Really?
And the article I read completely avoided that part.

https://nvdatabase.swarthmore.edu/content/nigerians-protest-removal-fuel-subsidy-2012
They are not going to state it. The effects are telling today. Buhari should never have been president, and the subsidy should have been completely removed more than a decade ago. It is why to date, I don't consider anyone who campaigned and voted for Buhari in 2015 to be an intelligent person.

Mine:

1. Putting others before my life...while others actually put their lives first.

2. If you live in a public yard, you must understand that your neighbours aren't your emergency family members.

3. Avoid taking things on credit from shops close to where you live.

4. You really do not owe anyone an explanation when you say NO to their requests.

5. Learn to speak not talk.

6. You are the most important person to you in this world. Remember that.

7. Don't let them kill you!

8. Learn when it's apt to walk away.

9. Set boundaries. Whether they call it pride or whatever, they will respect you.

10. Overthinking will only get you sick. Start doing whatever you can.

11. You really do not need to recruit others to hate someone you hate with you.

12. Some relationships should be valued by you than always trying to be right always.

13. Drink clean water always. Eat good food. Sleep when needed. It's your health. If you can ensure your car gets sealed engine oil and better fuel for efficiency, how much more your body?

14. You don't need to lie to refuse lending money to someone; a simple "I don't have" is accurate. You don't need to attach a reason..damn it's your money!!

And it is also very necessary to collect collateral or they put it in paper. If they refuse, it's ok to let them fck off. A lot of borrowers have no conscience.

15. Avoid too many friends. If possible, avoid it completely. When your are becoming more successful, too many friends and you are closer to your grave.

16. It's not everyone you should bring to your house. This is very important.

17. Refuse binge drinking or eating outside. It's a one-way ticket to hell.

18. Ensure you know how to respond to peer pressure bullies.

19. Buy what you can afford...everything depreciates..

From an engineer to an auditor... chai Nigeria!
God has a way of redirecting us to what is best for us, only if we let Him. I would not be where I am today, if I was practicing engineering.
I have no regrets whatsoever leaving engineering for internal auditing. On the contrary, my regret is wasting time trying to pursue a career in engineering (that I most likely would have struggled in)

I think it is advisable to always put life changing opportunities ahead of relationship/marriage. You can always replace a partner, the person just have to be good & u can build life with them. But u see life changing opportunities, they hardly come again once u miss it.

Now you understand better. The universe is always teaching you.sometimes when you are stubborn to learn, the lessons repeat. The universe can even delay your progress just to make sure you are ready for the place it wants to take you to. Exactly! I was completely ignorant of the process. On the other hand, I kept hoping things would get better soon. Sadly, as the years progressed, things only got worse! Age was also another factor (40+) and not having a sibling in Canada meant I was disadvantaged in aggregate scores required for the cut off (ITA) - I had wasted too much time on the wrong track! Nevertheless I relentlessly kept seeking for a way out. Thankfully with my PhD + good IELTS score, I explored the PNP pathway - the saving grace! Friends I helped with their dissertation, home and away, during their postgraduate and even some I served with, during NYSC, and kept in touch with, were more than happy to help with the required funds! It's ALWAYS good to be nice to people, and to endeavor to periodically keep in touch with goods friends once in a while - you never know when you'll need them or vice versa! Be willing to assist if their request is within your capacity or at least offer some advice if it's out of your powers. It might just be your turn someday! Many of those who came through (especially the ones in diaspora) told me not to pay back the funds - it was a gift! I was shocked beyond words, even till date! I moved with family and it's been my best decision. Canada is welcoming to families with PR! I deeply regret the wasted years but I thank God !
Glad you were able to pull through! Congratulations

I did, and I'd say protest was valid, and the aim was (partially) achieved.

So, how did it affect you negatively?
Why do you regret being a part of it?
Don't you have the barest minimum level of intelligence to understand that he's feeling regretful to have participated in a uselss protest that helped bring in APC, Buhari and, now, Tinubu, who have wrecked the economy and unleashed insecurity and untold sufferings on the people??
If you actually took part in that evil protest that eventually gave the fulanis this upper hand they have in Nigeria today, you should be ashamed of yourself

I hate it when people stup!dly do things without first thinking carefully about its implications and consequences.

I really regret it, till I will leave this life, my ₦100 will never enter that app.

A long streak of success wrecked me.
That's not exactly true. What wrecked every one's chance is the mindless looting of our commonwealth by a few politicians and their cronies.

There is nothing wrong in wanting to go back to your home country after a spell studying abroad and the likes of Prof Olikoye Ransome Kuti, Dr Beko Kuti, their cousin Prof Wole Soyinka, MKO Abiola, Gani Fawehinmi, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Dr Chuba Okadigbo, Prof Pat Utomi, Dr Raymond Dokpesi and a host of other erudite Nigerians all went to study in Europe or America and came back to Nigeria and most of them were offered Top Middle class jobs by Government parastatals in Nigeria with Houses, Cars, cooks et all and good salaries.

In the 60's, Nigeria and other African countries went to the UK to head hunt Nigerians who had finished studying with juicy job offers complete with relocation packages back to Nigeria and a lot of our elders came back to Nigeria to start such good jobs.

So, you are not the problem for having a NATURAL desire to come back home. The problem is the corrupt politicians in Nigeria that refuse to let talented Nigerians breathe or survive.

Interesting. You were blinded by your past success. It made you ignorant to the non-existent safety net available in Nigeria. So you were just merely existing hoping that each day would get better or your former success will reflect in your personal growth and achievements. Anyways you can’t blame yourself, the environment played a major role. Now you realized time is your greatest asset. Most people never realized that even at 50. There’s still hope. How about starting a business venture? Try your luck there, it’ll be brutal at first but back to your original issue, be very aware that trying to benefit from the system (9-5, corporate jobs) you already made yourself vulnerable from the get go. You were always vulnerable even when you were in the UK. Cheers and I wish you the best.
You made some true assertions above. 9 to 5 will eventually lead to poverty ANY where in the world especially now that AI can do most of the office jobs at a fraction of the time and cost. God help all of us.

E be like say na to open one small mama put / beer parlour sure pass now o 'cos at least your daily food and drink is guaranteed at low cost and IF your rent is paid in advance for a few years, then you have some peace of mind to brainstorm for additional business ideas.

This one wey office workers for Lagos are now using their luxury cars for kabu-kabu to augment their inflation battered salaries, EVERY one of us has to start thinking outside the box to survive in this our dear country that has no safety net to catch anyone unlucky to lose their jobs in this climate.

But for the safety net in places like the UK etc, we for being learners when it comes to armed robbery and other violent crimes like muggings when compared to the UK.

But even if Nigerians pay into a Tax and National Insurance Contributions pot to fund a social security safety net for the unemployed, it will end up being looted by the greedy heartless Nigerian politicians.

If merit had a place in Nigeria, many Nigerians abroad won't be there. The weather, to start with is one thing I never came to terms with. Nigeria is cool, what messed us up is nepotism and corruption.

Imagine the case of a cousins Dad who had been abroad to study in the 60's, had his kids there, relocated back to Nigeria circa 1970, trained his kids to University level suddenly around 17 years ago when he was in his 60's decide to up sticks and relocate back to the UK to take up work in the health sector since his business (health related) in Nigeria could no longer give him enough money.

He did get a job almost immediately in the health sector in the UK but I know this was not what he planned for when he relocated back to Nigeria with his kids in 1970.

Nigeria has a way of mutilating the dreams and aspirations of its best minds.
