My interview was scheduled 8am but I got to the embassy by 6:45am I knew where to go to because I visited there a day B4. Before I was interviewed a lot of blues were seen flying.. I just want to say this *Please do not CRAM* just know your story

Interview proper

Vo: pass me your i-20 and you passport please.

Me: here U go, good morning sir (with a smile)

Vo: what do U want to do in the US?

Me: I am going for my PhD program in physics with a concentration in computational physics at the University of Florida (I stuttered in the first three words).

Vo: how many schools did you apply to?

Me: I applied to three schools, University of Florida, University of Pittsburgh, University of Alabama....(he didn't let me to continue be asking..)

Vo: so why this school?

Me: I choose University of Florida because of the perfect alignment of my interest with prof Bleep whose research focuses on the use of computational techniques such as DFT calculations and ML simulations to understand the properties of materials.. this research is relevant for me to address the limitations in using and relying on only traditional experimental methods for research in Nigeria

Vo: so how's that? (I was very confused with this question but this point he was staring at me.. so I figured he wanted to know what areas computational techniques could address this limitations)

Me: In my recent research on synthesis of copper antimony sulfide nano crystals where I worked as a research assistant......we needed to substitute different hilides to form halogen with sulfur, we could do that with experimental methods which would take a lot of... But material studio a computational tool could do that and simulate results in hours... (he nodded, I guessed he was pleased)

Vo: (looks at my I20 )how will you be funding this program?

Me: I got a graduate teaching assistantship which covers my tuition, living expenses and health insurance and I got this by submitting a competitive (I didn't want to say this word at first but it came out anyway) application consisting of my transcript which reflects my strong academic background where I graduated at the top of my class with a CGPA of Bleep, my statement of purpose, 3 letters of recommendation from my undergraduate professors and I was invited for an interview by prof Bleep my graduate coordinator and prof Bleep, where I elaborated how my research aligned with prof Bleep and why I choose this school (At this point he was typing really fast, and there was this little silence so I asked)

Me: can I Tell you about my research (even though I knew I have said it a lot of times b4)

Vo: No it's fine.(After some time)

Vo: so what will you be doing after graduation?

Me: Immediately after my graduation I will be coming back to my Alma mata federal university of technology where I currently work as a graduate research assistant to take up a senior researcher role which will position me to train teach and educate young scientist in the use of computational techniques as a substitute to experimental methods, I will.....vo cuts in

Vo: slow down...(With a smile)

Vo: have you been to Gaza before?

Me: No officer, I have not (me too with a smile)

Vo: Alright, I will be approving Ur visa, this paper will tell U how to collect Ur passport.... (I no hear anything again)

Good guys, i have a question.

My profile is as follows:

I'm a software engineer with 3+ years of experience
COA is $30k (no funding) - (I tried securing funding, but I didn't get it)
I can sponsor myself, but I would also like to add my mum as a sponsor. So we will be joint sponsors.

What has the experience of people with my kind of profile been?

I've seen fully funded guys denied, but I've not seen much of those that even went without funding. I can actually afford the education because I will only be paying tuition and fees. Accommodation is sort of covered. But again, even with being genuine what do you think I should do ?

Lol, I won't call that travel history. But, I visited India and Dubai about 14 years ago. I've also been to SA, and the normal Ghana, Togo, etc, West African countries. But again, none of them has been in the last 5 years.
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 18 by JohnZak: 7:41pm On May 27, 2025
On balance, having some form of school-sponsored funding or external scholarship is better than no funding. However, as you alluded to, some people here with full or almost full funding have been denied and others with little or no funding have been given visas. If you want to, you can apply to schools where you stand a chance of receiving some funding. On the other hand, since you can genuinely afford the tuition, you can also take a chance. You only need to obtain favor from one person.

Also times are changing with respect to student visas now and not necessarily in a good way. Things may be challenging now but it doesn’t mean they can’t be worse. Apparently, they plan on pausing student visa interviews for a while.

Good luck with whatever choice you decide to take.

Hello House, 2 quick questions

1. Is there anybody here by chance going to university of minnesota?

2. Is it advisable to change my school to another after securing visa (COA matters) and how to go about that

Hello Paul.

1. I know four people currently going to the school but they are Ghanaians and pls don't let us talk about it.

2.. It is not advisable while you are still in Nigeria because you can get yourself entangled in an entry-mistake and be sent back home for correction.

** When you arrive in the U.S. go to the DSO at your current University asking for a SEVIS transfer to the new University (you must have gotten admission). Your DSO will start the process and once its done (approximately 14-days) you will be notify immediately and the DSO at your new University will issue your New Form I-20. 👍

Hello Michael.

Do not continue the process if it is a PhD admission, but If it is Bsc or Msc funding is not compulsory for you if you can absolutely pay all your COA and proof that capability to the consular.

Funding is not a criterion or it is just one of the criteria (for Phd applicants ) for visa approval decision, therefore, every other F1 visa requirements must be given equal concentration (this is why you have seen full funded Phd/Msc applicants with visa denial).

** Transfer your wealth or your financial capacity to your mum (temporarily) and state her as your sole sponsor . It is not always advisable to use joint sponsors as it can cause outright denial from a lazy consular who doesn't want to do the stress of complicated verification or you might be placed on 221g in order to further verify the joint accounts.

Consular officers have less time allocated for each applicant so the aforementioned can happen when you are trying to over stretch their time with complicated visa application.

** However, if you are absolutely certain about your sources of income with obvious proofs (ie website, past and current contracts , fixed deposit money etc) which will continue while you are still schooling in america then you can indicate a self-sponsor. 👍

Good morning guys. Please look at the scenario below and advise on how to proceed.

Interview for F1 scheduled tomorrow in Abuja. If visa is approved, I will like the passport delivered to me in Lagos, on or before June 11 because I need it to travel on the 13th. Which pickup option should I select to ensure that I receive it on time? Should I choose the option today before my the interview or after my visa is approved (inshallah). I need it delivered to me as quickly as possible.

Please advice is needed from people who know how this stuff works.

Hello,

Please guys, I am preparing for another student visa interview, after being previously denied. I want to share my full details and seek advice from experts here. I really want to weigh my chances and get guidance on what to do better this time. Please find my information below:

My interview Transcript
Unsuccessful Application.
Abuja.
Visa denial under section 214b

Which program are you going for?
I am going for my Master of science in Information Technology with a concentration in IT systems and management at washington university of science and technology in Alexandria city, Virginia.

Why this Program?
I choose this program because it aligns perfectly with my role as a Cloud Security Engineer at …...an organization that supports young women in tech. This course will strengthen my technical and leadership skills in managing complex IT infrastructures and allow me advance in my Career and to contribute more effectively to my organization’s mission.

Who is your sponsor?
I was given a tuition assistance of 1,188 dollars and the rest of my tuition fees as well as my living expenses will be covered by My elder sister, ... in the UK, she earns between 48000 - 50000 dollars yearly, Plus, she doesn’t have kids or any major financial commitments, so she’s in a great position to fully fund my Education. I also have $10,000 in savings to supplement her support.

Have you been to the USA before?
No, I havent had any reason to do so.

Current Profile:
Have Bsc in Computer Sci
Program: Master’s in Information Technology
I’m a Cloud Security Engineer (1 yr work experience here), with 3 years of work experience in the tech field.
COA: $22,500
Tuition assistance from school: $1,188
My elder sister is my sponsor (my I-20 states “Family”), and I will contribute $10,000 from my personal savings to it (I have proof of this).
I have no international travel history.

Note:
In my previous I-20, my personal contribution of $10,000 was not included because the school felt my sponsor’s funds were enough. Its now included in my current 1-20.

1. Write GRE
2. Your profile is already stained with your sister being a tie in the uk
3. Secure Funding, that helps you clean your profile.
4. F1 is like a Triangle, wider at the Base and it gets so thinner every time you get it wrong.
5. There are no emotions ooo !!

COA: $22,500
Tuition assistance from school: $1,188
My elder sister is my sponsor (my I-20 states “Family”), and I will contribute $10,000 from my personal savings to it (I have proof of this).

Note:
In my previous I-20, my personal contribution of $10,000 was not included because the school felt my sponsor’s funds were enough. Its now included in my current 1-20.
Hello Okoye.

*** Your full details here is not enough because it only briefed your transcript. Your full detail should be your previous ds - 160 details and your overall profile but lets leave that side.

Visa denial under section 214b

*** Aside of INA 221g, 214b is the 2nd best reason for all visa denials which allows you to re-apply. Any other reason (s) other than the mentioned is worst ie ..

Criminal History
INA section 212(a)(2).

Previous Visa Violations.
INA section 212(a)(9)(B)

Fraud or Misrepresentation.
INA section 212(a)(6)(C)(i). ETC.....

*** If i were the consular and you have scored all points B4 this i would still have denied you based on this unnecessary story ( my elder sister is my sponsor....Period). If the consular needs further info he or she will ask eg,... Where is your sister ? What does she do ? Etc.

*** Your overall working experiences is good.
*** You should have transferred the $10k to your sister and state her as the only sponsor . Combining funds or sponsors means you are struggling to gather the resources.
*** Anyways since you have proofs just equip yourself with self proof as well as your sister's financial proof. Proof of honesty to corroborate what you are saying in tandem with your Form I-20 & DS 1-60 infos is actually what the consular needs.
** You do not need international travel experience to secure F1 visa. Its not part of the requirements. Its only a kind of requirement for B1/B2.

Please how about a situation when one has the money in his or her personal account but then either of my father or mother gets to write a letter of introduction stating that I am supporting him or her with such an amount while the rest comes from the applicant's personal savings
*** Consular officers even your schools in America prefers that your scholarship award money, money from sponsors etc is deposited in your personal account because that is the best guaranteed that you have direct access to the funds.

** Your father or mother does not need to write a letter (as in affidavit of support by an organisation etc) of support. Just go along with the financial proof of where the money is coming from as the embassy knows how to verify.

** I am not in support of combined or joint sponsors (except joint scholarship awards) especially within same family because this will look like you are struggling to raise the funds which is not good enough as one of the joint-sponsor may disappoint in the subsequent year.

If your joint sponsorship is already a fait accompli just provide the full evidence and be honest to the consular about it but neither of your parent should write any letter. 👍
