APC Would’ve Lost To Atiku If Osinbajo Got APC Ticket – Igbokwe Counters Sanusi by ogododo: 11:19am On May 03, 2023
Special Adviser to Lagos State Governor on Drainages, Joe Igbokwe, has countered the former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, over his claim that Nigeria is worse off for not having someone like the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo as president.

Recall that Osinbajo had in May 2022, contested against the President-elect, Bola Tinubu; former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi and others for the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential ticket.

Lamenting how Nigeria would miss Osinbajo after the May 29 handover, Sanusi, who spoke at the virtual launch of a book: “Osinbajo Strides: Defining Moments of an Innovative Leader,” expressed hope that Osinbajo may still lead the country subsequently.

But Joe Igbokwe, a chieftain of the APC, took to his Facebook page on Wednesday to counter the former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria.

According to Igbokwe, the ruling party would have lost the February 25 presidential election to the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, if Osinbajo had clinched the ticket.

He wrote, “Enemies of APC are talking. If Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu had not been on the ballot, APC would have lost to Atiku’s PDP by 12 noon on that day”.

He said the whole truth.
Atiku is biggest politician after buhari in the north, pdp said this many times.
Shettima and atiku got almost the same number of votes in borno and yobe combined. That's the base of Shettima.

So if apc candidate was not a strong politician like tinubu, many of those voted for apc would have put their votes for atiku.
Even apc would not have gotten that amount of votes in the south.

Sanusi the former Emir lol wants to start projecting himself to the public after hearing that the emirate issues in Kano State will be reviewed. And the best way is by making controversial statement in order to draw attention to himself. Sanusi knows the obvious truth. At Least he has started getting the attention he wants but he should be careful because Ganduje can still deal with him being Tinubu's right hand man. cheesy

The truth is that tinubu would have worked against APC and that will result to failure. If the election were to be free and fair, some people who voted for obi will have simply vote for the vice president.

Osinbajo will come third if he was the one on APC ticket.

—Atiku will come first

—Peter Obi second

—Osinbajo third

Osinbajo won’t still get up to 10% in the South East even if he is on the ballot.

If Awolowo with all his brilliance and notoriety couldn’t get that, who the hell is Osinbajo for you to think the people that voted Obi will vote him?

The only region Osinbajo can win is the SW + Kwara. Outside the SW, he can’t win any single state if he were to be on the ballot for that election.

I’m pretty sure Tinubu won’t work for him in that scenario, so Osinbajo will just be left to supervise his own defeat. Buhari can’t even save him too.

I think this is a good analysis.

If Osibanjo had won the ticket he would have won all the Southwest states including lagos, probably only getting an extra 500k - 1million votes than Tinubu.

He would also have won Edo, Kwara and Kogi. He'd win Benue and Plateu and at least have got 25% in Abuja.

The game changing state, Kano would have been a real issue. He would have come a distant 3rd in that state which would have scattered the winning formula for APC (i.e eating the core northern vote). He would have done far worse in the core North than Tinubu and unfortunately Atiku would have rode to an easy victory as the only region Osibanjo would have dented votes that Atiku got would have been the North Central.

Obi would have also come a very distant 3rd as only his clansmen and the South South would have voted for him He would have won not one single state out of this sphere and done worse in the South South as a whole than he did in this election. Wike too would have probably written Rivers result for Atiku, as he would have seen no need to fight PDP when it was clear Atiku would win the core north unfettered.

Osibanjo would have only had a chance to win this election if PDP had done the right thing and given it to a southern candidate (i.e Obi or Wike).

Its funny how things play out but Tinubu's ticket seems to have been a masterstroke for a poorly performing ruling party and the only way for a Southern presidency against a popular Atiku.

Though maybe if Atiku had won against two Southerners, that half of the country would have realised the importance of taking elections far more seriously and strategically and stop limiting themselves with emotions.

I like your analysis but I doubt Osinbajo will win Edo and Plateau.

Pleateau have always most times gone with the Ibos especially when you have an Ibo man on the ballot. As poor as Azikiwe performed in the 70s, he won Plateau states in those election. Peter Obi would have defeated Osinbajo in plateau.

In Edo state, Osinbajo will lose it to Peter Obi because the hatred is not only for Tinubu but APC. Some other heavyweight for APC in Edo state wouldn’t have even supported him and there will be anti party.

But he will win Benue, Kwara, and maybe Kogi (not sure).

Like you opined, his low performance in the North will be what will grant Atiku victory. Tinubu margin of win in the North West alone was enough to cover Atiku margin in the rest of the 4 NW states he won.

Osinbajo would have done better in most Southern states than Tinubu . i believe in all 6 south west states, benue, plateau , taraba, nassarawa, edo, fct (11 states + fct) , his performance in the SE when compared with Tinubu would have been a marginal improvement. he surely would not achieve 25% in up to 24 states
His performance in the NW will be close to disaster. NE wont be much of a difference. He would have achieved about 7 million votes with almost half of that from the SW.

For the majority non Hausa Fulani tribes that make up Plateau I do not believe their is a special affinity to the Igbo. What motivates them is to ensure that they are not "ruled" by the Hausa Fulani grand plan, especially if it appears to be islamic.

Osinbajo being a Pastor would easily win their sentiments. Also APC have a sitting governor their so it would have been far easier for him to sell the ticket. Father Alia doing so well in Benue should show anyone how deep some MIddle Belt states can take religion.

As for Edo, their people have no deep seated issue with APC as shown by how well APC did in the Legislative elections. Their problem is with Tinubu as a character and also the islamic one ticket angle. Pastor Osinbajo would have easily beaten Obi in Edo with Oshiomole and co backing him.

I am not sure being Igbo was the reason anyone out of the SE and SS voted for Obi i.e. it did not give him any additional benefit. It was the Christian angle "the defender of the faith"...I mean as he said, his only hope was turn the election into a "religious war", but that largely failed in the SouthWest.

4GET THAT SHHHHT TALK.THE ONLY REASON THE TICKET WAS ISSUED TO TINUBU AND NOT OSIBANJO IS BECAUSE THEY WANTED SOMEONE WITH THE HEART TO RIG ELECTION AND NOT SOMEONE THAT WILL COME AND PREACH TRANSPARENCY.THE VICE PRESIDENT IS AN HONOURABLE PERSON AND WOULD NOT INDULGE IN ANY ACT CAPABLE OF DECEIVING THE PEOPLE AND THAT IS WHY THEY DID NOT PICK HIM.

I mentioned Plateau because in 1979 if you remember, Awolowo and Azikiwe are born christians and if you measure it with their performance in governance delivery, Awo Trump Azikiwe and yet Azikiwe won massively in Plateau.

You may be right about Edo tho, it’s dicey and it could fall anywhere. No one can authoritatively say how it will go.

I won't bring myself to the gutter level of arguing with a favoured Almajari who was disgraced as CBN governor and also disgraced as a traditional ruler. A sitting CBN governor that was publicly antagonizing his boss the President without any fact. A sitting Emir of great Kano who was publicly antagonizing his boss the state governor for political reasons. If that is the type of people queueing up behind fake Pastor Judas Osinbajo, then I should distance myself from them.

Osinbajo has no machinery to win any Presidential election . He would have still relied on Tinubu machinery to win the election had he won the primary. The easiest of them all to be defeated by Atiku was Osinbajo.
If today Osinbajo contested a primary against Amechi. Amechi will defeat him with big Margin Osinbajo is not a politician

He was only hoping on PMB anointing oil to win the Apc primary which did not come

Replace Tinubu with Osinbajo in last election, Atiku would have won with bigger margin.

As at 1979, Zik of Africa was still far more of a popular name than Awo in most of the country. I believe the only non- Yoruba place Awo was popular was Benue and that would have been due to his previous history with Tarka.

Also though Awo took religion and to an extent christianity very very seriously, I am not aware he overtly campaigned with it like some people tend to. That's one of the reasons he was beloved by Yoruba across all religions ( traditionalists and Muslims included).
