We don't even have land defense system.

Cows are as dangerous in Nigeria as missiles.
Re: Does Nigeria Have Air Defense System? by Bahamas95(m): 7:09pm On Jun 24, 2025
Israel is using air defense system for protection while we depend on the God of Israel for protection.

How do you explain this to your children?

Funny enough most people don't know our air force have defense system at least even if it's not so distracted but it can bring down aircraft

Yes we have air defense system. We have S300 bought from Russia back then but not sufficient enough for defending our territory

Wow.

You made alot of sense.

Kudos to you.

But i want to ask.... Cant Nigeria just still purchase defense systems, atleast just to boost of a well-grounded military attire or power?

Why exactly should Nigeria spend billions of dollars on cutting edge “air defence systems” in anticipation of Missiles from Who exactly?

America?

Britain?

Israel?

China?

Iran?

Who tori Olorun?

Who wants to drop Cruise Missiles or Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles into Nigeria?

Every country worth its salt has billions of dollars of investments In Nigeria, plus planned investments, from China to Russia to even Iran!

If we are talking of military ranking, Nigeria is 3rd in Africa after Egypt and Algeria.

In fact we’re 2nd. It’s not fair to add Egypt because they are heavily funded and armed by the US as a counterweight to Iran etc in that region.

Nigeria ranks a very respectable 31st on Earth, out of a world of 202 countries.

The Nigerian military ranks above Portugal, the Netherlands, Mexico, Argentina, South Africa, Morocco, Switzerland, Colombia, and many other countries. See link below to Global Firepower Index.

The military does not spend money on equipment for which there is no rationale.

Nigerian military spends big money on armoured carriers and such equipment for its most pressing issues - terrorists.

Iran military spends big money on air defence systems because her own problems are different from our own. She is facing Israel. Enemies.

Pakistan spends big on air defence systems because of India with whom they have endless problems.

But you can bet that Sri Lanka and Bangladesh next door to Pakistan Don’t have any big “air defence systems”.

Why? Because they have no threat or enemies to expect a cruise missile attack from.

So military equipment procurement is not about ‘bragging rights’, you children.

It’s about strategic procurement based on your current threats.

Does Nigeria or even black African nations have armies? Are we patriotic enough to build air defences for ourselves? Are we serious as a race or continent? All the answers to the questions is NO.
Re: Does Nigeria Have Air Defense System? by Babangidapikin: 7:14pm On Jun 24, 2025
cool I remember I passed one barrack dedicated to space and satellites in Abuja some years back. Anyway I know beyond fighting ourselves we no dey look for trouble... I wonder where that rocket some academia were building really his, I bet abandoned in some garage .. Truth his the game of warfare has changed. A $1000 device can be used to destroy $100million assets. We are going into knowledge warfare, good thing we are in a third world country where a guy called turji can be threatening a whole state. So technically we are still in the stone age, the only thing is that the Army procure monster looking vehicles, I guess to scared gullible citizens.. real warfare is getting smaller, it is David and Goliath out there and David would kill Goliath anytime. I do know for certain we have surface to air defense systems but mostly located in Abuja. I don't know if we have enough warheads to sustain prolong pounding. Nigeria is the only country most Nigerians don't know about, so it's a good place to hide secret projects.

Dont you think we need it for insurgency?
I mean, to tackle boko haram!
TenQ:
Simple answer:NO!

Nigeria does not have any single air defense system. Nigeria does NOT even have bunkers or air raid shelters for citizens during such events like this.

Strategically For now, we do not need it and if we have gotten it, it would have been OBSOLETE by the time it is needed!

You are correct!

Firstly air Defence is a very broad term. It covers everything from 20mm anti-aircraft guns designed to bring down low flying aircraft and drones to high end anti-missile missiles like the Patriot and other elements like you have in the iron dome.

In Nigeria here, our air defence system is focused on countering threats from aircraft attack, so we have various calibres of anti-aircraft guns, including some which are radar guided, like some her have rightly noted, we used to have a number of anti-aircraft missiles ranging from the smaller shoulder fired versions like the Russian SA-7 Grail, to the larger Roland anti aircraft missiles.

Like You have noted Nations arm themselves for realistic Threats. No need spending tons of Dollars on Patriot missile systems when the threats you face are only AK-47 armed insurgents. Even when you stretch your imagination, we have probably the best air defence systems among all our immediate neighbours.

Say that again and again. I hope we don't have international crisis with another country it may just take less than a week to dismantle Nigeria. In saner climes these herdsmen or bandits or terrorists or whatever name they're called would be taken care of in with largely drones.
Re: Does Nigeria Have Air Defense System? by jaymoney1(m): 7:26pm On Jun 24, 2025
Honestly, Nigeria does not currently have the advanced air defense systems like those used by countries such as Israel or Iran systems capable of detecting, intercepting, and neutralizing incoming missiles with high precision. Most of Nigeria’s defense focus has been on internal security threats like terrorism, insurgency, and banditry, rather than largescale external missile threats.
However, this shows the need for Nigeria to invest more in modern defense technology and strategic preparedness. In today’s world, where threats can come from anywhere, having a strong air defense system is not just a luxury it’s a necessity. Your concern is valid, and it's a conversation more people need to start having.

Good points, there. Personally, I believe we've been spending more than necessary in terms of defense spending. We can get same output with 70% of the cost. A big credit goes to Buhari for the unprecedented strengthening of Nigeria's military

Yes....I have attached a picture of our air defence in Nigeria. We are making progress and soon will compete with developed countries in terms of missile technology.
The future is bright for us. At least, we have started something

I agree we don't need to spend on air defence - at this time. What we need are well-equipped and modern special forces units (both military and police) that can track people in both urban and forests and mount decent search and rescue operations. We also need a decent fighting force that can tackle terrorists. Then we need a good border force.

Nigeria's current air defense structure is primarily managed by the NAF and relies on outdated systems. The country operates only 16 Roland II Short Range Air Defence (SHORAD) systems, acquired in the 1980s
