than MSG.

What is MSG?

MSG is the sodium salt of glutamic acid, a naturally occurring amino acid found in foods like tomatoes, cheese, and mushrooms. It enhances umami—the fifth basic taste (savory/meaty).

---

Benefits of MSG

1. Flavor enhancer: It boosts taste, making bland food delicious without needing much salt or fat.

2. Sodium reduction tool: MSG contains about one-third the sodium of regular table salt. Using it can help cut overall salt intake without sacrificing flavor.

3. Appetite stimulation (in the right context): For elderly or ill individuals with diminished appetite, MSG can improve food palatability and intake.

---

Is MSG Detrimental?

Scientifically? Not really.

The FDA and major health bodies (like the WHO and EFSA) recognize MSG as safe.

The so-called “Chinese Restaurant Syndrome”—headaches, flushing, etc.—was linked anecdotally to MSG in the 1960s. But rigorous studies haven't confirmed a consistent effect, except possibly in very sensitive individuals and at very high doses.

---

When MSG Can Be a Problem

1. Overuse: Like any additive, overdoing it can desensitize taste and mask poor cooking practices.

2. Personal Sensitivity: A tiny fraction of people report symptoms like headaches or sweating. Rare, but valid.

3. Hidden in processed foods: It can sneak into highly processed junk, contributing to overall poor dietary habits—not because MSG itself is evil, but because of the company it keeps.

---

My Take?

MSG is not a villain—it’s a culinary tool. When used moderately in home-cooked meals, especially to reduce salt or enhance umami in low-fat dishes, it’s perfectly safe and even beneficial. The key is moderation and context.

That's what the Yoruba women use to sweeten the stew.

White Maggie is from sugarcane?
Saviola86:
You're all uniform.

Ajino Moto is very healthy and good to go. Infact this stuff is what most Asian households use till today.

Having worked briefly with the company in 2013 and also have siblings working in the company since 2007 till date I have good knowledge of the usage of that product because I use it from AJINO Moto to Madish to Deli dawa etc.

Do you know that even the celebrated seasoning brands you use everyday (I don't want to mention names) buy AJINO MOTO and add extra Seasoning to change the colour? E shock you abi?

A seasoning you say is bad why do you think they are still in business and growing strong? It is because all other seasoning companies in Nigeria buy their products and use it to produce their own by tweaking it a bit so leave matter for Mathias

Ajino Moto is even safer than most of the ones you use for your cooking because it is in its almost natural form made from sugar cane but when others buy from them, dey add more sodium and blood pressure causing ingredients and you celebrate them and leave the real deal

All bouillon (seasoning) cubes contain MSG as their active ingredient.

So long as its not crayfish, it contains MSG.

Deal with it.

From what I'm seeing, there's nothing wrong with using it. I strongly believe the poster who claimed white people demonized it because it favoured the Asian economy. Nothing new there. We've seen Caucasians do that time without end.

Interestingly, MSG is present in ALL your seasoning cubes and powders....the joke is on you if you think you don't eat it daily!!

The Canceringenious components of this seasoning will multiply the volume of free radicals a person's system.

It also used as a bleaching substitute for garments to show it's active chemical components.

Better advised to use natural seasoning like locust beans, crayfish etc.

There is NOTHING wrong with cooking with MSG!

In fact, the bad PR of MSG is due to wrong research that went viral back in the days.

The conclusions reached by the research was never repeated. but the damage has been done!

All those claiming they react badly to it, it just shows the power of suggestion!!!

In fact, many of the processed food you buy have added MSG an most have never complained of any reaction!

In fact, if you have eaten KFC or chicken in any fast-food restaurant, you have likely consumed MSG without knowing!
