Did u read the supreme court judgement?

The premise upon which the judgement was made is that the custom is discriminatory. It is discriminatory for a female to be denied right of inheritance based on gender.

By the way, to answer Ur question : it is my sister that owns whatever she inherits from my parents' properties, not her husband family name.

Individuals (as in humans) inherit properties, not names (inanimate objects/abstract stuff).

What kind of thinking is that? Like u are more concerned about the name of who gets a property than the actual relationship between the owner of the property and the person who inherits it? 😲

I can already deduce from Mrs Mojekwu’s argument that she wants her husband’s property handed over to her grandson which is right.

It is undeniable that in villages, traditional law is supreme. Even age grades can settle land disputes. Plots of land in villages belongs to families which is represented by “a name”. If a woman gets married, she bears a new name and all her inheritance belongs to her family and a new name. Lands belonging to the Okafors in Awka could become lands owned by the Osas from Edo.

Well, maybe in Ur culture land belongs to families but in normal settings a land purchased by a man belongs to him and he can always pass it on to his kids whether male or female. Any custom that forbids him passing it down to his female kids is discriminatory and has no leg to stand on in the face of the law

Honestly, this is really sad. There’s absolutely no justification for the interviewer’s behaviour. If the roles were reversed—if someone from a different racial background had made the same comment—there would be a public outcry over racial discrimination, bias, and profiling.

This is exactly why most Western societies strive to build diverse interview panels with people from various racial and cultural backgrounds. It’s also why they place a strong emphasis on DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion). Frankly, I suspect the only reason someone with his kind of reasoning and loose tongue was even included on the panel is because of diversity quotas—not because he possesses the qualifications or professionalism expected of someone in that position. Acting so uncouth in a professional setting is a fast track to serious consequences, and I sincerely hope the interviewee takes steps to hold him accountable.

I also get the sense that he’s projecting—accusing the interviewee of something he himself is guilty of. That’s likely the only reason he had the audacity to bring it up in that setting. In fact, if a proper background check were run on him today, I’d bet he has skeletons in his closet—just like we’ve come to realise that some of our so-called moral policemen on this thread aren’t who they claim to be.

You can’t boast about every intangible thing in your life, then suddenly claim you’re “just comfortable” when it comes to money, using that as an excuse not to talk about it. Broke is broke—and that’s okay.

And you definitely can’t claim to dislike Yahoo boys and corruption, only to turn around and mock a hardworking man for earning an honest living—just because you think his job is beneath you. No sir, that makes you a hypocrite.

I hope it stops. But recently I still had to deal with such issue on my desk.

The deceased guy was just 30, he worked with one of our subsidiaries as a junior staff before his demise. He left behind a young wife and daughter who is about a year old or thereabouts.

By company policy, a deceased staff's dependants are entitled to his death benefits which runs into millions depending on the deceased staff's level. All the dependants need to do is provide his death certificate and few other documents.

I learnt this guy's elder sister had carried his bike while the wife was still mourning and she was already making moves to gun for the death certificate and other documents so she can corner the wife and go directly to HR to get the brother's death benefits.

The person in HR reached out to me and narrated the whole issue to me. He made known of his desire to have the widow get the benefits instead of the sister who had already carried his bike, clothes and few electronics claiming she paid his school fees so she deserves to reap from his sweat.

Long story short, the wife got the death benefits eventually based on some of the advise I gave the HR person and the steps I asked him to follow. But the whole thing just made me shudder at the thought that there are indeed people who still think a woman with a kid should be thrown out to suffer. This particular lady married the guy against her own parents' wishes o; she abandoned her college of education Programe in her final year due to the pregnancy.

These things still dey happen o; na earlier this year the whole matter sup.

I dislike people in the work place who judge others based on their bias rather than what they can do on the job. U know the kind of people that will be in the interview panel, see a lady without earrings due to her religious beliefs(maybe deeper life) and u suddenly don't think she's fit for the job because u dont like deeper life.
