aribisala0:You are most definitely the one confusing yourself with your disjointed and uncoordinated comments! The intention of Tinubu was not just to generate a power plant but to distribute to Lagos citizens which wasn't possible as there was an existing law that only authorized FG to provide electricity through the national grid which Tinubu was fully aware of as he was once a former senator! Hence, there was no reason for Tinubu to persuade Obasanjo as that power lied in the legislative arm of government not the executive that Obasanjo belonged to! aribisala0:This must be the most disjointed comment I have ever read! You were either drunk when you typed this or you were on drugs! aribisala0:😄😄 Please what are you actually saying? Well atleast in all your uncoordinated comments, you have admitted that it wasn't the position of Obasanjo to alter the constitution as that authority is vested in the national assembly! Hence Tinubu was at best grandstanding when he brought a generating plant that didn't serve it's purpose until Buhari altered the electricity act in 2023! |

babat89:I think from the tax bill he has discovered that shetima may want to do him like Atiku-Obasanjo and instigate the northern bigwigs against his reforms. The tax bill was a litmus test for Shetima and he failed. It pains me because I like the guy but I love federalism more than northern domination. |

SmartPolician:If your governors no muuumu, and no dey think with blokkos you go know say as governors dem fit increase IGR using increased allocations by this Tinubu government to create infrastructure and platforms, harness their natural resources, by investing these allocations into sustenable sectors of their state economy to boost IGR and employment of their people. Power sector is very lucrative, investment companies will invest where their investment is safe and guaranteed...the backwards people will reap rewards of their backwardness and negativity, the progressive people will enjoy the benefits of progressive, positive lifestyle. States are not joined in the hip, each state is like a small country, under federal structure, allowed to have police, Ports, their own laws, their own power plan and framework...these freedoms will allow states utilise their ingenuity, resources and innovation to prosper their people and state. Human beings developed the world and it's systems...most state governors and executives are lazy, and parasitic in nature, vote in intelligent people of vision, not mundane money huungri people. |

bentenny:No sir, Buhari SIGNED THE AMENDED CONSTITUTION meaning he accented that the constitution should be amended. Now Tinubu has actually signed the bill (not constitution) to allow state do the task. Now the state will now individually sign their own bill on how to go about it. |

Please let us the south West state collaborate and join forces together, to develop a regional electricity grid that will serve all the western state, we can lead while other regions emulate. Western regions has the capacity to do this. Please let the development starts from us. God bless south West, God bless Nigeria. |

If he can sign electricity he can also sign policing. There is no immediate need in our clime but security and regional autonomy |

Irony1:Pick up the Constitution and check carefully. You'll see that electricity has never been in the executive list. It has always been in the concurrent list with numerous caveats and provisos. Buhari's 2022 Act removed many of these restrictions. Tinubu's ammendment just removed all the remaining ones. |

SmartPolician:Stop abusing people to make a point cos you may be the one that is actually misfiring. There are other ways to generate electricity asides from oil and gas which is dangerous to the environment. We have safer and more environment friendly options like 1. Hydropower 2. Solar Power 3. Wind Power 4. Biomass 5. Off-grid Solutions . |

Article summary President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently signed the 2023 Electricity Act into law, de-monopolizing Nigeria’s electricity sector. Meanwhile in March 2023, former president Buhari signed a constitutional amendment. Both actions are different from each other. There is a three-step process at play and the state governments hold the final piece. President Tinubu recently signed the Electricity Act of 2023 into law, marking an important development in Nigeria’s electricity sector. This Act aims to break the monopoly in electricity generation, transmission, and distribution at the national level. The Act grants the power to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity to states, companies, and individuals. To fully grasp the significance of this Act, it is essential to understand the distinction between this action and the constitutional amendment signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in March 2023. Recall that in March 2023, Nairametrics reported that Nigeria’s former President Buhari, signed a constitutional amendment allowing states to license the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity.quote author=otherway post=135916916] Buhari signed the amended bill but Tinubu has now signed into law the actual bill to finally allow states 100% control. Now the last step is for the states to actually pass the state laws governing transmission, Generation and distribution. This is what the governmt should have done since 1960. Gradually, Nigeria is getting it right in terms of stable electricity[/quote] |

Lets focus on the major reforms like state police and resource control. GEJ and Buhari already signed this electricity bill and thats why Geometric power in Abia was able to do that. We cannot be tweaking existing law just to appear to be working. dederocs: |

Treasure17:What exactly do you people want? Same you people that were complaining about power supply. Now, Tinubu is trying to decentralize power generation, transmission, and distribution and you borrowed #200 data to type nonsense. |
| Re: Tinubu Signs Bill Granting States Full Control Over Electricity by WizardOfNG: 5:13pm On Jun 28, 2025 |
kole22k:That is underway now. Fully deregulated power sector means PPP (public and private sector partnership) collaboration can quickly usher in much improved power supply for regions with the customer base to pay tariff rates and make it profitable for potential private sector partners to engage. I believe the SW , cumulatively, has this customer base. The possibility full deregulation has opened is near endless as long as Private investors can have good assurances of ROI (returns on investments) for providing power solutions. Embedded power generation solutions, for example, can be used to cover rural areas. Even as rural areas tend to be poor, because of smaller population and far less commercial activities, their power solution can be funded by profitable nearby urban areas and cities that will pay the agreed tariff rate over a set period allowing private sector partners to regain capital invested and good ROI. Any region that is progressive should have good to very good power supply in the next 15 years because of Tinubu's drive and focus. Credit to Buhari also for birthing the process that has now led to this current State of affairs

Eleph:Initially he was moving madd prioritizing nonsense over substance. Like if he can decentralize police too jus like electricity couple with d elimination of dollar arbitrage and subsidy removal then he has scored 40/100. Now to move to nxt level he needs to overhaul d banking sector...all these little charges that amount to their superficial profit in d mist of inflation and wat not shd be shrinked and lastly before he leaves set d country on d part of regional autonomy.let all mallam to his or her kettle. Then he can hv a score card of 65/100. Note: No politician can score 90% in Nigeria they are all thieves disguising as saints |

SmartyPants:You are correct but I think executive is a typo you probably meant exclusive. Tinubu has personal experience of how good intentions can be frustrated by poor understanding of the law Hopefully he learnt something from his Enron adventure in Lagos State Still is even clearer now that he was indeed visionary at the time I think it is important to give him credit for that unfortunately the polity is so toxic that if you give anyone credit you become their supporter or worshipper. I am neither because I am a Lagos state indigene and there is so much that one can resent about Tinubu if you look for it However I love Nigeria more and I want him to succeed. In 2027 I hope and pray there is a better alternative to him but if not and he wins I will support him not as candidate but as president |
| Re: Tinubu Signs Bill Granting States Full Control Over Electricity by SmartyPants(m): 5:15pm On Jun 28, 2025 |
Irony1:Like I just explained, this was done in stages. The power sector is divided into three sub-sectors: Generation, Transmission, and Distribution. In the first stage, which was Buhari's version of the law, Transmission and distribution was ceded to the States. In Tinubu's amendment, the States can now also manage generation if they want. |
| Re: Tinubu Signs Bill Granting States Full Control Over Electricity by teepain: 5:17pm On Jun 28, 2025 |
DMerciful:This doesn't qualify to be described as abdication of responsibility because power generation and distribution had been privatized prior to this. What the current action of the FG does is to allow various state governments more latitude in regulating and administering energy in their various domains. |

| Re: Tinubu Signs Bill Granting States Full Control Over Electricity by SmartPolician: 5:35pm On Jun 28, 2025 |
Toks2008:I am glad you understand the subject. I assure you that the bill Tinubu signed didn't stop state governors from giving their people power through the sources you itemized. The truth is, investing in power is capital intensive. If Tinubu genuinely wants these governors to start supplying power to their power, he would set up counterpart funding schemes for that purpose. Unfortunately, the man is more interested in a coastal road shredded in fraud than investing in power. So, ping this moniker the day a governor starts generating, transmitting and distributing power to its people using any of the sources you mentioned above. Once again, I am glad to meet someone who understands the subject, not people who jubilate at every news without giving it a second thought. |

discusant:Are they providing electricity for free? Any serious state governor/government would create an enabling business environment for investors to provide the services and benefits directly from the taxes and VAT. It is going to be a win win situation for everyone. |

Am not a fan of politicians but I like progressive policies, stop dropping names, you are beginning to sound like a sycophant, let's focus on the topic. Buhari was a disaster. |
