So sad. Some of us who never had to think about school fees never knew how lucky we were...

Nigerian doctor shares a recent encounter with an ex-classmate of his from medical school who now hawks things to make a living.
The doctor identified as Dr. Cheta took to Facebook to reveal that from their chat, the ex-classmate had revealed that he had been the one sponsoring his own medical education.
However, he had to drop out at 500 level since he couldn’t afford to continue paying his fees, and had no support from anyone.
His words …

I just saw someone I went to med school with, hawking things at a park. The encounter shook me deeply.

I had no idea he didn’t graduate. 🥲

Back then in school, I was really quiet and shy, so I don’t think we ever spoke. I don’t even know his name. But he recognised me today, and we got talking.

He told me he had been the one paying all his fees and with little support from his relatives. He got to 500 level… and had to drop out. Life just got too hard. He couldn’t continue. 🥲

I’m still trying to process it. My heart feels really heavy right now.

The Hawker could have wished he never graduated
The Doctor may later wish he never became a Doctor(I pray never)

I tell ya. We take so many things for granted. Some of us would even be threatening our parents we'd drop out and they'll be begging us to stay in school

Well-said and very insightful. But we humans don't think like that. We operate on the basis of "all things being equal". All things being equal, the guy would have graduated and brought his work ethic to being a doctor and become a very successful doctor - all things being equal!

That's the heart-breaking part. 500 level!
Now I think of it, there has to be more to the story. One rich guy in his community would have paid his way, knowing he'd get his money back plus a doctor who'd be always happy to treat him😎

Could it be due to Psyche issues
If that's true, the he can be of help to restore the pathway again for him.
Meet with the school authorities to reestablish that connection and see that he graduates. Do that for him.

This is the sad reality for some.

That is why one of the programmes that this Tinubu administration implemented and which I am very satisfied with is the Student Loan Scheme. No Nigerian student should have to drop out for lack of ability to pay tuition fees.

He should have opted of a less demanding course like SLT, radiography or biochem

You can be critical of this government...but Nelfund is what we have never had.... Believe me. Nelfund is a very good government policy

This is so sad. Medicine is a very expensive course to pursue.

He shouldn't have kept the problem to himself. I am certain if he told his classmates and they informed their parents, one or two parents may decide to sponsor the rest of his education.

The problem here isn't that he could not afford his fees. The problem here is not asking for help from the right people.

If u get no helper in Nigeria,u can end up in d gutter no matter how brilliant u are.

This is a very corrupt society.

We can not all make it big in this life no matter how educated you are .

That's one of the ironies of life.
It's always a marathon.

Fact. You need to hustle thrice as much as you would in other countries of the world for you to keep your head above the waters in Nigeria.

This life is a twist!

The reality of life..

You must have finance to get degrees, certifications etc.. reason class of degree isn't the true measure of a student's worth.
Some are just going through a lot, doing all they can to survive while others have peace of mind with enough support from their families.
The outcomes of the two scenarios above will be different even though the student at a disadvantage might be far more brilliant than the comfortable ones performing well in class

In summary.. life no balance.

Abegi. Story story story on Nigeria air space. 500 level and drop out? If you do ejor ejor, they may let you continue but seize your results. At least give you time to do business and gather the money to pay up. Maybe the guy no pass and had to withdraw.

Sometimes it’s better to defer admission for 1-2yrs and work for your school money, save and then proceed to school. Especially in course like Medicine where you can’t successfully work and go to school. 2years behind your mates is not the end of the world, you may even advance more than them and be more successful in the end.

He dropped out due to financial reasons not academic issues.

Now that you know that he did not graduate due to lack of sponsorship, are you willing to sponsor him back to Medical school

This is also very true. Some people will rather die in silence than ask for help. I was once like this (I still am to some extent) but I soon realised that nobody cares if you die in silence. If it will help my health, finances or career progress, I will beg if I have to, even if you mock or reject me, at least I will be satisfied that I tried my best.

This is really saddening! God will stand up for him again and send helper for him to finish up, he must be a very brilliant guy to have gained admission as a Med student in the first place.

It's unbelievable what people are going through in this country!

This type of challenge was one of the reasons I supported President Tinubu’s student loan program. I hope it works.

The guy that weed my plot of land when I want to build my house is a millionaire today. My house cannot stand beside his mansion and fleet of cars.

Nigeria is a land of possibilities. A wretched hawker can wake up tomorrow morning and buy you and your hospital
