Kaduna State Tertiary Institutions Embark On Strike Over Poor Salaries by simonlee(op): 9:50am On Jun 19, 2025
The Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya chapter of the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU has called for a three day warning strike beginning on Thursday, June 19, 2025.

The Union and two other affiliate bodies, SSUCOEN and NASU are embarking on the industrial action to press home their two points demand which include, the immediate implementation of the 15 years old CONPCASS/CONTEDISS salary structure for tertiary institution. This is contained in the Schemes and Conditions of Service of NCCE, the regulatory body for all Colleges of Education.

The kaduna state college of nursing and midwifery, and Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic are also drowning tools to press their demands.
Non-implementaion of the 15 year old revised salary structure makes them the least paid lecturers in the entire country, with some earning as little as N63,000 a month.

The Union is also asking for a review of the Executive Order on 65 years retirement age for academic to include the non-academinc staff as contained in the Schemes and Condition of Service of NCCE, the regulatory body of all Colleges of Education in Nigeria without any punitive additional requirement.

The Union in a statement to its Congress Men and Women recalled the 14 day ultimatum issued by the Joint Congress of Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya to the Kaduna State Government on June 2, 2025, where the demands were made.

“Following the expiration of the of the ultimatum on 18th June 2015 without any tangible offer, it became necessary for the Joint Union to embark on a three (3) day warning strike starting from Thursday, 19th June, 2025 to Monday, 23rd June 2025.”

The Union called on members to adhere strictly to the directive, while reaffirming its commitment to ensuring synergy with the State Government, as it remains open to constructive dialogue with the hope of a swift resolution.

You see this Governor of Kaduna Uba Sani, just to sound morally correct has joined the bandwagon of hypocritical leaders all out to water down El-rufai's administration and it's achievements to look like a saint.

At least El-rufai moved the IGR of Kaduna from number 19 to number 4 rating during his regime.

His own focus is just Southern Kaduna to call a dog a bad name so it will hang it.

Hypocritical APC Governor.

To be expected.

Education budget is 120 billion.

We were here with abia state. Which gets derivation money. Why not Kaduna?

Either ...but Nigerians are poor. So , we have pity on them and tell them that the governor has access to one trillion dollars and soon the state university will look like the National University of Singapore.

But the governor's own is not scanty🙄... No na😮‍💨... Public sectors should be the ones actively obeying the Labour laws especially the minimum wage part of it to encourage some private employers to do same.

I agree with you, but even if we said that the governor should give his money to the university, it would be scanty still

The problem is, universities drink money. Either you charge high fees or run a government where half the income of all residents is collected as taxes in return for good services, university included, or you just forget about it

Education is not cheap, I know, but na salary I dey talk about for here o, abi no be the same state ministry of education and civil service dey draft budget go give Governor before he take am go meet the legislature? Abi them no dey reason the salary before them draft budget?

No wonder all these lecturers look for ways to earn more by piling unnecessary bills on innocent undergrads.

Nigeria is a ground for Labour Abuse and neo slavery.
The salary of a Senior Federal University Lecturer is 250,000 naira, while a WAEC holder who is a P.A to a politician receives 500,000 naira.
How can we reconcile that?

Kd government pays secondary school teachers and primary health care workers #80, 000 all on GL8/2.
Primary school teachers and LGA workers on GL 7/2 earn around 42k while GL8/2 earn around 45k monthly.
Fce gidan waya lecturer 3 lecturers do not earn up to 80k per month

Let us drop politics for a few minutes...and note that I do not endorse corruption in any form, nor am I excusing any government. Infact, I am talking about the main issue why ASUU has been on strike since 1992 self.

University needs money. If you tweaked the salaries of lectureres...and if you want them decent, a lecturer has to earn mininum 400000 naira tops....the budget would not carry it at all.

That's how broke Nigeria is, and that's why many of us blast government , every one of them when they take power. But the palava is, because fees are kept low, all universites have is government allowance, which is falling by the day because of low revenues, and because more universites are being set up all over.

See the problem?

Even the so-called focus on Southern Kaduna is just in the media. The governor has done nothing in concrete terms for the people of Southern Kaduna, let alone anywhere else for that matter. He's more focused on Elrufai, forgetting that no one will remember Elrufai for the things he didn't do, but rather for the things he did, which were a lot. Elrufai's shoes are simply too big for the incompetent Governor.

Tinubu is over there in Kaduna commissioning projects that are all legacies of Elrufai which he left at very advanced stages of completion. What an irony!

I thought KD been dey try o, especially with some of the projects I have been seeing. I know it's been ages since I was last there, but I have seen infrastructural improvements on the news from subsequent administrations, but that salary package below the minimum wage is what I am disappointed about. How can you pay someone 42-45k monthly fa? For public service wey no be POS operator? Na student abi na adult?

Firstly, let me say I wasn't talking politics, if I was, I wouldn't be replying especially you sef🤨.... I was just lamenting about the welfare of lecturers in KD.

Education, let me reiterate, 'quality' education doesn't come cheap I know, but please we've been pushing this 'Nigeria is broke' line for decades, whereas, what just 1 public servant can amass speaks otherwise. And I used the word servant because they are supposed to be there for me and you and not the other way around (go and check the meaning of democracy), but yet the ones supposed to check these excesses and do right by the people will be the ones to still shield the same 1 public servant, so that broke line is stale.

1 public servant loot can fund 1 public university for 5 years, and you and I know we have more than 1000 and I believe we don't have up to 1000 public higher institutions.

1 public servant loot can fund 1 hospital (not PHC) for years (depending on the loot)

1 public servant loot can power a small community

The possibilities are endless, if things are done RIGHT. But then again, this is Nigeria so what do I know🤷🏿‍♂️, but Nigeria isn't broke.

Loot cannot fund

1. Continuning maintenance costs

2. Upgrade costs

3. Cant' fund the things you have stated.

That's why stealing in Nigeria is worse than stealing elsewhere.

I stipulated time for the use of it, I didn't say it was going to keep funding it eternally 🙄... It's not static, so definitely they will be upgrade / maintenance costs but during the running period, they can be sourcing for other avenues for more funds/grants. And yes, public education is cheapest worldwide except for maybe religiously funded institutions.

Loot can be found if we really want to, and that means every Nigerian doing right.
*Modified*
And the way things are going, definitely there will still be looting in the future, so dare I say that the timeframe of the projects loot will fund will still be extending 😁😂🤣

Lol! The Ashawo Governor is busy chasing El-Rufai's shadows instead of focusing on Governance.

Uba Sani can not achieve half of what El-Rufai achieved in Kaduna State even if he rules for 3 decades.

El-Rufai was a privilege for Kaduna State. He made Kano State to start copying Kaduna.
Now, watch Kaduna playing second fiddle to Kano. Pathetic
