President Bola Tinubu is expected to depart Nigeria for Saint Lucia on June 28 for official engagements and private leisure time.

Philip J. Pierre, the Caribbean prime minister, announced the trip at a pre-cabinet press briefing on Monday, according to St Lucia Times, local media.

“Two of these days, June 30 and July 1, will be dedicated to an official visit, with the remainder of the trip set aside as a personal vacation for the president,” the prime minister said.

“I believe that the visit of the president of Nigeria represents a unique and historic opportunity to deepen the bonds between Africa and the Caribbean.

“As descendants of a shared heritage, the people of our region trace deep links to the African continent, particularly Nigeria.

“These long-standing cultural and historical connections compel us to continue nurturing and expanding our partnerships with Africa in ways that are meaningful, strategic and sustainable.”

Pierre said he has extended invitations to all heads of government of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to visit Saint Lucia during the official leg of Tinubu’s trip for formal talks.

The OECS comprises Antigua and Barbuda, the Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines—all small island states.

The discussions are expected to explore avenues for cooperation in economic development, education, infrastructure, and diplomatic exchange.

Tinubu visited Paris in April for a two-week “short working visit”.

The president’s trip to the Caribbean Island comes amid growing outrage in Nigeria over a spike in deadly violence that left nearly 200 people dead in Benue on June 14.

It is very commendable the Caribbeans are making moves to integrate with their African root under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.

It should be a week-long visit to Benue, Nassarawa, Plateau and Niger with attendant reforms such as total ban on open grazing. Only this will help citizens, not a worthless visit to countries under visa ban!

While Nigeria bleeds, Tinubu books a beach.

Insecurity is at an all-time high, inflation is choking families, and more Nigerians are dying than in actual war zones and yet Tinubu’s priority is sunbathing in Saint Lucia? Apparently, that’s the reward for doing absolutely nothing while your country burns. This isn’t leadership; it’s elite abandonment at its peak

chisomkachy:
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s first supplementary budget includes a fleet of SUVs for himself and his wife, a presidential yacht and the renovation of his villa amid a cost-of-living crisis for some of the poorest people in the world.

The proposal — which seeks additional funding beyond the annual budget approved by Tinubu’s predecessor — comes as the government asks Nigerians to persevere through pain caused in part by a raft of economic reforms ushered in by the new president. Africa’s most populous country faces rampant unemployment, soaring food prices and a plummeting currency.

Federal lawmakers approved the president’s request for extra spending on Thursday, but eliminated the provision of 5 billion naira ($6.01 million) to buy a presidential yacht. Instead, they doubled the allocation to a student loan fund to 10 billion naira, according Abubakar Bichi, chairman of an appropriations committee in the House of Representatives.

The lawmakers approved 1.5 billion-naira proposed to purchase SUVs for the office of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu — an amount larger than that allocated to many individual federal colleges. The supplementary budget also proposes almost 6 billion naira to purchase SUVs for the presidency — more than the amount initially allocated to fund a student loan program for poor families.

When the PM of St Lucia visited Aso rock a few months ago to see Mr President, he specifically requested Mr President to visit his country to enhance the African bonding and ancestral affinity. Very good of Mr President to reciprocate.
