Kano Asks Nigerian Govt To Pay Compensation For Cancelling Durbar Festival by Ofunaofu(op): 3:59pm On Jun 08, 2025
The Kano State government is demanding compensation from the Federal Government for cancelling Durbar celebrations for two consecutive years in Kano.

Alhaji Tajo Uthman, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, made the demand on Sunday, when the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, paid the Sallah homage to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the Government House.

According to Uthman, the state had suffered huge financial losses due to the suspension of the annual cultural event, saying that it traditionally attracts local and international tourists.

He explained that the Durbar is recognised by UNESCO as a heritage event, stressing that during the festivities, Kano generates substantial revenue from both foreigners and visitors from across the country.

The commissioner stated that the economic impact of the cancellation has been significant enough to affect the state’s annual budget.

“The Federal Government must take responsibility for the economic impact of the cancellations and compensate the state accordingly,” he stressed.

He added that it is time they demanded reparation for the losses incurred and called for the immediate resumption of Durbar celebrations in the state, describing the cancellations as regrettable.

If true federalism operates in Nigeria, who cares how Kano people would celebrate their Durbar or employ Islamic sharia criminal justice system?
Tinubu campaigned for decades for return to true federalism.

The sense of entitlement is just too much. Their understanding is that they can command and get it done

Tinubu didn’t 'face' anyone, in case you don't know, he cut deals behind closed doors. That’s why the country’s broke while his inner circle keeps cashing out. If that’s your idea of bravery, maybe we need more ‘cowards’ like Obi who actually understand governance and accountability

And as for Ojukwu, at least he fought for something greater than his own pocket. Can your hero say the same?
