Stefanos Stefanu, Secretary-General of Cyprus's left-wing AKEL party, has expressed alarm over increasing Israeli property investments in southern Cyprus, labeling the trend a potential national security concern. Speaking at the AKEL party congress, Stefanu noted that Israeli buyers are purchasing significant land parcels and strategic economic assets while also developing community infrastructure, including schools and synagogues. He cautioned that this could result in the formation of exclusive, self-sustaining enclaves. Echoing these concerns, AKEL-affiliated social media posts have employed charged phrases such as "New Israel" and "the new country occupied by Israel."
