Tension gripped Sunday’s All Progressives Congress North‑East stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe after delegates threatened to back former Vice President Atiku Abubakar if current Vice President Kashim Shettima is removed from President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 ticket.

The gathering at the International Conference Centre was intended to reaffirm support for Mr. Tinubu’s second‑term bid, but erupted in chaos when Zonal Vice Chairman Mustapha Salihu concluded his speech without mentioning Shettima. Video footage showed an enraged party member hurling a chair at Salihu as he fled the stage, while another delegate lobbed a plastic bucket in protest.

Salihu had told the audience, “We have no business not supporting this party with all the juicy appointments and responsibilities given to us by this government. I would want all members of the zonal executive committee to stand up so that we will do the proper endorsement, because it is the zonal executive committee that holds the ticket. We want to reaffirm and also adopt the endorsement earlier done by the national working committee, that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is endorsed to be a sole candidate for the 2027 election.”

The omission prompted a chorus of “Shettima! Shettima! Shettima!” and swift intervention by security operatives. “It’s an insult to the entire region that our own son, the Vice President, was not even mentioned,” fumed a Borno delegate. “This is a calculated attempt to sideline Shettima, and we will resist it with everything we have.”

Before the fracas, the governors of Yobe, Borno and Gombe—Mai Mala Buni, Babagana Zulum and Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya—had each voiced their backing for the Tinubu‑Shettima ticket. Governor Yahaya declared, “The North‑East is fully behind the President and the Vice President. Their leadership has brought renewed hope to this region.”

POLITICS NIGERIA learned that Despite that show of unity, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje’s closing remarks failed to quell anger. Though he acknowledged Shettima—“we are proud of his deputy, his Vice President, it is one ticket according to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”—many delegates remained unconvinced and chanted, “No Shettima, no APC in the North‑East.”

Several threatened mass defection to the Peoples Democratic Party. “If Shettima is dropped, I will personally lead my people to vote for Atiku,” warned an Adamawa chieftain. “We won’t be taken for granted.”

The meeting ended abruptly as dignitaries exited amid shouts and chairs being thrown. Outside, police deployed teargas to disperse hundreds of agitated party faithful. An eyewitness, James Abass, warned, “This is more than just a misunderstanding. It’s a sign of serious internal divisions within the ruling party that could trigger mass defections or the rise of a counter‑movement if not urgently addressed.”

A source familiar with the zonal working committee disclosed that all North‑East NWC members—except Mustapha Salihu—had formally supported Tinubu and Shettima. The lone dissenting voice, the source said, was Salihu himself, against four colleagues who backed the joint ticket.

Nigerians that always start a political race earlier before others often succeed in putting their candidate in power, but they are the ones that always produce the worst leaders.

I think it is deliberate. They choose the most incompetent candidate and start the campaign very early so as to use propaganda and noise to disguise the candidate as the best.

There was no noise about Yaradua until about a year to the election. He was not excellent, but he was a good president. There was no noise about Jonathan until about a year to the election. He was a good president.

That is simply Tinubu's penchant for "me and only me" politics and his tendency to use and dump manifesting. Don't forget, he changed deputies 3 times in 8 years as governor of Lagos? Kwankwaso is now the new bride that he intends to use and dump.

Anyways, Tinubu should change Shettima and kiss the Northeast goodbye. The Northwest are also cooking for him after the treatment of Elrufai. They are just being quiet about it unlike the boisterous Northeasterners. The likes of Ahmadu Bello, Nnamdi Azikiwe and Awolowo were once contemporary politicians. This is history in the making.

Tinubu cannot continue to undermine revered Northern politicians in a treacherous manner and think there will be no consequences. Atiku will be the biggest beneficiary in all these because any Northern vote lost by Tinubu is an automatic addition to Atiku. Why should the North continue to reject their own son for a treacherous Yorubaman?

Was he consulted before a whooping 29 billion was expended in refurbishing an almost completed house? From day one, Tinubu wanted to push Shettima out of the villa by sending him away to the middle of nowhere in a bugged apartment but Shettima is smarter than Tinubu. Tinubu is not a strong leader. He's just insecure with low self-esteem and the most treacherous till date. It wasn’t strength that made him change deputies 3 times in 8 years as governor of Lagos. It was insecurity.

Please, don't commiserate and get the culprits arrested and bring them to book. If it's in South South or South East, you will have erection and be decisive. No single individual has been arrested ever this madness started.

Tinubu also lost his base, Lagos and his state of origin, Osun. At least, Shettima won his State. Who should step down for who? Tinubu was grossly unpopular in the South as well. The North made him president. Forget that he has now become arrogant. That is the fact! Do you think Shettima will lose his state if he was contesting for President.

Atiku is also a son of the Northeast, and he was on the ballot! The number of votes Tinubu got in the North is as a result of the hardwork of Northerners, like Elrufai, whom Tinubu has now betrayed and discarded. The repercussions of that will be felt in 2027.

Most of us in south south will vote Tinubu against Atiku championed by the north. Obi is not in the equation at all cos he will only get his south east support. I have said it several times that the north can't support Obi to become president with the way he campaigned along religious line. The north will remain a battle field with Tinubu and Atiku. Tinubu will win south west convincingly and win south south with atleast 70%. Atiku might win the north by 60% but will get measerable votes in south west and south south.

Or they can make Atiku the vice president to Tinubu as a government of national unity. If Obi endorses the GNU with an agreement to vice Atiku in 2031, then Inec will not need to conduct election in 2027. We simply go for inauguration at eagle square.

Go ahead. Did you vote Atiku in 2023? Atiku still pooled 6.9m votes inspite of and not because of you. Northerners who ditched their own son, Atiku and gave Tinubu 5.6m votes are now having buyer's remorse. They will correct their mistake in 2027. You can go ahead and vote your Tinubu. Obi will still best Tinubu overall in the South if the election were to be conducted 10 times. The difference is that there will be no 5.6m votes waiting for Tinubu to come and collect in the North.
