First, I am no fan of dictatorships. They are of the past.

But the problem in the Arab world is that minorities are far safer under secular dictatorships than they are when the dictators are gone (unless it is Lebanon, where at least 40% of the population is christian). Syria is a classic case. So long as the Assads...who were alawites (muslims, but some mainstream muslims regard them as heretics)..were in charge, they protected many minorites. But once gone, trobule starts. Same thing in Iraq.

Thats due to the Syrian war, a part of the Arab spring, where a lot of Islamists groups were running large parts of Syria, and as such many christians ran for their lives. Before 2011, christians were safe under the Assads, and were likely to support the Assads

Keep in mind that the Assads are Alawites., who are a minority muslim sect that are regarded by some mainstream muslims as heretical . Also, many christians backed the Assads then.
