Honchoslim16:Nope. The only issue is, they might crow at odd times...like 2am when everyone is sleeping. ![]() |

I lost my Fulani Chicken I bought for 4k naira yesterday due to illness. It was painful losing it. My chicken coop is 50% completed. With good housing, managing chickens during this rainy season should be easy. |

kay29000:The best way to process corn chaff from pap is to treat it like garri. Sun drying will not kill all the microbes and worms in the corn chaff 1. Seive it in that board wire mesh net they use to seive garri... (Use big plastic seiver .. the type they use to drain water from cooked rice, if you don't have garri siever... Just wipe the clogged pieces through the seive with some force, everything will go through) 2. Fry it in pan... As if frying garri. (If you don't have pan, use big pot over gas, but it'll take time if the quantity is much) It's totally safe to use after frying with heat like that It'll turn out like grounded guguru after the frying. oweniwe:LMAO! This reminds me of one stunted growth rooster I had for a while...no one wanted to buy it. Even though it was small, its crow was very loud. One night, I couldn't sleep cos I was just thinking of how it is disturbing my neighbors. I prayed that night for solution, and I woke the next day to a knock at the gate. Some landlords in the area came to talk to us in the house, and one of them bought the chicken, I was so happy ![]() Another time, I had two big male noilers that used to crow back to back, so loud. I started taking them out of the cage and locking them in one short cupboard overnight. They have to stand to crow, and they can't stand in that cupboard, so they couldn't crow |

Osanoghodua1:Well done sir, You seem to have find a way to scale the business. What do you think is the most challenging aspect of this business. I am currently constructing a housing to accommodate my chickens. |

After months and months of looking for a way to kill the notorious cats that have been killing and feasting on our chickens, we finally got one of them. The mother and son duo really wrecked havock on our small poultry farm. One night reminded me of the movie The Ghost and the Darkness, where two lions were terrorizing a community in Kenya. These cats killed a total of 8 of our small chickens in one night.

After killing the cat, this new mother can peacefully walk around with her 6 new chicks.

kay29000:Awwwww! I'm so happy for her.☺️ I hope the wicked mother of the wicked wild cat hasn't come back since then. |
| Re: My One Year Journey Raising Local Chickens by kay29000(op): 5:31pm On Jun 16, 2025 |
Mariangeles:Nope. No trace of her so far. I hope it remains that way, cos the hens are back to reproducing rapidly. Two other hens are currently sitting on their eggs now, and their eggs will hatch by month end. The rate at which chickens reproduce still amazes me. It's so beautiful to watch. |

| Re: My One Year Journey Raising Local Chickens by kay29000(op): 10:01pm On Jun 16, 2025 |
50JBL:I made a scarecrow with a stick and some of my old clothes. It's in the center of my compound. |

OP, which breed(s) of local hens/roosters would you recommend? I want to start afresh. |
| Re: My One Year Journey Raising Local Chickens by kay29000(op): 12:48am On Jun 17, 2025 |
Rwshd:I don't know about the breeds of local hen. I just buy local chicken at the local market, feed them well and take good care of them. |
| Re: My One Year Journey Raising Local Chickens by Mariangeles(f): 6:44pm On Jun 17, 2025 |
kay29000:Has it worked so far? Have you observed hawks hovering around without snatching? |
| Re: My One Year Journey Raising Local Chickens by kay29000(op): 8:10pm On Jun 17, 2025 |
Mariangeles:Yeah, it has worked so far. They just fly by and don't come down once they see the scarecrow. But one particular juvenile hawk shocked me a few days ago. When the rooster made the sound of a prey from above approaching, I came out and saw all the chickens taking cover. And then I saw the young hawk on my roof, looking down. Usually, hawks don't stick around once they notice the scarecrow or a real human, but this young hawk stood there on the roof, looking down at the chickens. Even when I tried to scare it away by pretending to throw a stone at it, it didn't move. It eventually flew away after a couple of minutes. |
| Re: My One Year Journey Raising Local Chickens by Mariangeles(f): 2:46pm On Jun 18, 2025 |
kay29000:What does that one want again? Like they say, problem no dey finish. ![]() Would you consider getting a hunters gun to scare them off once in a while? About the rooster alerting the chickens, at first I didn't get that part, then I remembered you once wrote about it that that is what it usually does. It's just amazing. |
| Re: My One Year Journey Raising Local Chickens by kay29000(op): 4:31pm On Jun 18, 2025 |
Mariangeles:Yeah it's amazing that the sound the rooster makes for prey coming from the sky is different from the sound it makes for ground prey. I love when I hear the sound for air prey and I can't see the bird of prey, till like a few seconds later. The rooster is always super alert. |
| Re: My One Year Journey Raising Local Chickens by Mariangeles(f): 6:57pm On Jun 18, 2025 |
kay29000:Oh! So, it makes different sounds for air predators and land predators? I don't know which is more amazing; it making different sounds, or you observing and recognizing which is which. 😀 |
| Re: My One Year Journey Raising Local Chickens by kay29000(op): 11:35pm On Jun 18, 2025 |
Mariangeles:lol...I remember telling a girl about this, and she couldn't control her laughter after I started actually making the different sounds the rooster makes. ![]() |

newoffer:Okay. Crossbreeding is fine. I've been thinking of crossbreding local chickens with Noilers. Maybe in the near future, but for now I'd just prefer to keep them 100% local. |
