FG Asks States To Reinstate Monthly Sanitation Exercise To Prevent Diseases by treesun(op): 9:12pm On Jun 27, 2025
As Nigeria prepares to mark the 2025 National Environmental Sanitation Day (NESD), the federal government has urged states that have not yet reinstated the monthly environmental sanitation (clean-up) exercise to do so.

Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, made the call during a briefing on the 2025 National Environmental Sanitation Day commemoration with the theme: “Safe Sanitation and Hygiene for Disease Prevention”.

He said the exercise is crucial in preventing sanitation-related diseases and fostering a sense of community responsibility.

The National Environmental Sanitation Day is usually marked every 28th June to raise awareness on issues of sanitation.

The minister represented by the Director Pollution and Environmental Health, at the ministry, Engr Dr Bahijjahtu Abubakae, said this year’s theme goes a step further than business as usual by emphasising not just the provision of sanitation facilities, but also the importance of managing them safely to prevent disease.

Lawal said sanitation related diseases cause morbidity and deaths each year, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

“A large number of children die every year due to sanitation and hygiene related diseases, and more than 3.5 million children suffer from diarrheal diseases in Nigeria. Children who are less than five years old are more prone to such diseases. These diseases can have significant economic impacts on individuals, families, and communities, including lost productivity, medical expenses, and reduced economic opportunities.”

He further said poor sanitation can also lead to contamination of water sources, soil, and air, leading to long-term environmental degradation.

The minister also noted that poor environmental sanitation is responsible for occurrence of significant percentage of preventable communicable diseases particularly in developing countries including Nigeria.

The minister said Sanitation is a fundamental human right, and access to safe sanitation is essential for human dignity, health, and well-being but unfortunately, many communities in the country still lack access to basic sanitation facilities, putting them at risk of waterborne diseases and other health hazards.

While emphasizing the Ministry commitment to improving sanitation and hygiene practices across the country, the minister said the Federal Ministry of Environment has made several efforts towards the delivery of sanitation and hygiene mandates to the Nigerian citizenry.

All the few drainages in Lagos are blocked with water plastic bottles and nylon which causes heavy floods and the governor of Lagos isn't doing anything about it.

Long overdue. Everywhere is badly riddled with dirts. Another menace is open defecation. The smell in communities populated by the northerners is something else in Lagos.

I concur! The people that asked it be stopped did not think deep at all, nor think into The Future, The State Goverments too should ensure that they provide proper ways and means to dispose of dirt and ensure we recycle properly too,

If governor start demolition of buildings around the drainage, you'll start calling him names. If you are in Lagos, you'll see that lots of drainage has been cleared. Don't tag me APC cuz I'm not a political person. I only talk what I see.

Lies

I was driving through lanre bus stop in Igando last week and it was heavily flooded. Infact, there was no drainage in that area. Everywhere was flooded that I began to ask if Lagos truly has governor ..
Lagos is in a APC right now especially when it rains heavily

Lagos state is now smelly and filled with dirty because of those bola boys carrying big bags of junk and dropping anywhere and everywhere.

Why is Lagos state government not raiding these almajiris and bola boys messing up the state like they raid young men on the streets of Lagos, or are almajiris sacred?

These almajiris and bola boys littering everywhere in their millions in Lagos is one of the reasons Lagos can not be listed as an international city and still dirty. It is evil to bring up kids in begging, they deserve a better chance at life.

A responsible government will either take them to reunite with their families,. arrest those exploiting them to beg or rehabilitate them. Begging is a disease, these little beggars growing up with no education or training to earn a living will join crime to survive, this is not rocket science, lol.

This for me is a very unwelcomed news. It shows that we are still thinking backwards. This is an area that could create thousands of real job's that will employ people and further boost the economy, but our government would rather go back to this backward idea of shutting down businesses and restricting movements in the name of sanitation. The government should create a robust environmental clean up arm, employ people, and pay them through reasonable taxation of businesses. I'm sure the business owners would definitely be happier to pay a token, than to be asked to shut down their businesses. Besides most businesses are already illegally making such payments to louts, all the government has to do is to create an effective channel of payments and monitoring.

Typical stupidity of African leaders again , why do you need a special day to clean 😂😂, our economy needs all the productive time especially on Saturdays but these clueless politicians think earmarking 4 hours on a single Saturday is enough to keep city clean ? Keeping environment clean is a 24 hour activity both by the govt and the people

Sometimes the way Nigerians think amazes me and people are hailing this.

Why do you need a special day to clean up where you restrict economic activities the you say you want to develop.

I’ve lived in the UK for a while and every early morning street sweeps go along every street cleaning up waste. Government sanitation workers carry on their duties daily including sewer management while people go about their business.

Dedicating a day a month for people to clean up is useless, as people don’t have to be told when to clean their houses, it should be a daily thing. People end up playing football on empty streets that day anyways.

If the first attempt at monthly sanitation didn't cause citizens to be be conscious of keeping their environment clean, then this second attempt won't. Sanitation should be made a way of life and not a one in a month event. How about starting with improving the waste collection and disposal methods?

Donald Duke wasn't a military governor in Croas River State but he made sanitation a way of life. Every indigene was conscious why the environment should be kept clean. There was no special day for cleaning the environment. The state was so clean until he left and APC finally took over. The state is now a shadow of its former self.
