Good evening nairalands, please who can explain this to me, as I am tonally scared and confused. I started charging this phone when I got home from work say around to eight. Because I slept early after taking dinner, only to wake up now and went straight to the parlor to check my phone qhere I was charging it. First I notice this smell when an electronic device is buring or has burned, I quickly checked my PC and unplug it and I went straight to my phone saw it was just 60% and was not charging but I saw that the charger was smelling so I unplug and perceive the phone n the odour was every strong. Only to check the back and I saw this. I quickly check the charger with my wife's phone also A16 Samsung and it was working. I later test it again with my phone n was working pls what would have caused these. Picture of the phone and charger below.

I told her maybe it is fake one. The moment she removed the pouch...... sad sad.the original battery nor dey sef
It's not his phone. It's the charger. Why will he use a 65w and maybe 12.5V charger on a 5v and maybe 45w max phone?

It was bound to happen. The phone's overcharge and over voltage features had protected him enough.

Is not a bad thing to charge your phone with a PC type c....the charging watts automatically adjust to the capacity of the phone.

Your phone might be next. Learn from people's experience.

You never can tell if the board/panel of your phone will recover

WHY USE LAPTOP CHARGER TO CHARGE YOU PHONE

jonnypie:
Thank you guys for the input, yes is true I use my hp charger and I have been using it over a year but I suspected that too, coupled with the fact that when I came back home to charger the phone the light was really unstable was just fluctuating between highs and lows. Though the phone, the battery and the charger are very much okay but I am getting a charger this morning and I will stop using the laptop charger, God bless you all...

because you are the manufacturer abi?, the people that made it work know what they are doing, or do u think it works by mistake,
even iphones, dell ,samsungs have switched to type c, which is a universal standard, do u think is still by mistake?,
so the purpose is to use a unified charger for most common device

Your Sub-board is goon, your battery burnt.

I will also advise you to start buy a new battery, the one on your phone has been compromised and might explode and damage your phone if you continue to use it.
If you love your phone then replace that battery.

Use original charger, you say its too expensive

Original charger would have prevented this from happening. Worst case scenario, the charger will stop working. Never underestimate the function of an original charger. It protects n charges your phone

1. Unstable current
2. That cover/condom may have caused excessive heat to the phone.

I blame the EU for this, forcing phone manufacturers to exclude chargers from the phone package because of the "environment". Now you are left to buy chargers that might not be as good as the original.

IjeBos:
Depends on what the output voltage of the laptop Charger is. If it is 5V or a PD charger there is no "excess voltage".
And laptop charges are generally built better.

Too many variables to decide.
Were you using a surge protector with the charger?

It could be a surge which damaged the charger which sent too high voltage to the phone, caused by the fluctuating electricity.
Or it could be an issue with the phone battery.
I would take the charger out of service until you can figure out what caused what.
Your phone at a minimum needs a new battery and charging circuit, not sure other circuits/components weren't damaged.

And I reread your post.
What compelled you to test the charger in an undamaged device? You are lucky you don't have 2 broken phones.
I had a somewhat similar experience except it was a cable that fell into water and after it dried up it was still working, although once in a while it would disconnect. I used it for months until one day it spoilt 2 of my phones, a redmi and Samsung. Changed the Redmi charging port with no issues but the Samsung even after changing the charging port it still doesn't work. Would you know what got damaged in the Samsung? Already tested another battery and wireless charging still works.

I had an issue with an A72 I bought for my mom. The charging port wouldn't work. Got her a new phone but decided to fix it myself for a backup. Purchased another charging port/circuit to replace it and it still wouldn't work. Turns out that one was defective as well. Replaced the charging port again and it's been working since. Maybe the one it was replaced with was defective.

I doubt because I ordered one from aliexpress and some phone engineers also used one from another working phone and non worked.

I hope you understand "power ratings"

People burn structures because of things similar to this.
Some people will use the wrong cable for wiring, it will work when testing and then one day the wire will maybe melt, spark and possibly start a fire and it becomes a sorry state

"That it works doesn't mean it's recommended"

But if the wireless charging is still working then just get the fastest wireless charger you can get.

you dont seem to understand more about electrical gadget, you just talking from a laymans point of view

i hope you know what is usb type-c, you can use you google to validate please,

type-c is to be used for for universal purposes, where the device only takes the power rated for it, and nothing more,
please google about type-c , i dont like blind argurements with people without facts,

you dont seem to know much about usb type-c and what it offers, you are just saying "because it works is not recommeded", recommended by who?
bye bro

Lol! We've heard this since the introduction of USB-C a few years ago. PD and AI charge in USB-C is a new solution. The laptop charger still needs to offer something like this 5V/2A, 9V/2A, 15V/3A or 20V/2.25A. Chargers are beyond wattage ratings

Otherwise, you will still see the difference when you charge with the laptop charger - most likely the phone's temperature will increase - compared to the charger that best fits the phone.

Let me even shock you, some Samsung screens that got damaged was because of the charger type. I'm talking about USB-C Samsung devices.

All in all, that it's USB-C doesn't mean you should just plug it into anything USB-C, check the charger and the device. This is the explicit way of saying "that it works doesn't mean it's recommended"

Wireless fast charging recharges in about 2hr30mins, I miss being able to do that in 1 hour. I will just manage it then sell later.

I'd assume the usb port and the wireless charger go to the same charging circuit for the battery. So that isn't damaged. Might be a damaged capacitor or diode or even corrosion on the USB port board/circuit connector.
But a competent repair person should be able to figure it out. But again, it depends on how old the phone is if it is worth it.
Good Luck.

Sorry, USB-C is a universal standard.
1.) Devices draw the current that they need.
2.) USB-C PD charges default to 5V. The device has to ask for the higher voltage for faster charging such as 9V if it supports it and the charger has to be able to provide it.
3.) So, the difference is in how good the USB-C device is made. The tolerances of the voltages, etc i.e does 5V voltage fluctuate to say 7v instead of 5V. So, a well designed laptop charger which was made for a $1000 device is probably designed with better components than a USB-C charger you buy on the side of the road for 1k.

You are partially right.
It is important to make sure you are using a good charger and to check the back to make sure it outputs the proper voltages to charg at the speed you want it to. But a proper USB-C charger will output 5V at the default.
In fact I even go further, I have a USB tester where I can see the voltage and current my USB device is drawing from the charger.
But USB-C is a universal standard, any USB-C charger properly designed should output 5V in tolerance.
