Production Logix leading the charge in South African aerospace and defence electronics manufacturing

KwaZulu-Natal based Production Logix is a prominent player in the electronics manufacturing sector in South Africa, with its products driving key elements of the aerospace and defence sectors as well as mining, security, and transportation.

As the company boldly states, in an era where precision, reliability, and rapid innovation are non-negotiable, electronics play a critical role in powering the backbone of modern defence and aerospace systems. From advanced avionics to mission-critical communications and control systems, the ability to deliver high-performance, custom-built electronics at scale is what enables today’s military and aerospace platforms to operate with confidence in the most demanding environments.

Production Logix specialises in PCB (printed circuit board) assembly, through-hole electronic circuit assembly, and ruggedised wire harnessing. Other services include prototyping, surface mount assembly (SMA), potting, and coaxial manufacturing.

Backed by more than 30 years’ experience in the electronics environment, Production Logix’s manufacturing facility, comprising five assembly lines, can turn out up to 300 000 components per hour. This is to satisfy the insatiable demand for its product solutions across a wide field.

Many leading South African aerospace and defence companies make use of Prologix, including radar, countermeasures, antennas, satellite and communications manufacturers. Prologix has seen considerable growth since the company was acquired by current management in 2016, going from a handful of key customers to over 30 core customers, with nearly half of business coming from the aerospace/defence sector. Although all Prologix customers are local, the company is able to export as required – it has Directorate Conventional Arms Control (DCAC) certification for defence contracts.

Although Prologix experienced a slump during the Covid-19 pandemic along with the rest of the industry, it has seen a major recovery, largely due to an increase in global military spending. Technology enhancement in the aerospace industry has also filtered down to benefit the company.

Production Logix does a lot of work for the defence industry, but is not reliant on defence business and also operates in the mining and automotive segments, including telematics (monitoring cars, trucks, equipment and other assets using GPS technology and on-board diagnostics). Vehicle tracking companies have been keeping Prologix busy with tracking system looms. Components for water metres, and cabling and looms for inverters, batteries, and cell phone towers are also regularly manufactured by the company.

Focus on quality

Mehta noted that the defence industry requires high quality standards, and this ensure high quality is maintained across the whole business. “We have a reputation in the market for a very high standard of quality that helps us with our commercial customers, especially those who have been burnt with poor quality before. With us we try and get the product right the first time.”

The company’s absolute focus on quality is non-negotiable, Mehta emphasised. Production Logix has ISO 9001-2015 certification and is compliant with AS9100 Military and Space accreditation, the globally recognized Quality Management System for the aerospace industry. “This certification reflects our dedication to meeting the stringent requirements of aerospace and defence clients, while also ensuring reliability across other sectors,” Mehta said.

“AS9100 certification isn’t just a badge—it’s a reflection of our rigorous quality commitment. Whether our products are destined for a military aircraft or a commercial project, we maintain the highest standards of performance and safety.”

In addition to AS9100, Production Logix operates according to IPC Class 3 standards, which set the highest level of performance criteria for electronic assemblies. This level of compliance is critical for products used in challenging environments, where failure is not an option. “With IPC Class 3, we’re able to meet the highest industry standards and deliver dependable results, no matter the application,” Mehta added.

Niger's loss, Ghana's gain.

US hands over Puma armoured vehicles to Ghana

The United States has handed over 14 Puma M36 armoured vehicles to the Ghana Armed Forces. They are part of a batch originally destined for Niger, but were instead sent to other African nations.

An official handover ceremony was held on Thursday 8 May at the 153 Armoured Regiment, Abuga Square in Burma Camp, with US Ambassador to Ghana Virginia Palmer transferring the vehicles on behalf of the US government.

In her speech, she underscored the importance of safeguarding Ghana’s northern border, given the evolving security challenges in the region. She reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Ghana in enhancing its defence capabilities through sustained partnerships, capacity-building initiatives and the provision of critical resources.

Speaking at the event, Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah, expressed gratitude to the United States Government for the support in promoting regional and global peace. He reiterated Ghana’s commitment to maintain the donated vehicles.

Ahead of the handover, a group of 40 personnel from the Ghana Army’s 15 Armoured Brigade and the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Corps successfully completed a four-week orientation training focused on the operation and maintenance of the newly acquired vehicles.

The course concluded on Friday 2 May after being held at the headquarters of the 153 Armoured Regiment. It was facilitated by Virginia-based defence contractor AMENTUM and coordinated through the Office of Security Cooperation at the US Embassy in Ghana.

The training curriculum included both theoretical and practical sessions covering vehicle identification, interior and exterior component familiarisation, operational instructions, safety procedures, turret and gun port handling, and field driving across various terrains such as sand, mud, and rocky inclines. Participants also underwent practical lessons on how to service and maintain the Puma M36.

Thirty-eight Puma M36 vehicles were originally destined for Niger, but after Niger ended military cooperation with the United States and American forces withdrew from that country, these were sent to Benin, Ghana, and Cote d’Ivoire.

On 27 November 2024, the United States officially transferred a dozen of the Pumas to Benin’s military, and a dozen to Cote d’Ivoire’s military on 10 April this year.

The vehicles are Puma M36 Mk 6 versions built by United Manufacturing Technologies (OTT-USA). As the vehicles are donated by the United States, they are required to have majority US content.

OTT-USA was established in 2016 and has proven performance of supplying B7 level armoured vehicles to the US Government for use by partner nations in hostile environments like Somalia. OTT-USA’s flagship vehicle is the Puma M36, which has had its ballistic and blast ratings certified by, among others, the US Army’s Test & Evaluation Command.

“OTT-USA enjoys reach-back support from its sister facilities in Pretoria, South Africa. Together, they are capable of engineering, design, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, servicing, and refurbishment of a range of armoured mobility solutions for military, law enforcement, and other specialty applications like cash-in-transit,” the company’s website states.

OTT has delivered some 600 Puma vehicles to more than a dozen customers across Africa, including peacekeeping contributors – over 200 vehicles were used by the African Union Mission in Somalia between 2012 and 2022 for example, while more than 250 vehicles were used by United Nations missions in Mali between 2014 and 2022.

Since 2019, more than 70 armoured vehicles have been built at OTT’s partner facility in the United States – the order for 38 Pumas from the US government was received in 2023.

The Puma M36 family of vehicles is available with various drive trains, suspensions and options, ranging from Ashok Leyland to Cummins and other transmission options.

When did ICP become a Jewish company? Flip Marx, the former Special Forces colonel who founded the company, and Frans Toerien, former parabat and retired commanding officer of 101 Air Supply Battalion, are not Jewish. I know a stake was sold in the company recently, to fund expansion. Did a majority shareholding change hands?

I suppose the Houthis have been cannibalising some of the 172 Revas to keep some running, cos no spares have been shipped from SA since they took over.
Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by Lurker4Long:
GreenandGold, from January 2025:

ICP marks 20 year anniversary with new vehicles and strategic expansion

With 20 years of experience under the company’s belt, ICP (Integrated Convoy Protection) has been modernising and expanding its fleet, recently launching several new military and security vehicles.
CEO Nadine Rynners said ICP has experienced a significant resurgence, as highlighted by the multiple new vehicles it has developed after substantial investment.

The armoured vehicle specialist’s updated range includes:

A new 6×6 Armoured Utility Vehicle;

A new 4×4 Armoured Utility Vehicle;

A new 4×4 Armoured Personnel Carrier;

A range of Cash-in-Transit Vehicles.

The Armoured Utility Vehicles are mine-protected logistical vehicles equipped with integrated ISO container locks, enabling the transport of standard ISO shipping containers in hostile environments. ICP said these vehicles offer high mobility and share common spare parts with the REVA armoured personnel carrier (APC) range, enhancing logistical support.

Additionally, the Armoured Utility Vehicles can be fitted with specialised modules, such as a containerised ambulance or a light recovery crane. They appear to be entering service in the Middle East as the Kasser II (4×4) and Kasser III (6×6). According to Asian Military Review, the Kasser II was unveiled in the Middle East by M4 Industries at IDEX 2021 and is currently in service with the UAE military.

Asian Military Review further added that the Kasser II is the Emirati version of the 4×4 REVA V APC, but featuring a revised grille, two-piece windscreen and other cosmetic changes. It has been fitted with the Raad I remotely operated weapon station that the UAE has acquired from Spain’s Escribano.
ICP could not comment on its clients due to non-disclosure agreements but said it only manufactures vehicles in South Africa. According to National Conventional Arms Control Committee (NCACC) annual reports, South Africa exported 42 Reva armoured vehicles to the UAE between 2019 and 2023, but NCACC reports do not specify vehicle type.

The REVA V is ICP’s flagship and the biggest armoured vehicle in its range with full independent suspension. This vehicle is available in various configurations to suit customer requirements. It can seat between six and eight people in the rear in addition to two crew members in the front, and is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. A V-shaped hull provides protection against landmines and IEDs (ballistic protection is to BR7 level Level 4A/B against IEDs and mines). The REVA V is just over seven metres long and weighs 16 tonnes unladen.

ICP is renowned for its REVA range of vehicles, an acronym for Reliable, Effective, Versatile, and Affordable. The REVA III 4×4 APC remains the company’s most popular and best-selling model, with over 2 000 units manufactured in South Africa. ICP has also expanded its manufacturing capabilities globally, establishing a plant in Iraq in 2005 where REVA vehicles were successfully produced.

REVA vehicles have been deployed across various regions worldwide, including Iraq, the UAE, Yemen, Somalia, Equatorial Guinea, Sudan, Egypt, Nigeria, Thailand, and South Africa.

Marx is a Germanic name, yes, but not exclusively Jewish. For example, the lawyer Herschel HaLevi Mordecai - Karl Marx's father - changed his name to Heinrich Marx in order to escape the Prussian ban on Jews practicing law. If Marx were an exclusively Jewish name, he would have chosen differently.

Flip Marx is an Afrikaner, and refers to himself as such in his address at the Voortrekker Monument about preserving "onse volk" history, traditions etc.

IDEX 2025: KORKUT Integration on Wahash 8x8 AFV

UAE-based Calidus displayed the Wahash 8x8 armoured fighting vehicle with ASELSAN’s KORKUT 35 mm air defence system in the IDEX 2025 exhibition.

A surprise from the IDEX2025 is the KORKUT integrated into the Calidus Wahash 8x8 armoured vehicle, signalling the country’s interest in the short-range air defence system. Wahash is a joint development by Calidus and the South African ADG Mobility that was unveiled in IDEX 2019.

Before Walash, KORKUT’s first integration on an 8x8 platform was on Otokar’s ARMA 8x8 armoured fighting vehicle, displayed in the IDEF’23 exhibition.

KORKUT is actively used with the Turkish Armed Forces onboard FNSS’s ACV-30 tracked armoured vehicle. In the ongoing counter-terrorism operations, KORKUT has been successfully used to counter UAV threats and against ground targets. The threat coverage also includes helicopters, low-flying aircraft, and cruise missiles.

KORKUT can fire various munitions armed with two 35 mm revolver cannons with a combined fire rate of 1100 RPM, including the standard 35 mm ammunition and ATOM 35 airburst ammunition.

ATOM 35, specifically developed for KORKUT and towed 35 mm anti-aircraft guns, is the system’s main effector. Upon exit, the fire control system programs the rounds to scatter metal fragments over a large area. Unlike proximity-fused rounds, programmed airburst ammunition is resistant to interference.

The turret includes the AKREP 100-G fire control radar with its own EO/IR tracking system. Additionally, KORKUT units can work alongside the command vehicle, which carries the KALKAN 200-G (MAR) searching radar with a range of 80 km.

Future developments for KORKUT include the KORKUT C-RAM variant, which will be used in conjunction with the STR 400-G (SERHAT DUAL) weapon-locating radar. The firing tests for KORKUT C-RAM were conducted in 2024.

The entire Indian IADS proved it's worth. The IACCS is a nation-wide IADS that includes not just S-400 but also Barak 8, Akash and its newer variants, SPYDER, upgraded Bofors L70, etc.

The S400 helped by ensuring that Paki jets had to stay low even when over Paki airspace. But most missile interceptions were by Barak 8 and most drone interceptions were by the Indian upgraded Bofors L70 and the Indian D4 C-UAS system.

Pakis countered this by using civilian airliners as human shields.

Anyways, S-400 were only a stop-gap purchase till India's own Project Kusha matures in the next 5 years. More than half of the other modernization efforts of Indian IADS are yet to be deployed, yet Pakis couldn't beach our IACCS. Once all those other upgrades and especially our Multi static VHF radars mature and get deployed by 2030, the Indian IACCS will be impregnable to the Pakis and ready to withstand even the mighty PLAAF.

In preparation for the impending flood and water disaster season in the Western Cape, government emergency services conducted a multi-agency flood preparedness exercise at Worcester's Qwaggaskloof Dam on May 13, 2025.
The exercise involved specialised units from the South African Police Service (SAPS), including Water Policing and Diving services SAR operators, K9 Search and Rescue, the Special Task Force and the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness EMS Western Cape, Metro Rescue, and the EMS Drone Unit.

The simulation focused on flood rescue techniques, with personnel practicing throw bag deployments and power swims for rapid victim retrieval, arc-based search patterns to systematically locate victims in water bodies, jet ski and rubber duck rescues, including the utilization of a rescue sled for patient extraction and rubber duck operations for mass rescues in deep or fast-moving water. The arc technique, a structured search method, was emphasized to improve efficiency in locating and retrieving victims while navigating hazardous currents.

With the Western Cape’s flood season approaching, such exercises ensure rescue teams are equipped to handle water-related disasters, including flash floods, river rescues, and storm-related emergencies. Integration of drones enhances search capabilities, while K9 resources provide additional support in locating missing persons.
Authorities highlighted the importance of inter-agency coordination, as floods often require a combined effort from police, disaster management personnel, and medical teams.

Tower35 developing Stabilised Commander Sight

Having successfully developed a four-axis stabilised airborne electro-optical gimbal, Pretoria-based Tower35 is finalising a new Stabilised Commander Sight (SCS) for land vehicles.

According to Hendrik Pieterse, Configuration Manager at Tower35, the goal of the project was to develop a cost-effective, scalable two-axis land-based Stabilised Commander Sight for local and international markets, that can be integrated with the client’s own electro-optical sensors or be delivered as a complete system tailored to the client’s requirements.

The Commander’s Sight is stabilised for mobile observation, and has a range of up to 10 km during day operations and 5 km during night operation. It incorporates an optical zoom day sensor and cooled thermal imager as well as a laser rangefinder. The sight has a field of elevation of -30 to +60 degrees, a slew rate of 60 degrees/second, and a weight of 45 kg. The laser rangefinder has a range of 12 km. Geo-location and pointing comes as standard with either a static pitch and roll sensor or INS (inertial navigation system) for mobile applications.

Optional additions include an 80 mJ laser designator, and a short wave infrared sensor.

With the assistance of Aerospace Industry Support Initiative (AISI) funding, Tower35 was able to further develop the system and extensively test it – it was demonstrated at a private local exhibition for military attaches, and was featured along with a client’s product at the Africa Aerospace and Defence (AAD) exhibition in September 2024. This year Tower35 aims to bring the sight to production ready status.

Tower35 was established in 2001, doing work for Hensoldt Optronics South Africa, and aerial photography. Over the years its capabilities expanded, including developing small electro-optical gimbals for the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Visual Air Productions, aircraft harmonisation equipment for the Rooivalk attack helicopter, stabilised cameras, video processors etc.

One of Tower35’s key products is its SPA280 airborne electro-optical gimbal, development of which began nearly ten years ago for Paramount Advanced Technologies and Saudi Arabia’s King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST). The four-axis airborne gimbal is suitable for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) as well as intelligence, surveillance, targeting, and reconnaissance (ISTR). As it weighs less than 20 kg it is suitable for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and other lightweight aircraft applications.

The SPA280 includes colour and monochrome near infrared TV sensors, a cooled infrared camera, and laser rangefinder, giving day/night capability. The day camera has a detection range of nearly 15 km and recognition range of 8 km, while the thermal camera has a detection range of over 12 km and recognition range of 6 km. Laser rangefinder range is up to 12 km.

The SPA280 has been sold to a number of customers, and Tower35 has received work internationally from companies like Halcon – other clients include Denel, African Astronautics, Reutech Radar Systems, Wild Images, Paramount, and Hensoldt South Africa.

Tower35 products are both free of US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and German BAFA (Federal Office of Economics and Export Control) restrictions.

SA military manufacturer pivots to Kia partnership to cover loss of iconic Toyota V8

Milkor has relied on Toyota’s robust Land Cruiser 79 series chassis for its Frontier border patrol vehicles, but Toyota’s decision to discontinue the V8 powertrain has forced SA’s premier private military contractor to seek alternatives.

Kia has offered the South African private military manufacturer Milkor its Tasman platform on which to build its border patrol vehicles when the Toyota Land Cruiser-based Frontier 4×4 project runs out of engines.
Milkor has relied on Toyota’s robust Land Cruiser 79 series chassis since its inception, but Toyota’s decision to discontinue the V8 powertrain has forced SA’s premier private military contractor to seek alternatives.

“The 79 series obviously is moving away from the 4.5 V8, moving to a 2.8 diesel,” explained Daniel du Plessis, Milkor’s marketing and communications director.

While the smaller 2.8-litre diesel engine might suffice for standard 4×4 configurations, it creates significant challenges for more advanced applications.

“In the 6×6 configuration, it makes it extremely difficult because you have an automatic gearbox now, which is very difficult to have a through shaft for the external for the third axle,” said Du Plessis.
Toyota’s V8 sunset timeline

Toyota’s plans to discontinue the venerable 4.5-litre turbodiesel V8 engine, which has powered the Land Cruiser 70 Series for 18 years, began with the 76 Series wagon in August 2024, and will be followed by the single- and double-cab 79 Series (the Frontier base) models in August 2025.
In its place will be a 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel, already used in the Hilux and Land Cruiser Prado. This is to bring these mighty steeds in line with stricter emissions standards and changing market demands.

Despite the imminent change, Du Plessis said the current Land Cruiser-based operations were secure in the short term.

“Our engagement with Toyota directly was that we don’t need to worry about it for now,” he said. “At least for the next two years, we will most likely continue using this. But the obvious alternative is the Kia in the near future.”
Kia Tasman to the rescue

The Kia Tasman, a rugged new pickup with a face only a devout bakkie fanatic would love, was unveiled in military trim earlier this year at Idex 2025 in Abu Dhabi and has emerged as Milkor’s chosen replacement platform. The partnership was initiated by Kia’s military division, based in South Korea.

“They approached us essentially to co-develop the system, and we proposed this platform. So, we’ll do the first prototype development of that quite soon,” said Du Plessis.

The Tasman appears well-suited to Milkor’s needs, requiring minimal modifications to serve as the basis for the Frontier.

“The Tasman essentially will be the undercarriage. There are no real upgrades needed to it. It’s actually a very rugged vehicle,” said Du Plessis. “Might be some suspension issues and components which we’ll need to change, but essentially getting a stock-standard Kia Tasman chassis with a few modifications, and then we just pop the same body on to it.

“The engine is actually quite powerful. It’s also produced by Kia themselves, so also a diesel engine.”

The powertrain in question is most likely from the long-serving Hyundai R family of 2.2-litre common rail diesel, which has been the beating heart of flagship Kias since its Korean sibling rescued it from bankruptcy in 1998.

Worthy successor?

The Tasman, Kia’s first serious entry into the bakkie market, appears to possess the capabilities necessary for specialised applications.

The military variant features a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine in a 150kW and 441Nm of torque state of tune, coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission. It can carry a payload of up to 1.1 tonnes and tow trailers weighing up to 3.5 tonnes.
With 252mm of ground clearance, an electronic locking differential, and the ability to ford water up to 800mm deep thanks to its snorkel, the Tasman offers impressive off-road credentials that align well with Milkor’s requirements.

What makes the Tasman particularly appealing as a long-term platform is its modular ladder-frame chassis, which Kia has designed to accommodate multiple powertrain options, and its eight to 12-year predicted lifespan. According to Roland Rivero, general manager of product planning at Kia Australia, the company is actively “studying and reviewing” both hybrid and fully electric variants of the Tasman.

As Toyota closes the chapter on its iconic V8 diesel engine, Milkor’s partnership with Kia represents an adaptive strategy to ensure the continued evolution of its specialised vehicle offerings, maintaining its capability to serve defence and security needs across Africa and beyond.
What’s the deal with the Frontier?

The Milkor Frontier is designed specifically for border surveillance operations, targeting law enforcement agencies, gendarmerie, and border management authorities. The vehicle features ballistic protection — capable of stopping an AK-47 armour-piercing round — while maintaining the agility required for difficult terrain.
With a range of up to 800km thanks to extended fuel tanks, the Frontier can be customised with various accessories, including weapon systems and command and control suites.

Milkor has morphed into a full-service military and defence contractor with its flagship 380 drone now reaching full production. DM

We knew it was going to happen. Elon Musk and Right-Winger Afrikaners had already bought Trump..... We expected the orange man to be on the attack, luckily our president is a lawyer by profession and he deals with white nationalists all the time.

But the crazy part is that the Afrikaner Right Wingers are mad that the white Minister of Agriculture didn't tell their propaganda as they were hoping he would... They are even threatening not to vote for him in the next election... They don't know that Julius Malema can team up with Jacob Zuma in the next election and give them their white g#nocide they so desire. grin

Mr Ramaphosa really handled this well. I aspire to have his level of calmness during tense situations like this. One wrong word or mistake in his speech and the likes of CNN would spam propaganda portraying S.A as anti-white. And the opposition party Minister of Agriculture did well to back him up without looking at differences in race or political affiliations.

Ramaphosa has been humiliated beyond reasonable doubt.

Trump was well prepared for him, and he wasn't prepared for this meeting. He should have sent his foreign minister instead.

The answers from Rupert and the Agriculture minister were not convincing enough. They did try to save face, but they needed to be more articulate with their responses.

Infact Rupert was begging for American help, I mean you negotiate a better agreement, not beg the person accusing you of genocide.

The whole thing was not well handled and your President should have traveled with a better team.

I mean the claims of farmer genocide are absolute nonsense, but Right wingers have now perfected the art of spreading misinformation and Ramaphosa was ill prepared.
