The officer should have released the phone for them letter lunch attacks on Thier location subsequently when armed, this is the result of double standard in Nigeria, military headquarters harbour criminals around it and little has been done to deal with those criminals therefore taking lifes of even senior officers. Soldiers are not wired to be subservient. An average military officer would rather fight to the finish or even "pass" than surrender to a gun-wielding civilian.

If a trained soldier at the level of a lieutenant is killed by an common criminal/hoodlum, wonder what the fate of ordinary Nigerians are who are left battling with zero to no security of lives and property everywhere

This is reappearing when the government refuses to deal ruthless with such acts such as the one demonstrated against the poor police officer in one of the northern states. Even against people of faiths different from theirs. It won't stop if drastic decision is not taken once and for all. Our officers have been killed , not by bandits, not on the war front nor on the line of duty but by one i*rres*ponsible untrained thug. Its an abomination I must say.

So someone would just come to you abd demand you handover your phone and you would just hand it over,without him pointing a gun at you?
Even with gun pointed,a military officer of that rank can and should believe he can overpower any assailant.
So let's not start acting righteous or holy here like the man acted f oolishly.
Lots of men would have acted same way he did,even when it's a knife and it's just one person trying to dispose you of a valuable possession.

If you are ambushed by hoodlums or Armed robbers, just obey!
Your life is too precious and important than whatever items they demand.
