FG Conducts First-Ever National Common Entrance Exam Into Technical Colleges by zero8zero(op): 5:32pm On Jun 17, 2025
The Federal Government has conducted Nigeria’s first-ever National Common Entrance Examination into Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Class 1, with a total of 29,256 candidates participating nationwide across Federal and State Technical Colleges.

This was announced during a monitoring exercise held on June 14, 2025, by the Federal Ministry of Education, marking a bold step toward repositioning technical education in the country. According to Dr. Muibat Adenike Olodo, Director of Technology and Science Education, who was represented by Mr. Kehinde Osinake, Deputy Director of Vocational Studies, the initiative covers all Federal and 32 State Technical Colleges.

“The examination recorded a total of 29,256 candidates across Federal and State Technical Colleges nationwide, with 22,995 applying specifically to Federal Colleges,” he said. She emphasized that the government’s goal is to equip Nigerian youths with practical and industry-relevant skills in order to reduce unemployment and shift the economy from consumption-driven to productivity-driven.

Importance of the initiative

The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), Dr. Aminu Mohammed, described the entrance exam as a critical policy shift. “Approximately 30,000 JSS3 students participated nationwide,” he stated. He noted that candidates will be placed in various vocational trades, including electrical installation, tailoring, and solar maintenance, based on exam scores and aptitude assessments. “Skills acquisition is not merely paper qualifications but holds the key to national economic growth,” Dr. Mohammed said. He added that successful candidates would be given starter packs and granted access to Bank of Industry loans to enable them to establish small-scale businesses or gain employment.

More insights

Dr. Mohammed revealed that the Ministry, under the leadership of Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, is planning to transition future entrance examinations to a computer-based testing (CBT) format. The results of the 2025 entrance exam are expected to be released within three weeks.

The Federal Ministry of Education has urged parents, teachers, industry leaders, and development partners to support this new direction in education. The entrance exam marks a key move by the Federal Government to institutionalize TVET as a core path in Nigeria’s secondary education system, offering young Nigerians practical pathways to economic independence and national development.

This TVET initiative is one thing I support wholeheartedly. It's time we left the purely bookish approach to knowledge. Everywhere you turn you see substandard structures and items which is partially due to poor technical skills. Majority of our artisans only learn on the streets, with many even struggling with basic arithmetic and measurement. If such people are given a window to access relevant techniques, we'll surely see an improvement

Very Good .... I so much love technical school . I think anybody going into engineering or any technical course needs to go to a technical school not a normal secondary clachool so as to improve their science practicality.

Why? They should not turn the technical colleges to another academic rigmarole. Whoever is interested should be able to get in with very minimal hurdles / gatekeeping.

Nice one. Federal technical and science colleges are just the best. I was overwhelmed that the school is built mainly for practical and theoretical work. So many good physics and chemistry teachers. One in Ijebu imushin have nothing less than 15 mathematics graduate teachers. How will a student not perform very well when there are better hands to handle them. Thank God it's now free. It's just a pity I could not enjoy the free tuition and food there. My daughter will be rounding up soon.

Good development from FGN. The equipment meant for this purpose had been squandered. IBB supplied a lot of equipment for this purpose. Students meant for this category are struggling in Polytechnics and Universities. That stipend promised from government is also a booster.

They should let the waec be conducting or take control of NABTEB so that it can be generally acceptable abroad. Currently most of the institutions outside nigeria doesn't recognize/accept NABTEB.
By doing this,I think there will be changes in the way people view technical school as for the secondary school dropout.

Schools accept NABTEB, albeit not all. It's a good initiative.

That's it. Having a technical training should serve a basis and should be prioritized in admission requirements to engineering/ construction and other related courses...this will encourage more people to go the route of technical education. Another advantage is that even if you don't want to further to university yet, you are already equipped as a technician to fit in the industry.
