World renowned British author, Frederick Forsyth, was cremated and buried today in England, with Biafrans in attedance to support his family and friends. Frederick Forsyth wrote several classic novels such such as The Day of the Jackal, The Odessa File, The Fourth Protocol, The Dogs of War, The Devil's Alternative that have all been made into movies. He has sold over 70 million books worldwide. Forsyth started as a journalist for the BBC and was sent to cover the tumultuous events that happened in Nigeria in the mid 60's. He was in the Eastern Region when Ojukwu declared Biafra and stayed on to cover the war. He became close to Ojukwu and did his best to report to the outside world the horrors he witnessed inside Biafra, calling on the international community to help Biafrans with food and medical aid. He would later write the book "The Biafran Story" where he recounted his experience in Biafra. He remained a life long friend of Biafran's In 2020, during reflection of 50 years since the war ended, Forsyth wrote this in the popular Guardian Newspaper of London: Buried for 50 years: Britain’s shameful role in the Biafran war. A million children starved to death. I’m haunted by the images I saw there – and by the complicity of the Wilson government This referred to the civil war in Nigeria that ended 50 years ago this month. It stemmed from the decision of the people of the eastern region of that already riot-racked country to strike for independence as the Republic of Biafra. As I learned when I got there as a BBC correspondent, the Biafrans, mostly of the Igbo people, had their reasons. The federal government in Lagos was a brutal military dictatorship that came to power in 1966 in a bloodbath. During and following that coup, the northern and western regions were swept by a pogrom in which thousands of resident Igbo were slaughtered. The federal government lifted not a finger to help. It was led by an affable British-educated colonel, Yakubu Gowon. But he was a puppet. The true rulers were a group of northern Nigerian colonels. The crisis deepened, and in early 1967 eastern Nigeria, harbouring about 1.8 million refugees, sought restitution. A British-organised conference was held in Ghana and a concordat agreed. But Gowon, returning home, was flatly contradicted by the colonels, who tore up his terms and reneged on the lot. In April the Eastern Region formally seceded and on 7 July, the federal government declared war. Biafra was led by the Eastern Region’s Oxford-educated former military governor, “Emeka” Ojukwu. London, ignoring all evidence that it was Lagos that reneged on the deal, denounced the secession, made no attempt to mediate and declared total support for Nigeria. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jan/21/buried-50-years-britain-shamesful-role-biafran-war-frederick-forsyth

Okwyjesus:Remember to give honor and gratitude to Prof Wole Soyinka too if you truly show gratitude ![]() Or it because Prof. Wole Soyinka is Yoruba or his skin colour that will make you to forget him as not deserving of your gratitude? Those dressings are all 100% foreign dressing. Poor manner of dressing yet no single authentic African attire or dressing in the picture and that plum woman's dressing is awfully depressing for such event. Appreciate our Yoruba mothers who sent clothes too. May God console the associates and relatives of late Pa Frederick Forsythe.

Straw clutchers. Did Fedrrick not hear of how these same people were selling human flesh in the open in occupied Niger Delta ? Did Fedrick not later hear of how they were genociding minority people ? |

FreeStuffsNG:I wonder the kind of hook that is holding your wole soyinka from accessing tinibu and tell us his findings the way he promised Nigerians. He said he will Access tinibu after his one year in office and uptill this moment nobody has heard anything from him apart from his attacks on Obi. |

While the British government was arming Nigeria to bomb hospitals, markets and schools in Biafra… while millions of Igbo children were starved to death as food was deliberately blocked — Frederick Forsyth called it what it was: genocide. Not civil war. Not a complex conflict. Genocide. Sponsored by the same Britain that pretends to care about human rights today. He quit the BBC because he refused to be their mouthpiece for murder. While British media played dumb and sanitized the slaughter, Forsyth looked the empire in the face and said You’re not peacekeepers — you’re accessories to mass murder. He dragged the truth into the open. He exposed how the same country that preached democracy was supplying arms to kill children for oil. He watched Biafrans die in their millions and didn’t flinch or spin it into diplomatic bullshit. He reported it, raw and honest. We are not going to water this down and pretend his legacy is just about novels. Frederick Forsyth had more integrity in one article than the entire British media establishment put together. The rest of them can rot in their polished lies. Forsyth earned respect not for where he came from but for standing with the truth when it was dangerous, unpopular and career-ending. Rest in defiance, Frederick. You did what cowards wouldn’t. The blood you spoke for will remember. |

FreeStuffsNG:They should not forget Jeremaih Obafemi Awolowo too that did economic blockade that starved millions of children and women to death and at the end of the day took away every money Igbo had in exchange for 25 pounds worth remembering |

Britain dislodged Igbos from power in 1960 and not being done used bbc to frame 1966 coup as Igbo coup and still went ahead and fought Igbos in a war using Gowon and Awolowo to starve millions. The only grudge they have against igbos was the technological advancement igbos made in short while of coming in contact with them rattled them and they saw igbos as threat that can uplift entire black race and start challenging them. Since they dislodged Igbos Nigeria have been on downward spiral and getting worse each passing day |

slivertongue:Unfortunately true. For them it was about keeping Nigeria together, it was never about peace, unity or progress, which is why Nigeria has never had any of the three All Nigeria has had is being together, for no reason |

I read his book about the Biafran war. It was captivating and riveting. I also watched the Day of the Jackal movie as a kid. Awesome stuff. The film is about a professional assassin known only as the "Jackal" who is hired to assassinate French president Charles de Gaulle in the summer of 1963. Rest in Peace Sir. |
