Sacrifices of the Men & Women of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

They are not well honored for their service, dedication, and the risks they take to protect the nation and its people, even sometimes get enough recognition.
These sacrifices are particularly notable in the ongoing fight against insurgency, terrorism, and other criminal activities, where many have lost their lives

CAS REAFFIRMS CIVILIAN PROTECTION IN STRATEGIC VISIT TO OPERATION FANSAN YAMMA

In line with the vision for a mission-ready and people-focused Nigerian Air Force (NAF), the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, has reiterated the Service’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding civilian lives and property. This was emphasized through a high-level strategic visit to Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Sector 2, led on his behalf by the Chief of Civil-Military Relations, Air Vice Marshal Ibikunle Daramola, to reaffirm the priority of protecting civilians in the ongoing fight against insurgency and banditry in Nigeria’s North West.

While addressing frontline personnel, AVM Daramola commended the Air Component for its operational successes, describing them as a reflection of the CAS’s transformational leadership. He stressed that every mission must reflect not just tactical precision, but strategic empathy. “The trust of the people remains our most potent force multiplier,” he noted, while highlighting the importance of credible intelligence from the public to neutralise criminal elements without unintended consequences.

The visit also reinforced the Air Force’s compliance with international humanitarian law and best practices, further affirming NAF’s professional excellence and dedication to responsible air operations. As the Service deepens civil-military relations and blends kinetic efforts with community engagement, the message is clear: protecting the people remains at the heart of every mission.

CAS ENGAGES US PARTNERS TO FAST-TRACK ACQUISITION OF AH-1Z HELICOPTERS FOR NAF

As part of efforts to strengthen the Nigerian Air Force’s operational capabilities, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, led a high-powered delegation to San Diego, California, for a Programme Management Review Meeting on the acquisition of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters. The strategic engagement, held from 9–13 June 2025, involved key representatives from the US Government and Messrs Bell Textron. The CAS expressed deep gratitude to the US for its strategic partnership, affirming the NAF’s commitment to a seamless and expedited procurement and integration process that will greatly enhance combat effectiveness and mission readiness.

The visit also took the CAS to Camp Pendleton, where he interacted with the United States Marine Corps' HMLA-367 and MALS-39 Squadrons—both central to the AH-1Z platform’s operation and maintenance. He inspected the helicopters firsthand and discussed best practices in operation, sustainment, and logistical support with USMC officials. The engagement was a key knowledge-sharing opportunity, equipping the NAF with insights necessary for successful deployment and long-term support of the AH-1Z helicopters.

Air Marshal Abubakar reaffirmed the NAF’s unwavering commitment to the effective utilisation of all air assets in the fight against terrorists, bandits, and criminal elements, with a focus on restoring peace and protecting innocent lives and property. He also extended heartfelt appreciation to the President and Commander-in-Chief, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his visionary leadership and steadfast support, describing the progress of the AH-1Z project as a reflection of the President’s commitment to enhancing national security.

Good development. However, are we not over focusing on strike equipment? We already have our ATAK T129 gunships from Turkey not to mention our Mil 28 gunships, are these new ones not an over kill? Shouldn't we rather enhance our troop and logistics carrying capacity?
I am not sure that with our current chopper-borne troop carrying capacity we are able to deliver 250 well armed and supported troops by chopper anywhere in Nigeria now. This would have been critical for reinforcing our forward bases when under attack or cutting off and annihilating fleeing ISWAP forces and bandits.
In any case, buying any equipment from a major geopolitical power like the US comes with the risk of them telling you where you may or may not use their equipment!!

Nigerian Airforce doesn’t operate the Mil Mi 28. I believe you were referring to the Mil Mi 35. Recently, there hasn’t been much footage of the Mil Mi 35 in internal security operations. Last we saw of them was when the airforce organized an open day event for civilians to know more about the airforce. I will assume the Mil Mi 35s are undergoing some serious maintenance or upgrades or possibly the Russo-Ukrainian conflict has halted the supply of ammunitions compatible with the Mil Mi 35.
About the delivery of 250+ personnel by air anywhere in Nigeria, we don’t use choppers for that. That’s the job of tactical lift aircrafts like the C-130 Hercules and the incoming C-295 aircrafts. And I believe the Nigerian Army is working towards acquiring more transport helicopters like the UH-1 Huey for its aviation unit to deliver troops and logistics on time, where needed without having to wait for the airforce.

It is the Mi35m we have and it seems the word around is lack of support because of Rus-Uk. This leaves a gap for the attack part of the rotary forces.

I've made peace with NAF not being an air assault force. It seems our defence planners don't fancy it. I'm not hoping for much, just at least half a squadron of medium lifters for SF ops

You've made a valid point here mate. I would say we are not over focusing on strike equipment, and there is nothing like overkill when dealing with terrorists, bandits, and other criminal syndicate.
We need to send a clear message.
You mean our Mi-35M gunships, not the Mil-28. Talking about the chopper-borne troop-carrying capacity, I think that should not be a priority for now given the current threat situation. Our ground fighting force needs all the adequate air cover they can get, both fixed-wing and rotary assets. For the Mil-28, we can get few for now for logistic roles, I think the NAF brass are just placing there priorities amongst scarce resources.

Sure sorry my mistake , I meant the Mi-35. Regarding the troops delivery the C-130 and C-295 being fixed wing aircraft can only deliver troops by ferrying them between airports, and can only delivery troops into battle by para-drop. What I was referring to was chopper borne insertion which is less complex than parachute drops. You rightly referenced the Nigerian Army's plan for the UH-1 Huey, that is exactly what i believe we need, at least enough to deliver 200-250 men in one swoop, a strategy that has been proven and in use since Vietnam.

Exactly the sort of choppers I was speaking about. However, given the current embargo on trade with Russia, we could opt for others in this class like the French Super Puma, which the NAF has operated in the past.

Good one by the Lads.

What we need now is to anticipate one of those their massed attacks against a large base and prepare a counter offensive to meet them head on, complete with motorised troops and armored vehicles. Catch like 300 to 400 of them massed in the open and just over run them before they can disperse. we need to give them a casualty count in the hundreds to act as a real deterrent.

I recall during the earlier days in 2013/14 or so when artillery or an air attack caught boko haram forming up around konduga (Bornu State)...it was a slaughter. The pix were on Beegeagles blog back then. We need a major victory like that again i tell you.
You should become a consultant to DHQ!!

They just attempted NBLC Baga with massed heavy attacks as described for over 2 hours....... And failed woefully.

God bless AFN for this win and more to come

The KUH-1 Surion. That helicopter has piqued my interest for a while. I think it will be good as NAF’s medium lift platform.
Speaking of helos, I wonder what is the progress on the NASENI made in Nigeria helicopter that was been in production for God knows how long now

Nigeria Must Fence Its Borders To Be Secure - Musa

Take away from the CDS's words: it's high time we start planning on how we erect fences on our porous borders. Like he said, the Sahel region is heating up on a daily basis. Entrenched insurgency driven by armed Islamist groups affiliated with al-Qaeda (JNIM) and the so-called Islamic State Sahel Province are attacking and taking over military formations and if this persists, Nigeria might be soon.

It's high time cattle ranches/grazing reserves should be established. The recent killings and attacks in Edo & Benue states between farmers and herders have become a recurring incident; the rate seems to be increasing in recent times. It appears the word FORGIVENESS is not in the dictionary of both parties; hence, the almost vicious cycle of attacks and counter- attacks
