The victims, who were reportedly crossing the river by canoe from Epomiri Village, Ovom Ama Asaa in Obingwa LGA, lost their lives in the accident that has left both Obingwa and Ugwunagbo communities in mourning.

The deceased include two young men from Umuejea Village, two from Okuenyi Village in Ward 10, and one from Akpaa Mbato in Ward 8 of Obingwa LGA. They were said to be on their way to pay their last respects at a traditional wake when the canoe capsized mid-crossing.

The tragic incident has sparked an outpouring of grief and renewed concerns over the safety of river transportation in rural communities. Locals have called for urgent government intervention to provide safer means of crossing rivers, especially in areas where canoes remain the primary mode of transport.

As the communities mourn the loss of these vibrant youths, efforts continue to support the grieving families and ensure proper burial rites are carried out.

Terrible lose....Junior pope comes to mind...the best way to prevent such scenario is to use lifejacket....if u have to cross a river just insist on using life jacket, if u can afford it buy one for yourself....

Peace To The Fallen!!!

This is the reason I have taken it as a sacred duty to learn how to swim. Survival is intrinsic....

Only if they knew how to swim....

I hardly attend occasions since it almost cost my life 3 years ago. Despite what happened to me the occasion went on as though nothing happened. Occasions are not mandatory especially if it can go on well without your presence. If it is not extremely convenient you won't see me. On my day(occasion) if you don't come no issues too.

People read their Bibles, but choose to ignore the part where Jesus said Let the dead bury their dead.

RIP to the deceased.

Abia state govt should improve on water transport safety and ensure that all boat/canoe operators have sufficient life jackets for the riders.

May God comfort their families. But why did they place palm front on their legs? To appease Marine spirit that killed them?

Anyone crossing any water body should atleast have a knowledge of swimming. Or have a life jacket.

RIP.

Make it a basic law. You as a person must know how to drive and swim by age 15. My grand father applied it on his kids, my dad applied it on his family. My kids are relatively good swimmers now, driving is next. I have save more than 10 people just cos I can swim by age 13.
