What if for non medical reasons? Most suvs come with factory fitted tinted glasses for the rear seats
Most SUVs and modern cars come with factory-fitted tinted windows — especially at the back.
But under Nigerian law, any glass that obscures visibility (even if factory-installed) requires a Tinted Glass Permit.

You don’t need to have a medical condition to apply.
Non-medical reasons like: – Factory tint
– Privacy
– Protection from sun/heat
– Personal security
...are valid as long as you apply properly.

I actually put together a full Tinted Glass Permit InfoGuide to help people process it the right way (without bribes or stress).
If you're interested, I can share more details.

Great question!

As of now, applying for the Police Tinted Glass Permit is completely free of charge on the official Nigerian Police portal. You don’t have to pay ₦14,700 or any yearly fee for the permit itself.

However, here's where some confusion may come from:

₦14,700 is often related to Police Character Certificate or other services — not the Tinted Permit.

Some applicants end up paying “agents” or “facilitators” who handle the process for them, and that’s where fees like ₦10k–₦50k+ come in depending on whether it’s a full service, bypass, or non-appearance package.

To clarify: ✅ Officially Free? Yes, the permit application itself is free.
✅ One-off or Yearly? It's not a yearly payment — once you get the permit, you're covered.
✅ Medical Report or Reason for Tint? That may be needed (e.g. for health reasons) and could cost extra.

Let me know if you want a step-by-step guide or help to apply directly.
You mean you didn't pay anything even when you went for biometrics?

All the people that applied for tinted permit that I know of paid most even used police officers.

Is it a requirement even for those whose tinted glass is factory fitted?
I've actually had to help a few people understand this recently — especially SUV owners who didn't know factory tint still attracts police attention.

Once you go through the legit process, you're covered. It's just that many people don't know where to start or what to expect.

If you’re genuinely curious about how to go about it the proper way, feel free to reach out — happy to share what I’ve learned from experience.

Rikze:

Yes, it’s a requirement — even if your tinted glass is factory-fitted.

According to the Nigeria Police, any glass that reduces visibility into the car requires a Tinted Glass Permit, regardless of whether it came from the factory or was tinted later.

The law doesn't differentiate between:

aftermarket tint film, and

manufacturer-installed (factory) tint.

If officers can’t see into the back seats or rear window clearly, they are allowed to stop the car and ask for a permit. It’s more about visibility than how the tint was applied.

That’s why a lot of SUV and salon car owners are getting stopped — even when they didn't install the tint themselves.

You don’t need a medical reason to apply. Non-medical reasons like: – factory tint
– privacy
– sun protection
– personal security
…are valid, as long as you follow the correct application process.

Truth is... it never really stopped.

It just depends on where you drive, the officers you meet, and how tinted your windows are.
Some people have gone months without any issues. Others get stopped regularly — especially in places like Lagos, Abuja, PH, and major highways.

One guy I spoke with recently got stopped at a checkpoint on 3rd Mainland Bridge — SUV with factory tint only. They asked for his Tinted Glass Permit straight up. No argument, no bribe... he just showed it and moved on.

So it’s not about when they’ll start harassing. It’s more like “when you drive into the wrong patrol unit without your papers.”

A lot of people are just now realising the permit process isn’t as complicated as it seems — if you know the right way to go about it.

Anyway, let’s just say I’ve had to help more than one confused SUV owner lately 😅

😂 Omo, I get that a lot.

But no be jazz — I just followed the proper route.
No middleman, no “oga for office,” no sachet bribe. Just legit application, correct timing, and small patience.

Most people think you must use a police officer or "drop something" at biometrics, but that’s usually because they don’t know the official process — or they meet officers who assume you don’t know it either.

Once you show up like person wey sabi wetin he dey do, the story changes.

You aren't correct about company registered vehicles. It doesnt ask for your CAC documents which would have been the more logical way to do it but we don't use logic, we use the path of most pain.

It requires you to input your company Tax Identification Number which then populates the form with the details of the company and if you no longer use the number or email on file with FIRS then you will not receive the OTP to continue and you have to visit FIRS to update your details!

At a point, I was just going to remove the tints than go through this nonsense with the police but I remembered the hot abuja sun and continued the process
Bro 😂 you just summarised the Nigerian public service experience in one line:

> “We don’t use logic, we use the path of most pain.”

And you’re absolutely right about the company vehicles. That TIN-FIRS OTP wahala has humbled many.
The system should just ask for CAC docs and let you upload — simple. But no, we must suffer small before we’re allowed to be lawful citizens 😅

I’ve seen people almost give up and yank off their tint — until that Abuja sun reminds them who’s boss.

At the end of the day, once you fight through the madness and complete the process, it’s worth it — peace of mind on the road >>> headache at checkpoints.

Easyinfoguide:
Excellent questions — let’s break everything down clearly:

---

💵 1. Is There a Registration Cost?

Yes and No.

The official online application for the Police Tinted Glass Permit is free on the Nigeria Police portal.

However, you will likely need a medical report or valid justification for having tint — this can cost around ₦3,000 – ₦10,000, depending on how/where you get it.

If you hire someone (an agent or facilitator) to handle everything for you, they may charge ₦20,000 – ₦50,000+ depending on whether it’s a “non-appearance” deal (where you don’t go for capture) or full legal process.

---

🔁 2. Is It a One-Time Payment or Yearly Renewal?

✅ The permit itself is a one-time registration.
Once issued, it doesn’t require annual renewal — unless the government makes changes in future (which hasn’t happened yet).

---

🚘 3. Is the Permit Tied to Just One Car?

Yes, it is vehicle-specific.
The permit is issued for one particular car. So:

If you own multiple cars with tinted windows, you must apply for a permit for each vehicle individually.

The application requires the vehicle details (e.g. plate number, VIN, chassis number), so it's not transferable.

---

If you like, I can also send you a simplified guide that explains each step, what documents you need, and how to avoid issues during police checks.

Let me know!
Thanks a lot for the update. These information are sufficient. Thanks again.

Nigerians are not registering it because of the process and its too complicated. Nigerian don’t like stress history have shown and most time do things last minute when the whole thing is about to expire. Like bvn, nin, voters card etc. the police need to learn. Nigeria is a country where most big men will rather pay for someone to do something for them.

The police should come up with something very easy and convenient before Nigerians will take this thing serious.

They don’t need to wait for days and do data capture at their command everything can do done online. Even mobile monie bank are doing everything online including capturing on their apps. The reason mobile monie is now popular is because every one can register easily. There are AI and software that recognize face, finger prints even voice.

Opay, moniepoit, kuda and all others are doing 100% registration and data capture online. What is there again the police cannot implement online? You submitted nin then you can capture face which can be manually check for verification. All these processes to attract additional money, stress and corruption.

Why will tinted registration takes days and need to go to command to do capturing when they can do it online and make payments to get a print out. Jamb is doing it on their portal.

Right now Nigerians prefer giving out 1k to every police checkpoint than to go through those processes.
I like your argument

UPDATE: New Steps & Lessons from My Tinted Glass Permit Application (June 2025)

Just a quick update for those still navigating the tinted glass permit process in 2025.

After going through the full process myself (and helping a few friends with theirs), here are some extra details that might save you stress:

✅ Application Timing
Submit your documents early in the week (Mon–Wed) to avoid weekend delays. The system sometimes delays approvals if you apply on a Friday or weekend.

✅ Pending Status? Don’t Panic
If your portal shows “pending” after uploading documents, it’s normal. Mine took 2 days. Just make sure you print and carry your Application Code slip when driving.

✅ Medical Report Tip (for medical reasons)
For those applying under “medical reasons,” a simple report from a recognized private clinic or general hospital works — especially in Lagos. Your report should state why tint is medically advised (e.g., eye sensitivity, photosensitivity, etc.). Keep it simple and clear.

✅ Company Vehicle Registration?
Yes, company-registered vehicles can apply. But make sure your supporting documents (RC, insurance, etc.) match the company name exactly.

✅ Mistake on the Portal?
If you made an error or uploaded the wrong document, you can still correct it by resubmitting. But sometimes, it's best to reapply with a new email if it’s stuck.

---

Hope this helps someone. The process isn't perfect, but it's way better than running into issues with the police for tinted windows.

Feel free to share your own experience or ask questions — we learn from each other.

Nice post.

@baratech, solid observation.

I’ve actually had to go through this process myself for personal use and for helping a few folks recently. From experience:

✔️ The actual portal is free, but you’ll still need to sort out things like: – Medical report (for medical reasons): ₦3k–₦10k depending on where you go
– Printing/scanning/NIN linking
– And of course, the wait time after application can be confusing if you’re not familiar with the steps.

For anyone going DIY, it’s doable but a bit technical — especially if you're dealing with Lagos or Abuja offices.

That’s why I put together a detailed walk-through guide that simplifies the whole process (from the online application down to the follow-up steps and red flags to avoid). I didn’t want to clutter the main post, but if enough people are interested, I can quietly share the outline or a clean version.

I also help review documents (medical reports, pending statuses, etc) — so if you’re stuck, feel free to ask. I don’t mind helping with clarity, especially now that the process is stricter.

@vivalavida, you’re absolutely right — that ₦14,200 shows up for almost everyone who applies, regardless of the reason selected.

But here’s the real gist: ✔️ The POSSAP portal auto-generates that same ₦14,200 invoice for all categories — even if you select “factory-fitted,” “medical,” or “security.”
✔️ What actually determines your final processing and approval often comes after payment — during document upload and internal screening. That’s when your reason and supporting docs matter most (e.g. medical report, proof of factory tint, etc).

Many people don’t realize the ₦14,200 fee is just the beginning — and depending on the state or officer in charge, other “hidden” steps or delays may pop up.

That’s part of why I compiled the full steps (and real-life examples) into a guide — so people don’t get stuck or end up paying multiple times unnecessarily.

If you need clarity before you proceed with payment, I can share what to expect depending on your state and tint reason. It’ll save you time, trust me.

Just look at all the work that so called Nigerians, have to go through, like many other things, to get tints on a car.

It is making some people feel accomplished, like they are going to write jamb and collect their result. Like it's an NYSC work or change an engine job.

Look at what they call a so called country. Nothing is ever straight forward, or made to be helpful to the citizens and visitors. Every sane and legal task of action, is always a tedious, time consuming, directionless, and lack of help. To get tint, is like cult initiation. Igbos, how is this a serious functional country?

In normal countries, if your tint is less than the national percentage (the lower the percentage, the darker the tint). In America, and places like brazil, it is 30 to 35% or more, only official or approved private security, can have less than that.

The website is not working, why can't anyone go to ekelebe station and ask, or read at the public board, or pick up a pamphlet, giving you instructions on how to go about a process Onstead of doing hear say, whereby, a criminal ekelebe on the road can shift the goal post, because there is no clear guidelines that are known to anyone interested.

Igbos, this is an example of a limited growth country. Nothing is clear. You buy a land or shop for business and do everything they use mouth and paper to tell you --- you do them--'then any one can come and meet you with another hurdle to cross; same thing in education, same thing in anything that are seamless in a matured country. Now tell me, how can such a country grow. Everything is planless

✔️ If your name is on the car documents but your wife is the main user, you can still process the permit in your name and hand over the papers for her to carry while driving.

✔️ If you won’t be available for biometrics, then yes — there’s a legit “non-appearance” route that some officers allow, depending on your location and supporting documents. It's not officially advertised, but it does happen (quietly).

A few things will help smooth the process:

Clear car ownership proof

Valid NIN

Reason for tint that’s easy to justify (e.g. medical or factory-fitted)

I recently compiled a full step-by-step guide that breaks down how this works — including non-appearance, agent use, and real examples from others who’ve succeeded.

If you're seriously considering that route, I can point you in the right direction.

Easyinfoguide:
That’s an unfortunate but very common experience — and you’re not alone.

Here’s what typically happens in Nigeria:

Many people try to apply for the tinted glass permit legally online, but the Police Portal often has issues: failed uploads, pending status that never updates, constant “error” messages.

Out of frustration, they walk into a police office, only to meet someone (sometimes at SCID or AIG’s office) who quotes them ridiculous amounts like ₦40k, ₦50k, or more — often for a process that should be free (except for legit documentation like a medical report).

---

Why this keeps happening:

1. The portal isn't fully reliable, and not all officers are trained to assist applicants through it.

2. There’s poor awareness about the actual procedure and legal steps.

3. Some officers exploit that confusion to make people feel they must pay heavily or use a "connection."

---

Here's a Better Approach:

If you’re still interested in getting it done without being extorted, I’ve put together a PDF info-guide that shows:

✅ What documents to prepare

✅ How to use the Police CMR portal without getting stuck

✅ What to do when it’s pending

✅ How to apply for free or at minimal cost

✅ How to spot and avoid overcharging officers or fake agents

It’s already helping a lot of people — I can send you the details if you’re interested.
My post was in the past tense.
