Can a country work when less than 20% of the people pay taxes?

Answer that, and we can talk.

Oga PDP man wey wan call me agbado, because I dey laugh at am!

I can't lie to you.
You have accepted his words as absolute fact that only 19% of Nigerians pay tax. What’s his proof of that though? It is incumbent on whoever that makes a claim to also prove.

Furthermore, if only 20% of people in a country pay tax, what is being done to ensure that this gets to the required percentage? Why is he telling us all this story if he lacks power to rectify it? If there is any merit in what he is saying, he is inducting himself because it means that the tax collection process is porous. If tax collection in the west was similarly porous, many people wouldn’t pay tax. People pay tax there because they know they are in trouble if they don’t.

Many Nigerians never see real tax

They go to the UK, and see anemites and think the government sold 10 m barrels of oil and paid for all that...when the cold reality is that every city in the UK charges between 180-200 pounds in council tax, which you will pay on top of your income tax and VAT. That is how they can afford all those nice things in the uk.

But in Nigeria, we dey use oil money to fool ourselves. Even during GEJ time, people who knew, and who were not opposing GEJ, were shouting that the money we earned was not enough at all.
In uk you pay income tax, council tax and health tax.

I pay income tax, local govt tax, street naming tax( I was told the money has increased last 2 weeks),
Landlords association levy, Nepa levy, vigilante levy and contribute money for road where I live.

Add all together, I pay more in nigeriathan in uk.

As of now as I don't live in Nigeria anymore, the only one I don't oay is income tax, the rest, I still pay by virtue of having a house and a name somewhere there.

My people have shops all over nigeria. Do you know what they pay monthly?
Some run in hundreds as of 10yrs ago.

Ordinary market woman selling tomato can't calculate her monthly income, local govt do the calculation for her by giving her a quote every month. Is that not income tax?

What about shop tax of every day, sanitation tax nko?
Because we don't have statistics, people like you assume only civil servants pay tax. Market people pay tax more than civil servants in Nigeria. Ask local govt chairmen. A

Don't mind that guy.
I have lived in both world and I will say I spend more in Nigeria as tax and levies than in the UK.

The only thing I don't pay is income tax in Nigeria.
And when we pay landlord levy, they charge you according to the worth of your house. Don't eve know the rationale behind that.

I pay a lot for naming a street every year. Is that not tax?
I still pay landlord tax to local govt. That levy wike sealed pdp house for, I pay that.
When I bought my land, I coughed out a certain % to the local govt. To approve the building plan, another hundreds of thousands. And in between, they will come for another money.
Before you finish your house, local govt will collect more than 1m. That was some yrs ago.
You will still do your water, but nepa cable and wire your street. I'm not in Nigeria but I'm still paying. Ask traders why they increase prices of goods indiscriminately. Because of tax. Nothing more. Some pay in millions.

At tinubu square,a family member pay millions to local govt every year excluding other levies.

That guy don't know what he is talking about.

And only 19 percent of the tax revenues are not stolen or fritted away by government hacks.....

When the people get value for money they will fall over themselves to pay taxes...

Unless that Nigerian is not making money.
Even in a hole, they will find them. What you should say is Nigerians pay more indirect tax than direct tax that is not accounted for. You see tax, since I was small, people have been paying tax. Even my grandparents.

My grandma said though fighting was going on, her parents were paying tax during the war. They were big merchants( sold tobacco, cig and those stuffs).

Nigerians pay tax everyday in their shops. Tell your go to to use to be productive time with that money instead of siphoning it.
Do you know how much transporters pay everyday. Ask me oluoma. Shops like idumota, main market onitsha rakes in billions every year.
Where is the money?

Even private cars pay tax to police. There is no angle Nigerian govt don't milk Nigerians from.
So rest this your argument.

A d the most annoying thing is we don't see any tangible thing they do with this money.
But most of us don't pay income tax.

Call me when half your income goes on income tax, as happens in saner climes.

Again, you are not most nigerians.

BECAUSE IT IS TRUE.

It is even better than 2016 when PwC stated that the value was 16%.

I have known about how bad it is since that 2019. It is very bad . Most of us are in the informal sector, so we don't pay income tax.

Traders pay income tax every month in Nigeria.

In uk, if you are self employed, there is a way to calculate an estimate of what you should pay.
In Nigeria, they don't do that. Those local govt officials quote figure for you based on what they assume you will be making and you oay that every month. Local govt tax traders pay every month is income tax and it's more than what workers pay.
A mama put by the side sometimes pay more than a director. Then they come with other petty petty levies. That's council tax.
And still, you take care of stuffs after paying all these.

Perhaps, but at the end, they are not paying to the federal government, and there are poor records.

SImple and short.

Which fact?
I am a witness to that. The tax I pay now and when I was in Nigeria is so diff. Besides that area was my first degree. Nigerians pay triple what folks abroad pay and there is no accountability especially non government workers, artisans and traders. Apologies if I missed that significant detail but point me to where it says “income tax” rather than “tax.”
The reality of Nigerians is that they are taxed in sone form or the other. These are monies they have to do away with which would have made them have more disposable income otherwise.

Is it the fault of Nigerians that most of them do not belong to the formal sector? Is it the fault of Nigerians that the government is unable to effective deploy a tax regime that will effectively receive taxes and use same for provision of social amenities properly?

Is it the fault of informal players that they get taxed all manner of frivolous levies by hoodlums and touts loyal to government officials? Don’t the government officials know that the tout industry is a billion naira one? Can’t they deploy the system in such a way that the money doesn’t end up in private pockets of government loyalists that collect millions everyday and patronize call girls daily but it is deployed in an organized manner to meet social demands?

It is wrong to assert that only 19% of Nigerians pay tax as suggested in the write up just like it’s wrong to imply that only income tax is relevant in the tax discourse.

Re: Only 19% Of Nigerians Pay Taxes, Says FIRS Boss by Lookmun: 7:51pm On May 29, 2025
It’s called gaslighting! You guys are gaslighting Nigerians for a role that government is supposed to do but is clearly unwilling to do.

Even the guys that do POS cash business on the roadsides are levied daily in a ridiculous manner. These monies end up in private pockets of “larger than life” boys of the political big-wigs.

So I am wondering if players in the informal sector are supposed to help the government set up a system of effectively collecting and deploying these levies for state use?

Some people want to bury their head in the sand and claim that government is borrowing and in need because Nigerians don’t pay taxes when the tout industry that operates daily in broad day light is a multi-billion dollar one.

How do you even know that you don’t have enough when the so-called little is being embezzled unrestrained?

That gaslighting ain’t gonna work.

My argument is that if these taxes/levies are properly streamlined, you will discover that most people in the informal sector pay more tax than they would otherwise have paid if they were in paid employment. So make anybody no dey do argument about Nigerians not paying income tax.
