A compound with 20 tenants using one prepaid meter in 2025? Which backward city did this happen?
It has nothing to do with the city. It has everything do with the landlord. Some landlord are so stingy that they would do everything to avoid their responsibility.

You wan make tenants get meter at his expense in your house as if the tenant own the land n property.

I be landlord too. Wetin I do be say I tell dem to use their money to pay for the meter and deduct it from the subsequent rent.

Even with debt u can get a meter, there will be an understanding where the debt will be factored into the meter after u clear some part and u repay by subsequent recharge either by 50:50 percentage where the amount bought will be split into 2 or there will be a minimum payment u can not buy below.Like I said the MAF program free meters is only for Band A customers and I don't know if is still on but if is not then u can pay for a meter with the acc number of the postpaid then collect the money from ur rent which must be agreed with u by the landlord
I will confirm if it's band A but there's almost constant light sha. Lol as per the bold I doubt if that man will accept it. He's been giving different lamba every time I question him about meter. The man no dey like spend for him own investment at all. Maybe I go just bear am move out once this rent expires soon.

So, I'm in a jam right now.

I'm a student and also work online. So I decided to rent a new place last week. The major reason is that I need constant power supply.

In this area they use band A light.

But the problem is that other student occupants don't always pay for meter subscription.

Hence there is constant light but most times this particular house don't always have light.

Before paying for rent I actually asked one of the tenants, the person currently occupying the room I paid for and he actually assured me that the compound has no light issues.

So, when they gave them light a few days ago I decided to go and check the house myself and discovered they don't have light while other compounds have light.

I then decided to speak with another tenant and he started narrating the issue to me. In fact, for the last 3 days they've not seen light in the compound even though the street have had constant light.

That some tenants are even using ac, electric cooker and so on.

So when they recharge it doesn't stay long and worst some don't even pay. I was there until night when I saw one of the tenants, a lady going round to raise money they can use for subscription that night.

She didn't get a kobo from the over 20 tenants there. The compound is that big.

So, even if I say I want to sub for the prepaid meter, with 20 people I don't think N20,000 will even last for the month.

I made the payment but I'm yet to move to the house because the other occupants are still in the house.

Please I'm thinking of going to collect my rent back because I can't cope with this. How do I approach this issue please.
You have options

1. Go and collect your money back
2. Get your own meter ....which is the best solution
3. Everyone living in that house shoukd have card reader to monitor consumption by each person
4.Call a good electrician to install cut out fuse for each person...let him label each fuse according to the apartment . Now this is how it works ...if apartment A didn't pay ..his or her fuse will be removed At the end those that paid will enjoy the light ...This is what one of my friends gave been doing untill finally their landlord bought Meyer for each apartment

Mainland or island lagos?so I can know how best to advice you on the next step cz there's a MAF program for BAND A customers where u are entitled to free meter as long as u open a new account on the same address seperating urself from the other account.
Do you think he will get the prepaid before his rent expires. Those discos are fond of delaying Meyer installation

Don't request for refund. If you do, he won't give you. Na scope you go take collect am.

Buy a big calabash, put egg inside with palm oil, kolanut and pap. Add palm oil to it.

Put it in front of the compound.

If the landlord asks, tell him it's your belief and you have a fundamental right to practice it.

First of all, those tenants who don't pay for light will run away from the house. Poor people are usually superstitious.

The landlord will beg you to collect your refund.
Nigerians are so hilarious 😂 😃 😄 😁 Chai!

It's better to stay in a compound without meter than a compound where more than 2 people share the prepaid meter. U will always have issues like these.

What were U thinking? Just bear Ur cross or if U can manipulate it go to PHCN office and lobby for a separate prepaid meter in Ur name. I did that one time and enjoyed absolute peace of mind while the rest were struggling.
Im curious to know, are you allowed to remove your meter when you are about to vacate the premises?

Collect your money back if you want peace and look for somewhere else.
However if you like the place so much invest in solar inverter solution and be off grid.

if they ask some students in that compound now what their course of study is they will tell u (electrical engineering).

As you have payed its difficult to make the landlord move to prefer and effect solutions.

If the landlord does not give you the money, wire your house directly and be using estimate bill while you wait for your own metre

The worst thing you can do is share any utility bills with a Nigerian , they will not pay and if they pay small they will want to take advantage and abuse the service so they gain more than all other contributors
You see this is the ultimate very very terrible mindset we have.

Even those shouting wicked landlords here up and down will not contribute. I Kuku like as the landlord is looking at them.

1.It's not postpaid that they will pay 1naira out of 10naira and leave debt for landlords soNo outstanding for him to pay
2.If they like they should cooperate ,if they like they shouldn't, but Nigerians lailai.
3. Anybody not comfy can get his refund life is not hard like he said is it his duty to be collecting nepa bills.

Those saying he shd get a separate meter for each room are not realistic. For a flat yes , but not a student room which may be face me I face you that the total package excluding agency is 190k. You would have to share with someone at some point.

One major advantage of prepaid is it has saved lots of landlords from paying tenants left over bills.

Let them have their own separate prepaid meters.

Update

I'm just living the landlord's house and he had no problem refunding the money.

He doesn't know me personally and this is our first time of meeting.

After explaining who I was and the situation, he asked what I want and I told him I want a refund and he agreed.

He however told me he paid the agent 10k from the money as commission.

So, he could only refund the remaining 190k. He took me round to the agent house to collect the other 10k but the agent was not around.

He then told me I might be wasting my time because the agent probably has spent the money and won't refund without extensive trouble.

He's not even picking his calls. Sha. I got the bulk of the money back and I'm grateful.

So far, I've lost about 36k in search of a house. God abeg.

Also, he asked if it is his duty to collect nepa bills I told him I don't know but somehow it's spoiling the reputation of the house.

He actually seems nice and kind in a way and I kind of regret putting him through the stress and the house is kind is really great.

But me no fit joke with light.
Rent of 200k, which kain house be that?

Some people dey try oh

Never ever stay in a house were people share a Meter. Or better still tell the landlord you want to buy your own Meter if you can afford it bare in mind it's yours to carry along if you decide to move later.

It is terrible situation. This is why residential building for rental business is no longer worth it in this generation.

Better to build shops or corporate business building for banks to rent than build house for tenants to rent.

The wahala is too much. Anyway, I would advise you to look towards solar setup that will power you laptop and few other things when you finally rent house and forget about light.

Maybe also get small solar generator in situations when it rains and there is no sunlight to power your stuff up during raining season
So shops and banks don't owe rents? you definitely are not properly informed.

There's also a private meter that can be installed for each tenant if you can't buy prepaid meter for all off them.
The private meter costs less than 15,000 naira.
