Could anyone here provide support or guidance on how to obtain one, or explain how the process works?

You need a sponsor who has a working visa residence permit in Germany. Ask he/she to walk to any ausländerbehörde and ask for a date and the requirements of the city. They'll submit payslips, house contract etc and the creditworthiness will be checked. It cost just €29
