FIRS Chair: New Tax Laws Won’t Be Implemented Until January by Bobloco(op): 7:29pm On Jun 26, 2025

The Federal Government has disclosed that the implementation of the newly signed four tax fiscal reform laws will commence by January 1st, 2026.

Addressing State House correspondents shortly after the President signed the bills into law, Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Zach Adedeji, said the modalities will be put in place ahead of the implementation.

Adedeji further explained that the six-month period between the enactment of the new fiscal laws is designed to give ample time to those saddled with the implementation to carefully prepare and ensure that all Nigerians are adequately sensitised.

According to Adedeji, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS by the signing of the bills into Law is now the Nigeria Revenue Service, explaining that the new law now defines the NRS’s expanded mandate, including non-tax revenue collection, and lays out transparency, accountability, and efficiency mechanisms.

“The Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, the third bill, repeals the current Federal Inland Revenue Service Act and creates a more autonomous and performance-driven National Revenue Agency.

“Two hours ago before we were FIRS, now we are Nigeria Revenue Service with expanded scope to focus on tax collection and with match efficiency.”

Chairman Presidential Committee on Tax Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, said President Bola Tinubu had directed proper implementation of the laws while ensuring collective participation of all stakeholders.

“The journey is just beginning; writing the law, no matter how beautiful, no matter how transformative, no matter how innovative, it means nothing if it is not properly implemented. So, we are mindful of that. We are not going to relax.

“Mr President has given us the charge that now is time to move to implementation, and we are ready. We are prepared. It is not something we can’t do alone, even from the government side. It’s something we have to be collective about.”

Oyedele added that the committee will now include the private sector, public sector, civil society, professional bodies as well as international partners.

“The private sector, public sector, civil society, professional bodies, etc? Tax consultants, everyone, including our international partners, who mean well will work for Nigeria.

These are 4 tax laws that will change the way the country's tax regime has worked for decades.

You can't just implement changes spanning huge agencies like FIRS, Customs, and all the other major revenue generating agencies overnight.

Reworking the various IT systems to work together in compliance with the new laws alone will take a long time.

Training thousands of government workers on the new laws and the systems nko.

I am even surprised they think they can do all these in 6 months. Unless of course they were so sure the laws would be passed, they started work on the changes at agency and ministry levels months ago.

Because the tax year in Nigeria is January to December. You wouldn’t know because you don’t pay tax

Government policies can take some time to reflect in people's lives, but within 2 years, I expect government revenues to start rising exponentially.

The question is whether the federal and State governments will spend the additional revenues in a way that benefits the common man.

Given the current evidence of many Governors not spending their increased revenues to benefit their citizens, there is no guarantee that additional huge revenues will not end up in Governors pockets.

The motive behind every policies of this renew shege has always been to raise more money for govt. Subsidy was removed to save money for govt, tax to raise more so as to have more money to share. No positive impact, increase poverty level, inflation and unbearable living conditions. Hope people will still be alive to witness the impact of these giantjatic projects that lie Mohamed said they are too big for ordinary eyes to see. That was how we waited for 8yrs of buhari reforms to start having impact but it only got worse.

Well na you Dem dey spoil country for not me , I will forever be okay , January is the roughest month for many after paying school fees and settling plans for the new year , it's never the best time to effect a new tax regime especially one that wants to increase VAT by 100 percent , well we will get there and you will understand what I am saying

No, this is direct opposite. Their being hesitant about implementing the bill is an indication that it will favor the masses. Anything that won’t favor the common man is implemented with the speed of light. A very common example is the price of petrol, we witness immediate change when the price is hiked but when it’s back to normal, marketers will be hesitant to adjust their pump prices accordingly. This is the sad state of Nigeria

Honestly, i do not understand the meaning or how the current tax works, the whole idea doesn't make any sense to me after reading every article online. I hope they will use the next 6 month to explain it to us like we are 4year old

Word is everybody that makes enough money to afford a second home abroad is fleeing the uk and many businesses are closing down cause the tax is too high. Nealry all the private schools have closed since vat was added to school fees.

Given its the same people running UK and Nigeria, and when white man sweat black man must bleed, i urge Nigerians to brace themselves for this thier tax bill, cause i bet everything they can not openly do with the terrorists working for them, they will try to do with tax bill. Tax bill as a means to fostering depopulation agenda.

Cause if you dont know, in the western world people pay almost 60% of thier earning in tax, they pay tax on salary, tax on savings through inflation, and tax on spending via vat.

With tax law they will turn Efcc into a more legally deadly force than thier depopulation agenda terrorists.

People are loosing incentive to start business or even work in Europe , when you know 60% of what you make is tax.

Since its same people the terrorists are working for bringing you this new tax law, i say brace yourselves
