The coalition government between the NPC and NCNC was plagued from the on start by mutual mistrusts . The senior northern NPC which controlled the executive through the PM position was trying to wrest the near absolute power Azikowe and his NCNC had on the army. The likes of the Sarduna had come to realize too late the imbalance in Nigeria's Military especially within the officer cadre and was carrying out mass recruitment drive in northern secondary schools to redress the imbalance. The Sarduna only began paying attention to the Military after it became known through the constitution that the powers to appoint who heads the military lied in the hands of the President and not the PM. The position and powers of the President had been broadened and expanded by Zik after sucfesfully getting Parliament to remove the British Monarch as the ceremonial titular head and expand his powers from Governor-General to Sovereign Head of State as the President. The position held by Zik had changed when Nigeria became a Republic in 1963 with Zik now having more powers as the Head of State unlike his previous limited and mostly ceremonial role as Governor General. As the President, Zik now had full and absolute discretion in making some appointments without recourse to both Parliament and the senior coalition partners in the NPC who held the PM position. One of many such positions was the appointment of who will head the Nigerian Army and Police. Zik had cunningly got others in Parliament to dump the Queen as Ceremonial Head of State so that he can assume the position towards ensuring he gets to appoint solely whoever he wanted in such positions. Other than the Police and military, the appointments of VCs and Rectors and Permanent secretaries, ambassadors now came under Zik's exclusive sole responsibility. Note that at this time, the Nigerianization policy was still ongoing and the relics of the Colonial era were still holding their positions. One such prominent position was the British Maj. General who as at 1964 was still heading the Nigerian Army and was tasked with nominating his succesor. Major-General Welby-Everard had nominated three of rhe most senior officers to Azikiwe in descending order of whom he thought was most and least qualified to head the army. Brigadier Maimalari was both the youngest in age and lowest in rank but the British Maj General had him on the top of the list as the most qualified for the job citing his brilliant and stellar military career compared to his superiors. Zik , will rather choose the least qualified in the form of his fellow Ibo , Ironsi whom the British Maj General wrote the least of. Zik, had now abused his new powers to push his ethnic agenda. The Nigerianization policy was now being seen by others especually northerners as an Igbonization agenda with Zik doing all in his newly expanded powers to place his fellow ibos in vantage positions of power. During the 1964 federal election crisis, the President and Prime Minister jockeyed for control and loyalty of the army. In the heat of the crisis some of Ojukwu’s colleagues alleged that he approached them with a plan to overthrow the civilian government and replace it with a military government. The matter was reported to the army’s then commander Major-General Welby-Everard. Nothing happened as Zik stepped in to ensure Ojukwu did not face any internal disciplinary action or criminal prosecution for sedition and treason. |

Powers in Britain had a hand i seeing that the over radicalised leftist ideologue , Ojukwu was not thrown out of the army after the Senior Ojukwu reported to the British government that his Oxford trained son had joined the army as a recruit . Normally, the likes of Ojukwu was dangerous for any army as he was too political and had already become radicalised on campus in Oxford into communism. Ojukwu was however not thrown out of the army but was converted to the officer cadre by the British colonial govt. The seeds of communist sedition was being planted in the Nigerian military by the outgoing colonial government and this I believe was all orchestrated by MI6 which at that time was headed by Baron Victor Rothschild. Victor Rothschild had been implicated but never mentioned until years later after his death as the 6th man in the Cambridge 5 Spy scandal. Cambridge and Oxford had been indoctrinating and recruiting grounds for future communists. All the 5 spies convicted for spying for the Soviets attended Cambridge when Victor Rothschild was in attendance undergoing a post graduate degree in Botany . Ojukwu, like many Zikists of that era, had undergone Marxist indoctrination in universities in Ibadan and in the west. Victor Rothschild was the sole owner of the Rothschild Shell Petroleum which had passed on to him following his father's death. The civil war was deliberately instigated using useful idiots in the Zikist movement for the sole reason of ensuring Nigeria's oil wells fell under exclusive control of Rothschild Shell through war debt accrued from dumping antiquated and excess WW2 weapons to prosecute that senseless war. Note that Britain was bankrupt at this time following ths end of the second workd wae and loss of their colonies. The civil war was meant to recolobize NNigeria throigb war debt . The banker and oil man, Victor Rothschild was the sole beneficiary of that war and he achieved it by putting his useful idiots in place to cause chaos. After the war , Nigeria fell into debt and the oil all became Rothschild's property. |

Truth is Ojukwu was part of the January 1966 Gen Ironsi coup When Maj Chukwuka his assistant and Major Anuforo went to arrest Lt Col Pam in his house he requested time to change from his pyjamas and while he was in his bedroom he quickly phoned Gen Ironsi his boss for help as armed soldiers had come to take him away from his house Infront of his wife and kids Lt col Pam in the last phonecall of the last hour of his life must have sounded like " Oga Ironsi sir, these armed soldiers are taking me away please help me I sense very great danger" Elizabeth Pam was standing next to Pam and heard the entire conversation Gen Ironsi response shocked them both to their bones "Is that so' ok I will send help " was Ironsi's response Until Maj Anuforo despatched Lt Col Pam to meet his maker Gen Ironsi sent nobody The first soldier who turned up in the Pam residence hours later was Gowon and nobody sent him he went to get Pam so they could put down the Coup together that was when he knew what had happened But if we put all Tribal Politics aside can you just imagine what it means for a soldier to desperately appeal to his own commander to save him in the last hour of his life and for his own commander to turn his back on him at that very last moment? To call it betrayal is a great understatement that alone is enough to make an Army loose a War |

Depriest2020:It was Gowon that reported the coup plot being instigated and planned by Ojukwu and Banjo to the then British Maj General. Here is an interview of Gowon published in Vanguard detailing how he went and reported the matter to the then most senior military head. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/01/ojukwu-banjo-conceived-what-could-have-been-first-coup-in-1964-gowon/ |

Depriest2020:Gen Ironsi did all he could to cover up for the Coup plotters so much information was deliberately suppressed and that is why the Second part of the Police investigation into the Jan 1966 Coup is still missing . Gen Ironsi even sent away the British CID Police detectives that were investigating the coup because he knew they had already picked up his involvement in it and you know the North was very unhappy with what had been done to their leaders |
| Re: Ojukwu Was Investigated And Reported For Planning A Coup In 1964 by DomPerignon(op): 11:56am On Jun 15, 2025 |
Christistruth02:Here is Gowon's account of Ojukwu trying to instigate a military coup on the behest of making Azikiwe supreme ruler: “I don’t know why people keep referring to the so-called rivalry between me and Ojukwu. There was no question of rivalry between us at all. As young officers in the army, our relationship was exceptionally good. We were very friendly. The only time that anything happened was in 1964 after the election, when Zik sacked Balewa and Balewa sacked Zik. That was the time that probably you can say certain developments led me to give a warning, because there was this question of some of the senior military officers between Banjo and Ojukwu, urging the military to intervene on behalf of Zik. “Of course, I listened to their presentations and what I thought they meant was that there should be military intervention led by us the senior officers at the time: With David Ejoor as the GSO 1, as the Senior Staff Officer, and then myself as Adjutant General of the Nigerian Army and then Ojukwu as the Quartermaster General and then Banjo as the head of the electrical and mechanical engineers. “Now, four of us: Ejoor from the Midwest, myself from the North, Ojukwu from the East and Banjo from the West. So if you have four of us from the four regions of the country at the time saying that we are heading a change on behalf of Zik, and not the government, what does that mean? So, I warned, asking: “Is that what you meant? Count me out! God help anybody who starts any such nonsense.” |
| Re: Ojukwu Was Investigated And Reported For Planning A Coup In 1964 by DomPerignon(op): 11:59am On Jun 15, 2025 |
More from Gowon: Afterwards, I went to see our commanding officer, a British officer and told him he should get all of us senior officers and brief us on whom our loyalty belonged. Yes, our loyalty belongs to the government. Zik is part of government and Balewa is also part of government. So when you start talking of starting something like that in favour of one particular person and not the whole government, there would be problems. “So I asked the GOC to call of us and discuss. And I can assure you that I did not mention any name. No name was mentioned but he called all the senior officers to be briefed on the correct thing to do, which he did and made contact with the Inspector General of Police Mr. R. Bovell and the Attorney General and all the legal people to be able to define what our loyalty should be. And of course, we were briefed on what our loyalty was. And so, probably that stopped the possible first coup in Nigeria. |
| Re: Ojukwu Was Investigated And Reported For Planning A Coup In 1964 by DomPerignon(op): 12:09pm On Jun 15, 2025 |
Christistruth02:You can see from Gowon's account how Zik had began to see his office higher than that of the PM and had attempted to dissolve the Balewa government by sacking the PM to which the PM sacked Zik back. Now fastfoward to how Orizu and Zik refused to swear in the deputy PM who was next in line and was a northerner in the NPC. Instead , Zik and Orizu decided on their own to hand over to Ironsi. From Gowon's account and how Zik betrayed our constitution and democracy by handing over to Ironsi and the previous cracks in the coalition government, you don't need to be a genius to see that Zik was the architect of the Jan 15 coup and the failed Ojukwu coup earlier in 1964. Zik used his powers to ensure Ironsi replaced the outgoing British Maj General and from there the plot was set to overthrow the government. |

By 1964 AWOLOWO was already in jail for planning a coup . Bein investigated for planning a coup and actual sentence for planning a coup , which is treasonable felony. Awolowo, then the leader of the opposition and head of the Action Group (AG), was arrested and charged with treasonable felony. He and several of his associates were accused of plotting to overthrow the federal government of Prime Minister Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. The trial began in 1962, and in November 1963, Awolowo was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in prison. The evidence used against him included alleged plans to import arms and train revolutionaries in Ghana (under Kwame Nkrumah), though many have argued that the trial was politically motivated |
| Re: Ojukwu Was Investigated And Reported For Planning A Coup In 1964 by DomPerignon(op): 12:20pm On Jun 15, 2025 |
kettykin:Its obvious that Awo was framed to get him out of the way. Zik mistakenly saw the north as easy to deal with . The change to a Republic with Zik as now Head of State was all ochestrated to ensure all sensitive positions in the military , police , universities(VC) and civil service (Perm Secs) were now under exclusive discretion of Zik as HoS. Zik even sacked Balewa as PM and attempted to dissolve the government . Gowon has since stated that Ojukwu approached him and Ejoor to overthrow the government towards enthroning Zik as sole president . Do you think Zik could have gotten away with all his rubbish starting with changing Nigeria to a Republic for the sole reason of transforming himself from Governor General to HoS if Awolowo was in the picture ? Awo was the first victim of that coup and he was taken out in a conspiracy laced set up 5ys prior in 1961. |

kettykin:The Awolowo coup was a set up to get rid of Awolowo Wasn't Akintola the Premier of the West assassinated just 2 years later? There is a type of Tribal Politics that believes in wiping out the leadership of rival Tribes if possible so as to dominate that other Tribe because it is difficult to dominate a Tribe with it's leadership intact If Awolowo was truly a coup plottter why was Ojukwu so eager to claim credit for his release and why did Gowon release him? It was because they both knew that an injustice had been done to Awolowo they didn't utter a word about the circumstances of the coup again because they knew it was fake |

kettykin:Judges in Nigeria are too easily bought with favours Awolowo's judge publicly declared that his hands were tied after a plea for clemency. Do you know that a Judge once visited Fela in Jail just to beg him for forgiveness after he had sentenced him? It was a massive scandal at the time This is the story https://www.google.com/amp/s/thenationonlineng.net/an-apology-and-its-crisis/amp/ |

Christistruth02:Its obvious to me now that the constituinoal amendment in 1963 that disposed the Queen of England as HoS in place of elevating Zik from Governor General to HoS wast to ensure all sensitive positions in the Nigerian security, civil service , judiciary were headed by those Zik wanted in place. And if you go back in time you will find the most impatient people back then demanding an acceleration of the Nigerianization program were all in Zik's camp. This is why the same Zikists were the most violent prone independence aggitators who were ready to deploy violence against the colonial government. A Zikist was even arrested for attempting to assassinate the British Governor General Now you must understand that independence meant different things to the 3 major tribes in Nigeria . The north was never colonized rather it was a joint rule with the British who allowed the existing Fulani civil administrative structure to continue . Unlike in the southern regions, northern Emirs still controlled tax collection and sharia courts were maintained separate of the British courts. The Emir of Kano had an annual pension paid to him by the British government that amounted to €9,000 a year while still being allowed to keep half of the tax revenue in his realm. Contrast with that of the Oba of Lagos who was paid a stipend of just over €200 annually despite an earlier agreement that he be paid a tribute percentage of all goods passing through Lagos ports . No monarch in the south was allowed to set or collect any tax rather it was done directly by the British and the customary courts of the Obas had been stripped for British courts. With this in mind you will see why the north wasn't ready for independence and also saw it as a reason to continue their halted jihad further south. In the western region, the Yorubas wanted the British out so that they can regain dignity of self rule . As per the ibos, they saw the colonial estate which they served diligently as their bequeathed inheritance. To them, independence simply meant replacing the outgoing British govt with an Ibo one. And Zik's antics proves this. Ojukwu's insistence of having the present SS part of their rogue Biafra even despite deep reservations from the minorities not wanting to be part of Eastern Nigeria and Biafra proves the colonial mindset the IBO inteligentia had inherited from their colonial servitude. |

DomPerignon:We know this and also within less than a year in Office Gen Ironsi's boys struck with full confidence but do you also know that Gen Ironsi was not even supposed to be the head of the Army, the Head of the Army was supposed to be a Calabar Officer Called Wellington Bassey who was over 3 years Ironsi's Senior Officer Wellington Bassey had commanded the independence day parade and it was he whom the British had been preparing to takeover the Nigerian Army but after the British left Azikiwe as coalition Partner in the National Govt literally went after Wellington Bassey's life just to make way for his kinsman Ironsi to takeover the same Army |

Zik had ensuted no seccesion clause was inserted in our constitutiin at independence. Same Zik had attended the inaugural OAU General Assembly and his first assignment there on his own prompting was to present and get a charter signed by all then existing members to see each others inherited colonial maps as sacrosanct and inviolible Guess what that charter will come to haunt Ojukwu and his biafra when no African state except Senegal recognised Biafra. Zik thought by replacing the cerebral Yoruba nationslists with a pro northern Akintola who was openly anti ibo like the Sardunna he had won Zik's foolishness and myopia is what you are ll crying and lamenting today kettykin: |

DomPerignon:He was almost assassinated during the Jan 1966 Coup but escaped by the skin of his teeth just by a few minutes Col Basseys promotions were deliberately delayed through manipulation of Azikiwe in order to make sure Gen Ironsi could overtake bassey to head the Nigerian As soon as the British who had been preparing Col bassey to take over the Head of the Army Position left Nigeria, Azikiwe made sure Col bassey was abandoned in a Captain's Post for years at Zaria depot. It was after the Jan 66 Coup that Ironsi now promoted his own Senior wellington Basset to Col at the same time as Ojukwu instead of making bassey a Gen, meanwhile bassey joined the Army when Ojukwu was only 3 years old as was over 10 years Ojukwu,'s senior in the Officer Corp Do you know what wellington Basseys only offence was? bassey was from Calabar!!! It took the intervention of Gowon who became the head of State and whom wellington bassey had helped to recruit into the Nigerian army in 1954 when he was already an acting Major for bassey to be finally be promoted to a Brigadier General Do you see Tribalist nonsense that was going on even in Azikiwe's Eastern Region? Col Basseys promotions of at least 10 years were deliberately withheld to make sure Ironsi his junior by over 3 years overtook him There is no single evidence that Azikiwe tried to lift a finger to protest against Basseys deliberate marginalisation until after Ojukwu had overtaken Col bassey to be appointed as the Gov of the Eastern Region. Do you know the Worst thing Col bassey was completely Anti War!!!!!! Imagine how many lives would have been saved if Gen Ironsi did the right thing and had at least made bassey his senior in the Officers Corp the Premier of the Eastern Region instead of the Warlord Ojukwu who was over 10 years wellington bassey’s Junior officer ?!!!! From Azikiwe's own Publication "Origins of the Civil War" You will also notice that Azikiwe was completely uninterested in wellington Basseys plight Until after Ojukwu had turned his back in Azikiwe after Ironsi had made Ojukwu the Gov of the Eastern Region Region ahead of bassey who was Senior to both Gen Ironsi and Over 10 years Ojukwu’s senior in the Officer Corps

Christistruth02:And the same Ojukwu had the effrontery to be talking about following military heirachy . Why didn't Ojukwu protest on behalf of Wellington who Ironsi had been promoted above ? Why did Ojukwu not remember military heiracgy after Ironsi made him Military ruler of Eastern Nigeria instead of Wellington? Also ,I did quick search here on Wellington and read the usual lies by one of them (Njoku) defending why Wellington was denied promotions and command. Njoku claimed Ironsi was more "educated" despite Ironsi not attending any university in his life. What yardstick they used in deterning how more educated Ironsi was to Wellington only them can provide. Also, Njoku who has been deemed an inept and failed soldier even claimed in his book that Wellington could not be trusted to command a Brigade and that he lackrx leadership skills - all traits that Njoku was know to fail misreabley at . These people hypocrisy is in their blood |

Birds extraordinaire on the beat. If you follow them, you'll be misled. Benue people are dying today in large numbers and one of them in power is doing nothing. Tomorrow they'll twist it and accuse Igbos for being responsible for the killings. Today, they're accusing Azikiwe for jailing Awolowo and forcing Akintola on the West. No single mention of the NPC who were working directly with Akintola and had the political power to run Nigeria at the time. How easy and so convenient it is for them to lie against Igbos at every point in history needs to be studied. There's no single fault they've pointed towards Ahmadu Bello or Balewa... it's all Zik, Ironsi and Ojukwu's fault. Fast forward to 1970, Ironsi is dead... killed, Ojukwu in exile and Zik- out of political power, yet Nigeria slided more into poverty. Igbos have ever since been out of power or political influence in Nigeria but when discussing how low Nigeria has fallen, these same mongrels will tell you it is the fault of Igbos. Every reader should judge for themselves I have proofs to counter all the lies in this thread but I'll wait for now and watch them dish out more lies first. No need to rush. Meanwhile, Yorubas are silent as genocide is being carried out against Middlebelt Christians. Igbos won't stick out their heads for anyone again. We have learnt from history. Yesterday, 130 Tivs were killed gruesomely by Fulani terrorists but no one is talking. Even the all sainty Gowon is silent. He has lost his voice. The killers are well known and named yet everyone is quiet. Igbos won't speak out for anyone again. Let the Nigeria they all love speak for them. |
