Very true, DSTV was premium in the 90s. You had to buy a swimming pool size dish back then to access it. I am talking about the time BBC and KTV were sharing one station. If you were there say hi, old time rich peeps. Subscription came with Dish magazine.

From there it went to net dish and eventually to what it is today. A product for everyone.

The good days of subscription TV is come and gone, it's a different ball game, you may keep fighting to remain in game but bit by bit it keep biting off you till you can't take it anymore.

What do you watch on dstv though? I sold my dish the moment I installed fiber network in my home.
Good evening, please what's the cost implications for the fibre installation?

Tell your multi-nonsense to either implement pay as you watch or stop calling me to come back. I can't subscribe for a full month when I only spend few hours to watch. It doesn't make economic sense.

Wow, this is such a real and well-put perspective. It’s true—there was a time when DStv felt like gold, and only a few had access. Now it’s become so woven into our daily lives that any disruption or price change feels personal.

What really hits here is the idea that MultiChoice is being “punished” for doing things too well for too long. They’ve built a service so reliable and central that people expect it to act like a public service—even though it’s a private business navigating the same tough economy we all are.

This post isn’t just about DStv—it’s a reminder of how quickly luxury becomes entitlement, and how success sometimes attracts unfair pressure. Definitely food for thought.

But didn't lie, did he? Where is HiTV and the much touted alternatives, they all faded away
Alternatives are not the Hitvs.....alternatives are the netflix, prime and several streaming platforms.

The only reason I still subscribe is because of premier league and UEFA champions league. In fact, the only time I switch on the TV is when I want to watch football
Other times you're on nairaland earning your daily pay by defending a failure

With the advent of free streaming and movie download apps like Moviebox, I kissed that yeye DSTV goodbye. Firsthe off they hardly show latest content and constant repetitions of shows made the service a bad option. I'm a movie buff when I'm not reading or chasing knowledge trail in one website or another so it kinda hit a low for me.
Our sports guys can still be using it but for me it's MovieBox all the way
You see that repetition of programs en, I detest it! The fact that apart from live matches there is nothing more to watch makes dstv and gotv pricing a rip-off. Repeating old and useless movies irritates me. Another evil they have been doing in recent times is the shutting down of interesting channels.

I worry less about the pricing in itself. My major focus is their content. What am I paying for? If I am not watching football, what else is worth the pay?

Dstv lost its edge.. aside from showing programs that were not captivating, they were frequently repeating already aired programs.

One major attribute of business that survive in Nigeria is the ability to adapt. There has been this outcry for them to run a pay per view package but they refused to listen. Remember how mtn and econet give a hundred reasons why they couldn't do per sec billing unto glo came and scattered the table....imagine if mtn stuck to their guns and still keep per min billing

Dstv, had it good then because there was no viable alternative but this is no more 2010, the market has shifted, either you adapt or die
So which business has adapted and survived in Nigeria without adjusting price

DStv gets dragged because it doesn't operate Pay As You Go in its subscription bouquet. Netflix does, and people are happy.

DStv is still the best option in Africa. It is sad. They’ve held us hostage since 1993 and things won’t change till 2050. Though, better picture quality is available from online options, Nigerians do not have the capital to migrate to those. If we can’t measure up, we should shut up and endure. If not for the company, we would not know that consistent high definition broadcasts could exist. Me? I watch only UFC with the service. Nothing else intrigues me. The movies they have available are downloadable or streamable online. The only way to hold my attention is to provide entertainment straight from cinemas. Then and only then can they continue receiving my patronage.

I had so much rest of mind since I bought sltv for footballs and the whole family enjoys it that way, for other interesting movies and programmes we download them on YouTube. DSTV NA SHIT

You forgot to mention HiTV who had initial success but could not sustain it and failed.

Multichoice had it's day but this is the era of Netflix. It's pay as you go for cheap.
No more expensive subscriptions the code has been cracked.

Proudlyngwa:

It's not just about price adjustment but matching the adjustment to meet customers need.
Marketing with good pricing is about making the consumer feel like he is getting more for less.

If I were dstv, I would roll out pay per view bouquet that would make peg a view per station per day at 500 naira for example.

Make this loud thru giggles and what not, the same way those fast food restaurants would show an advert of fast food for 1k per plate but when u go inside to buy that combo, u may pay more. All na marketing

This alone would make People interested and would flock to get dstv . Some clients would spend less while those who love multiple channels would have spend more thereby balancing the Deficit. Imagine if u watch 4 channels a day that's 2k. 2k times 20 days. Do the maths

Nor let me teach dstv how to market for free jare. I have more ideas but they have to pay me fess

I know you didn't really call Hitv
Subairu or whatever his name is has no business running a business(pun i know grin)
Hitv was doomed as was Tstv from the go
As for Dstv i don't think people are angry about the price increase as such
It's paying that exorbitant subscription fee to watch one movie 10 times a month
Or is it the satellite that crashes each time rain falls
That being said Dstv in Africa has no rivals as north Africa have their own satellite with their middle east cousins
So this article is not necessary tbh

You must be working there to type this trash.
Exploiting Nigerians by repeating old programmes and the likes .
SLTV is taking over.
They should go to South Africa.

Your idea is laudable but it can't work
Dstv pay sky upwards a billion or more to broadcast premier league football
Then pay Uefa close to that for UCL rights
Someone has to pick up the tab
