The only checks and balances we have right now is that election after 4 years. Take for example this regime. Tinubu and Akapbio and Kekere-ekun are all in bed together. There is no presidential, legislative or judiciary oversight, like it should be in a healthy system.

Allowing them to now run unchecked for single term of 6 years....is akin to military rule. That was the reason we fought for democracy, to fire bad politicians at the polls.

THIS IS THE MOST UNDEMOCRATIC IDEA EVER MENTIONED IN NIGERIA.

I agree, but single tenure rule will make it worse. They will just do on your marks ! set ! go ! And loot us into oblivion.
You think giving Yahya Bello 1 tenure of 6 years would have prevented him from looting ?

1-Impeachement by state house of assembly was to check governors excesses, its now relegated and archaic and hardly used.

2-Second tenure is also a checks and balances oversight. We all know it takes Gods intervention to lose a second term election from a ruling party. Thats why all the PDP guys are defecting to APC. So that has also failed.

3-Single tenure fixed would put the last nail on the coffin. We might as well just go back to military rule, because at that point there will be no form of oversight or checks and balances.

Almost everything in life has its merits and demerits. I believe strongly that the merits of a single term tenure for political office holders are far more than its demerits. As Makinde highlighted (using his own personal experience), a lot of time is wasted on preparing to win a second term. 5 years should be enough for anyone with great ideas to turn things around!
